I was just going through some of my old VHS tapes, and decided to publish some interesting old news stories. This one was taken when Ian Botham played for Queensland in 1988, and while the WACA ground was undergoing an upgrade. A recording made when I was a boy of Botham bowling against WA opening batsmen. It also shows when the next keeper for Australia, Peter Anderson, suffers a fractured hand as a result of standing over the stumps to Ian Botham. Priceless, rare footage.
First time I have seen this . I was instructed to stand up to Beefy , due to Tom batting out of the crease. Thumb broken in 3 places . Was always confident over the stumps, but Perth was a challenge. That’s Life !
Dear Peter Anderson...was Botham bowling at 140 kmph + or lower pace? Thanks
@@sivaramannagarajan7521 no , I think about 130/ 135.
That took a lot of courage to stand up over the stumps for Botham! Well done Mr. Anderson!
Botham was pretty sharp so you’re a brave guy!
Thank you Peter for providing some comments on this. Very fascinating to listen and read your views.
Geez a bit of bounce and copping one right off the edge into your nose wouldn't be fun keeping up to the stumps there. Great old footage.
Trouble was Botham never recovered from the back injury he sustained on the 86/87 tour to Australia. I'm sure not being able to bowl at his full pace frustrated him. This is an interesting video.
The injury on the 1986/87 tour was his side strain. His back had been troubling him since 1980 and gave way in 1988.
Botham by late 80's was a trundler
Greatest ever all rounder.... SIR IAN BOTHAM
apart from Sobers, Imran, Kapil, Proctor, Keith Miller your right.
@@garethjones7677 talent wise and match winning capability wise, with both bat and ball, he was the best of all. Sir Gary was decent left arm bowler but not a match winner with ball, same with Kallis...Imran peaked as a batter late but will not take the game away from you, but perhaps the best of all bowlers aforementioned. Kapil was a talented bat but his best knocks came in few and far in between. Beefy between 1978 to 1982 was a beast....he scored big runs at rapid pace and bowled many match winning spells, be it in Eng, Wi or even in India. Hence to me the greatest impact an all rounder , if ever, it was Sir Ian Botham...pity he faded after 30 due to injuries
I would also vote Ian Botham as the greatest all rounder I ever saw. But he had plenty of examples of great all rounder company in his day.
Wow, what a find - thanks so much for uploading! Btw, who's the horrible commentator with Rod Marsh at 21:20 ?
That’s Mick Malone #WSC loss 1977 #Wayne Daniel 6 runs 2nd last ball
I can kind of see the logic in the keeper standing up. They wanted to use the inconsistent bounce and get Both firing at the stumps with the batter In the crease for the lbw or bowled dismissals.
English keepers used to stand up to Botham. But with that extra bounce and the cracks in the wicket, Anderson was put in a perilous position. And that broken thumb stuffed Anderson's international career as he was selected as the Australian keeper taking over from Dyer.
Wow! Who are the commentators, they sure were hinting a lot 😎
One of them is Rod Marsh.
Poor Mark Mc Phee died in a head on collision with a truck. RIP
His sometime Shield opening batsman Shane Clements took his own life. RIP
A good Scarborough SHS boy. So talented.
I'm an old keeper. I'm not sure they fully understand how much standing up to the stumps affects the batsman. They will always be thinking about their back foot. Standing up is playing the percentages. It's not allowing a batsman to relax. Bowl a bouncer. Give away 4 byes. Who cares? If that's what it takes to get the batsman 2nd guessing
Great to see this uploaded, and a very interesting watch. Thanks Peter Anderson for your comments, and I can't help but think this hastened your exit from 1st class cricket. A bit like Laurie Spina being replaced at 1/2 time in a Qld origin trial game, replaced by Alan Langer, and missed out on Origin league forever. Them's the breaks, literally.
@@nealenewton4193 Laurie Spina was never replaced at halftime by Langer. Spina was a Sydney first grader. He played for the Queensland based, NSW residents side wearing blue jerseys against a QLD residents side in 1987. He was the NSW residents halfback and Langer was the Qld residents halfback. Spina outplayed Langer but Langer controversially got the Qld origin halfback spot for the 87 series.
Long live the king of England cricket, Sir Ian Botham!
Always amazes me how Botham ended up with so many test wickets as he often bowled a load of crap. Wicket keeper thinks he’s Jack Russell!
Wicket keeper - Peter Anderson, possibly the best player to never play a test. Due to a broken thumb sustained in this match. This injury gave Healy his chance. Anderson was pure class
@@JB-ge9tw Healy was a third-rate keeper and a third rate batsman. How he lasted as long as he did in the Australian side beats me.
Peter Anderson was friggin good keeper mate. Stop talking shit. He is his own man as a keeper. Here he was standing up on instructions. I though Rodney made a complete meal of this and went on a bit too long about it. When you see what happened to Mark Boucher then you will realize Peter was pretty gutsy to stand up on that track.
Hez a poor man's sobers
