  • Okay, I have researched this! Apparently this is a product that's made from pomelo. The 'meat' of the fruit is scooped out, boiled with honey, lemon, licorice, and some other ingredients, and then put back in the pomelo rind. So it is a sort of candy! Now we need to go to Taiwan and try it!

  • It's medicinal candy made from pomelo called "Youzisen" dry/herbal pomelo. It's made by hollowing out a pomelo. Then the pith and pulp gets blended until it's mush and Chinese medicinal herbs, malt and honey are added. Then the seasoned paste gets poured back into the hollowed pomelo rind and dehydrated until it's firm. Its taste is described as sweet and savoury, with a citrusy dried fruit and medicinal herb flavour, leaving a hint of bitterness in the finish. Two brands you can look for that are commercially sold are Ma Tzuann Youzisen Herbal Pomelo and Madou Farmers Association Dry Pomelo.

  • 這是白柚果 I'm from Taiwan, I've that eaten before, it's Quite delicious but a bit sour and spicy, This is not a natural fruit. This is white pomelo fruit and pomelo ginseng. The outer skin is pomelo, and the inside is golden dates, kumquats, honey, malt, fragrant balls, licorice, sugar, salt, and mint. It has been roasted and can be used as a Plant taiwanese medicine and can also be used as snacks.

  • So I am Taiwanese, after a quick research it’s now call “Yuzu Sonn”. It’s traditional herbal candy for the purpose to release your throat pain from dry or sign too much(which for me, it do not really fulfil its purpose, just nice taste, minty and sweet😅). But, all my life I have only see the final product, the small chunks in the end of the video. So I am more surprised then you to spot that its not fruit but dry mix juice…! 😅 because most the time in Taiwan we call it八仙果 “Eight immortals fruit”…. a fake fruit name giving by the market... So I just realize what I ate was not “Dry Eight Immortal Fruit”, it’s literally as its name, 8 different fruits mixed…😂 can’t believe I didn’t realise it all these years until now! Mind blowing🤯 In research, I also learned why I feel it taste differently in my childhood. It was made with god hand fruit, but now they put inside the pomelo due to the cost (the old formula did help my throat in my memory) 🤷🏻‍♀️. Anyway, for whom so brave gonna try, make sure the one you buy don’t have bad chemicals, there were news about cancer many years ago, not sure now.

  • For those who are wondering how they scooped the meat out of the pomelos: The yuzisen in the video was upside down, so you couldn't see the incision. People cut the fruit from its top like a lid. After they filled the mixture into the rind, they cover it and tie it with a string. Every yuzisen has to be baked and exposed to the sun many times, thus making them takes half a year.

    • It's not similar to yubeshi in Japan by the way. Japanese yubeshi is more like a steamed rice cake in a pomelo rind and tastes sweet. Also, yubeshi is a little bit smaller than yuzisen.

  • 포멜로 과일 속 파내고 안에 설탕및 허브 과일등 끓인거 채워 넣고 굳힌거예요. 저건 포멜로 향인가봄.:) 굳이 이렇게 하지 않고도 실온에서 굳혀 만든 똑같은 갈색 캔디?카라멜?도 있어요. 식후에 소화에 도움 되라고 많이 먹더라구요.

  • It’s called Eight immortals’ fruit or Baxian fruit 八仙果 which is a traditional Chinese medicinal candy, mainly used for relieving throat discomfort and cough suppression. It is made by stuffing Chinese medicinal herbs such as dried tangerine peel, Pinellia, Poria, and licorice into the flesh of Buddha's hand citron or pomelo, and then drying it. This candy has a flavor of Chinese medicine and mint, and is helpful for sore throat and cough caused by common cold, but its effectiveness for cough caused by asthma is not clear.

  • It is called “Ba Xian guo” literal translation is Eight Immortal Fruit (candied fruit). The Eight Immortals are 8 kinds of people: male, female, elder, youth, poor, contemptible, wealthy, and noble. The inside of the fruit was scooped out then cooked with 8 different herbs. But unless you find a reputable maker of this candy, most use heavy preservative and artificial sweetener. Eating too much of those will send you straight to dialysis.

  • I lived in Taiwan for 11 years.. here two tips for you: 1) "it looks like a fruit" it may not mean that's a plain fruit that you never heard of, mostly likely it's not a fruit.. 2) "it looks like chocolate" most DEFINITELY it's not chocolate, but some kind of smashed and treated beans.   • Eight Immortals Fruit known in China as Ba Xian Guo is traditional china medical for throat and cough cool down. It is type of dried fruit snack traditionally made with several herbs and dried fruit like mandarin peel, liquorices, Pinellas ternate, and is packet in Chayote or grapefruit as standard vessel. It is often cut into little cubes as a snack with strong mint sweet taste.

  • This snack is common in South East Asia, in Malaysia, we call this kind of snacks Asam-asam, meaning sour. 30-40 variants, pickled fruits or dried. Cheap and delicious, some soothes your throat. There's no brand to it, because it's extremely common that they just open a jar and pack one for you in a paper bag.

    • Oh well……as a Taiwanese, I have to say, the taste has nothing to do with chocolate😂 it’s a combination of mint, a little bit of fruit sour and much sweeter,plus a little bit of bitter. It’s like a fruit with some mint taste. but for the texture, it’s like a solid cream, which is harder. I know I explain it a bit weird but I tried my best.
