The Family (Mama, Eunice, and Ed) celebrate Mama's birthday. It's a nice evening until "perfect" Ellen makes a surprise visit. Betty White's first appearance as Ellen. Unedited as it originally aired on 11/25/75.
It’s amazing how believable Vicki Lawrence is as Mama at such a young age.
Omgosh right...I watched this as a kid and my kids watch with me my son bought the whole collection on DVD lol now I'm getting the grandkids watching it
She did the mannerisms & speech of an older woman very accurately.
I was probably 4 when I watched this, never knew til now how young she really was lol..
@@marciphillips8682 I was a 70s kid too. I'm so glad I never had children. Family life never appealed to me, probably because of these shows 😂
Its amazing how much her n Carol actually look alike
There is something about these comedy sketches with Eunice and Mamma that touches on a sadness at the same time . How many of us are there that have known the deep despair and anger from trying to please someone that never will be pleased no matter how hard you may try .
Regarding this particular sketch: This was very sad and disturbing. Brilliantly written, acted, and directed…and I don’t like watching it. It’s really psychodrama for the writers. The talented Betty White’s character is downright hateful, as is Mama. I much preferred the earlier sketches of “The Family,” such as the three of them playing Sorry, or when Alan Alda, Tommy Smothers, and Roddy McDowell played Eunice’s brothers. Those sketches were funny. But then “The Family” took a dark turn that I detested. Thank goodness they lightened it up again when it morphed into Mama’s Family.
Yup
Amen!
@@rhsharp You're right. My estranged sister is a sociopath, clinically diagnosed.
@@rhsharp I agree. It's very reminiscent of the ugly arguments in "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte." Every word is dripping with resentment and cruelty. Betty White's Ellen character is horrid and bitchy, and Mama is unbelievably insensitive. I kept expecting Eunice to shove the cake in either woman's face.
Betty White and Carol Burnett are just chewing through the scenery here. More acting talent in this episode than ten Oscar winning movies together!
And Vicki Lawrence?
@@zyxzyx3030 that's right
That's right . Miss these types of shows
@@zyxzyx3030 if you look close Vicky Lawrence has a ghostly shadow behind her😱 I had heard that set was haunted
So true
I'm 68 years old and can finally laugh at this without being traumatized by reliving my own dysfunctional family.
I remember watching this as a kid. She would start thev show with questions from the audience. I remember a guy stood up and said, " Can you stop doing Moma's Family? they remind me too much of mt family and I just want to enjoy the show." I never forgot that all those years.
Yes but at 64 I can also finally cry at it. Lol
When I watched it as a child I liked the comedy as an adult imo Mom was full of vitriol towards Eunice.Loved Ellen who could care less about her . Ed was unlearned . I too have family members like this if I never see them again it will be too soon.
What's Dysfunctional LOL😂
Dysfunctional family? Is there any other kind? 🤷
I have over 100 channels and here I am watching KZhead videos of The Carol Burnett Show because there’s nothing on that even comes close to this nowadays. Carol is pure comic genius! Thank you for posting.

I know that's right! I grew up watching these episodes and 45 years later I'm still watching them! Some one commented that they felt rather sad for Eunice. I didn't feel sad for Eunice until after her Mom died she thought Ed wanted to get back with her and because of her low self esteem and genuine help for others; she did not even get to go with her brother Phillip to New York and she really wanted to go to see new places and enjoy life's true blessings.
lol, Poor Eunice. She tries so hard to make everyone happy and at every turn they use the kind things she does to put her down. The fact that her gift was inviting Ellen over despite her dislike for her completely flew over Mama's head.
It does seem like Mama likes Ellen more than Eunice. She doesn't put down Ellen about small matters.
Mama likes all the other kids better because they're 'successful' (i.e. got some money, moved elsewhere) in her eyes. Mama sees in Eunice everything she doesn't like about herself and how her life turned out so Eunice gets the brunt of it. They both didn't get the life they really wanted and settled for men that impregnated them. They're 'stuck' in that town and miserable.
@BrunetteOnTheCouch wow the way you put it makes sense.
😢
I’m so grateful you allow us to have all these laughs without a price tag Thank you.
I love how Eunice tries to stay up and happy despite being constantly put down by everyone.
She tried so hard to make it a nice birthday for mama.
in-law drama is cutting. Eunice is the real villain.
Felt bad for her a few times ..despite the laughs..I felt sorry for her sometimes
The eternal optimist. Nothing wrong with that. The “sunny” side of the street
@@kellychuba Ellen was forever dealing with Eunice issues which she had little to do with it. Eunice just had envy that she spread to everyone else lol

I had an aunt like Eunice I dreaded playing board games with her
You know the old saying: "You can pick your friends, but you can never pick, your family"!!! This show (at least for me), always comes to mind 😁!!!

