Gazza Or Wazza? & Euro 96/2024 Combined XI | EP 113

2024 ж. 30 Сәу.
98 759 Рет қаралды

Would you rather have Paul Gascoigne or Wayne Rooney in your side? What was it like when you were on the receiving end of Duncan Ferguson’s wrath? Which question led Micah to plead the fifth to avoid incriminating himself?
Gary, Alan and Micah also debate which players from England’s Euro ’96 team would get in the current England side.

It would be a great visual while you are talking... The question about the best goal scored against you would be a good example to show. I LOVE THE POD!

    @BTLPods@BTLPods24 күн бұрын
    • Well said, Gazza had bags of talent but so did Michael Johnson at City, John Bostock and Ravel Morrison, takes a lot more than talent to consistently achieve at an elite level, that’s why Rooney is a dimension above.

    • That was some goal, wasn't it😲!? I honestly think Dennis Bergkamp had the best first touch I've ever seen in the game. Remember his goal against Argentina at the '98 World Cup? How audacious were those 3 touches😮!? I'm a Man Utd supporter but back in the 90s, I think all around the standard was great in EPL. All the teams had exceptional players you'd enjoy watching even when they played for your opponents. Just to name a few, Shearer and Les Ferdinand, Anelka and Bergkamp, Zola with Sutton or Vialli, Viduka, Kewell, Hasselbaink, Darren Huckeby, Duncan Ferguson, Matt Le Tessier, Ginola, Kevin Phillips, Michael Owen, Stan Collymore, Robbie Fowler, Dion Dublin etc. I'm sorry for rambling on, but there was a marvelous balance even though teams like Man Utd and Arsenal generally dominated

  • Like Micah said there's statistically a 60% chance of winning a shootout if you go first. The longer the shootout goes on the more it can be in your favour. Man Utd lost under Ole in the Europa League final in a very long shootout. Fernandez won the toss but elected to go second. You can see the moment the referee has to double check he requested to go second. Bruno's decision could have been the difference between winning that trophy and Solskjear staying in his job.

  • The reason for the VAR on screen not being shown in the premier league is because not all stadiums have screens. Which is in total contrast to the FA using VAR in grounds that have the facilities, but not in stadiums that obviously don’t have the equipment. At leats the Prems screen rule is consistent but both rules are BS.

    @samprizeman4509@samprizeman450924 күн бұрын
  • Why don't they switch the emphasis on VAR, so the officials know the pitch ask for VAR if they are unsure about something, rather than VAR jumping in all the time? They take 3mins to check an offside that nobody in the ground was questioning Instead, just leave it to the ref to ask for a different angle if he's not sure

  • 13:45 nope. Letting the crowd see the VAR was tried during one of the women's world cups. The (Ghanian? Nigerian?) ladies team watched the replay and nearly rioted when the decision went against them. Harry Kewell had a similar meltdown at a world cup when he watched the var. So, in keeping the fans informed, the ref and authorities risk riling up the prlayers, ruining the game the fans paid money to watch. PS: the UK doesn't have a) a constitution b) a bill of rights therefore c) a 5th amendment right not to give evidence against yourself.

    @hughtube5154@hughtube515424 күн бұрын
    • I think if they're going to take something from Rugby and Cricket it should be miked refs. Died down almost overnight in both sports when they started this and fans can hear the logic that referees are in that moment. People will still make mistakes but people are much more forgiving when they understand why someone saw something a specific way.

      @glenporritt@glenporritt22 күн бұрын
    • @@glenporritt I admire your optimism, but fear even miked-up refs would fail in football. Cricketeers, rugby players, tennis players on average have more, how shall I say this, intelligence? Honour? Sportsmanship? Magnanimity? than footballers. Footballers are taught to cheat - stick your arm up to claim the corner or throw in, even though you know it touched you last; move your leg onto their body so you can fall down in the box and claim a penalty. The two VAR examples I cited in the OP both vindicated the ref, but the women, and Harry Kewell, STILL had a hissy fit, even though they saw a replay of them committing a foul. Plus, football's too tribal, they stick together even if they're in the wrong. Man U fans turning on Mason Greenwood is so rare; you have to wonder if Mason was their star player would they have supported him despite the evidence, the way Liverpool fans got behind Suarez vs Evra, or Chelsea fans behind John Terry (vs Anton Ferdinand / Wayne Bridge). Even the presenters are not immune - Wayne Rooney stamps on Ricardo Carvalho's testicles, gets sent off, dooming England to another quarter final exit, yet the anger and blame for Gary and Alan is all on Cristiano Ronaldo for winking to his teammate. So, yeah, I don't expect anything from footballers, except to look out for themselves.

He had a good tournament and then made all the wrong choices. Rooney is no model citizen but could tackle, fight for the ball and always turned up ready to play. I don't think Gazza gets in Rooney's Utd team ahead of Keane, Scholes, Rooney or anywhere else.
