  • "Craziest mistakes at the Olympics", yet no mention of the 3000m Steeplechase final in 1932? For those unaware, the person in charge of the lap counter was distracted by the long jump in the decathlon and forgot to change the sign, meaning the athletes had to run an extra lap.

  • Dude from Luxembourg might have been the oldest ever medalist but that's not shocking nor is the band not knowing the anthem for that country. What was the most shocking was in Sydney 2000 when the vault was set too low in the ladies event leading to some of the best gymnasts crashing out. That was the biggest Olympic fail of all time.

The jockeys choose to ride, the horse don't choose to run and jump on ridiculously designed courses that are made to practically as difficult as possible for them to finish, without some glory hound idiot sitting on there backs.

  • The Philippine basketball team was the biggest victim of the inaugural Olympic basketball tournament in 1936. The squad lost only once but had to settle for fifth place because of the quirk in the rules. They placed behind Mexico, which they beat in Round 2 and Poland, which lost in Round 1. Both Mexico and Poland needed wins in the consolation round to keep their medal hopes alive but the Filipinos never had a chance after losing to the USA in the quarterfinals as organizers decided to make it a knockout round from Round 3 onwards. The organizers should have just made it a double elimination round to be fair to every team.

  • Basketball was played outdoors in Europe for a long time, not just at the 1936 Olympics. The first European Championship to be played indoors were in 1961, in Belgrade.

    @savastevanovic@savastevanovic5 жыл бұрын
    • I don't think the fact that it was outdoors was the issue. it was the fact that it was on a tennis court made of clay and it was bad conditions for a basketball game. Id assume the outdoor courts at the European championships were a better surface to dribble on.

      @ah7027@ah70275 жыл бұрын
    • In some places it was really played on clay, probably different than the one used for tennis but still clay. In Yugoslavia after the Second World War, most teams had clay courts. Red Star won the first ten championships, and we (Partizan fans) joke that they won Roland Garros like Nadal.

  • How about the 2 US 100 meter sprinters at the 1972 Munich games. Their race was at 14 :00, but the US track coach didn't understand military time, so he thought it was for 4 o'clock, not 2 pm which is 14:00. European countries use the 24 hour military time clock. Valeri Borzov then won the 100 meter final, and won the 200 as well. Back then the 200 meters wasn't that important, which you could see by the slow times back then.