Carol burnett here is oscar winning performance in my eyes. Her anger is so justifiable and delivered on cue...amazing acting !
@@goldenblue2208 Wow thanks for pointing that out. Ellen.
@@dougmacqueen1679 😂😂😂😂😂
I love watching her acting when she has no lines. The way she looks at people as if she is actually feeling what is going on. Truly something an actor is born with, not taught.
@Dbo83 you
It would be an Emmy as this was TV...but yes, all of them are brilliant as is the writing...something that does not exist on TV anymore...
Rest in Peace Betty White, who passed away at some point last night. She was a true icon. Her SNL performance was legendary.
That show was hilarious BETTY WHITE 🤣miss her already 😌🌺🦋
she's still alive. the democrats are doing this. They are trying to distract from Trump's come back. Evil people.
I tried to watch her SNL show today but it was just awful. She was the only one who was funny and I swear I could see her looking at the others with a look of "How the hell are these morons on TV?" more than once.
Her SNL was not legendary. Sad if her whole career is whiddled down to that.
@@Dogcatlover2432 Thanks. She had a wide range and a long reign. She’s a rare comedian that bridged so many generations. I look at Tony Bennet in the same way. I’m so glad another generation recognized his charm and let him sing on. My sister, a flight attendant, did an impression of Joan Rivers, while wearing River’s coat. Joan didn’t see it, fortunately.
I think the main reason Mama's familly was so well liked, is that so many can relate to it.

April 26, 2023, Happy 90th Birthday Carol Burnett!! ♥️♥️
Thank goodness Carol and Vicki are still with us.
It's amazing how much dialogue they had to recall for these extensive monologues!! They were all truly quality stage actors!🤗
The live shows had a lot of cuts in them and re-does.... They showed some of the final show uncut and it had many "stops and re-starts"
Absolutely incredible!
Exactly. Betty White was also a stage actress and was trained to memorize dialogue.
They use cue cards. They also do practice runs.
The beautiful Lady Betty White here as Ellenand such a pleasure. Just went to the Father Christmas Eve. 👏

Agree. Betty definitely played the pretentious superficial bitch part really well though. Better than any role I've ever seen her do. " And you thought that was fried chicken we ate that night, Eunice!"
And a bigger mouth especially when she plays board games.
Gosh, that was downright painful. Very hard to watch. Reminded me of something that would have been written by Tennessee Williams. I don’t know how they delivered every line, live, so perfectly. Amazing talent all around. Incredible, and that’s what made it so painful for a viewer who came from the same kind of family.

Hello 👋🏻 nice to meet you Renee, hope you’re safe and well?
I was bullied in elementary school too.
Actually I was as well, and sorta adopted the "Eunice type personality" as a defense. I could use many insults I heard from Mama's Family and other similar shows... and most kids had no idea what I was talking about... I got in trouble for calling a girl a "tramp" because I heard Mama call Naomi that lol
Those kids who bullied yall probably had a life like Eunice.
@@samueltaylor9254 I thought at the time that their lives were close to perfect but I talked to a couple of them later and you're right. I was wrong. One was being sexually abused by her stepfather and another was verbally abusive to quite a few people. A teacher had heard about her reputation and disliked her for it. I made it through the storm. I know there is a God. Dear God I'm here!
Poor Eunice. She is so justified in telling those two women off. They treat her terribly

Carol Burnett was amazing as Eunice. Her facial expressions could be hilarious, poignant, and pitifully sad. What an actress! ❤

So true. Carol is not only a brilliant comedienne but a great comic actress. Harvey Korman, of course, and Vickie Lawrence too - very good character acting. Many of the great comics were not necessarily good comic actors. Jackie Gleason was another great comic actor.
