Fin Whale Encounter *THEY RESPOND TO ‘DORA’ SONGS!!*
Fin Whales invaded the southern California coastline this year! On this particular day, we encountered a nice pod of common dolphins then got called into a pair of fin whales (the second largest whale second to the blue whale) and they stuck with our boat for an hour mugging us (our term of whales interacting really close with the boat)!
The ladies on the trip were so appreciative for the mammals and I truly believe the whales can feel that and started to get closer and closer to the boat. They were so funny singing calls like Dora from Finding Nemo to the whales. Every time they did, the whales would surface and turn towards us! I truly had a great time hosting this trio of friends from Kentucky!
We also got a close look at the Velella (AKA: By-the-wind-Sailor) jellyfish that comes to our coastline around this time of year. This means the sunfish (mola mola) are also around in abundance! I’ll make another video on those next time so stay tuned!
