  • What makes this song so great is the vulnerability in the lyrics. Its real. He's insecure and desperately seeking to find love and acceptance in the world. He's doing what he's gotta do even though he knows it's wrong. He's hustling, talking that pimp shit and preaching at the same time. He's up against it but somehow still cool as fuck. You feel his pain and frustration yet you still wanna be him. To me this song captures the black experience so perfectly.

How long can a good thing last? ... Got a woman I love desperately Wanna give her somethin' better than me Been told I can't be nuthin' else Just a hustler in spite of myself I know I can break it This life just don't make it ..." You can't find this depth in Jay-Z, Nas, Biggie or whatever. Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield got it. The young guys don't listen to it all.
