No Brad….the ref does not run off to look at a monitor in union…..they have video ref. Soccer is where ref goes off to sideline to look at monitor.

What a joke this great game has become. Tell me 1 other sport in the world has multiple rule changes every year. Soccer or football, has been around for ever n has about 5 rules lol. NRL have lost the plot.

Modeen football (soccer) has been around since the mid 1800s. I'm sure they've had many rule changes since them. But yes, it's strange that league has so many problems every week.
I’ll fix the bunker. Only allow it on a captains challenge - that’s it. Refs just make decisions and put it back on the players to challenge the shockers. Then add to the obstruction rule “deliberate obstruction” and “directly impacted the play”.
Bloody hell; remember the days when the Ref called it "as he saw it".............................much better than the off field calls imo.
the fans hated it and the players even more because refs got critical calls wrong sometimes especially in finals games that cost teams their season.

Stupid is stupid does. Only the dummies that didn't watch the game agree with this. Tago clearly scored. Tupouniua didn't ground the ball. Camera from the side shows his right hand not on the ball and then the camera angle from behind shows his left hand not on the ball either.
One thing I hate about the bunker, most of the time they take for ever to make the decision...thus slowing the game down. NRL is a fast paced game and it should stay that way.

I think they should talk about it. A transparent anything is a good thing. They are allowed to say we made a mistake and we are doing better. NRL is one of the least transparent sports. You see many bad calls almost every single game. Pretending they don't happen is silly.
This year has barely started and the bunker has disallowed more tries than we would usually see in an entire year. 😅 Edit: we're also getting the good ol video ref hand sign, followed by a no try hand sign. Yet they'll point straight to the ground only for bunker to overturn 2min later. Why have touchies at this point 😅
What about Togo's grounding. He got the ball down clearly but the bunker said he didn't.
Not a Roosters but that's a 110% Roosters Try. How Could Edwards miss the Ref but bump into Warea? Both were point blank in front of where he was running. He wouldn't make a difference in reaching the try scorer anyway.
He only had eyes for JWH that’s why. They show a slomo for clarification. He knew exactly what he was doing.
That’s 100000% correct. He played JWH not the other way. 2nd he was way too far from the play and would’ve made no difference.
The problem is they never call them unless its a try. Its either a penalty or its not. And all so if they milk it in anyway no penalty ever given.

When Greg McCallum was referring and adjudicating the game against the Panthers v Roosters, he saw Dillon Edward’s clearly playing the player in JWH that would have been a try. Secondly the Dillon Edward’s was 15 meters away from the play. So if the player wants to play the decoy runner it should not be obstruction. Black & White rule is when it’s clear obstruction.
Clubs also need teach their players, you know the defenders will take a dive, move out of the way don't give them an excuse
DRS in cricket is used only when the decision is challenged only by the opposing team. A team gets 3 challenges. Thats it. If you're wrong you lose it. If you're right, you dont loose a challenge. Umpires have the ability to review themselves, but rarely use it. So captain's challenge should stay, but includes tries. Ref makes a decision, sticks to it, ( no bunker review), captain then has to decide if to make the challenge.

There should be NO advantage to any one, it should be about accurate calls. TO FIX IT......for every penalty given in the red zone against the defending team give the attaking team ONE point/ This would eliminate it entirely.

By the letter of the law, Liam Martin makes sure he runs through the line on the inside of Keary’s shoulder. The line is shifting so fast that the player on the inside of Keary gets nicked. But as the rule goes, that is perfectly allowed because Martin goes towards Keary’s inside shoulder.
I agree the obstruction rule is a joke but I think everyone has missed a big point in this case. What is Jared doing being 11 mtrs in front of ball? If he stops just passed the line of defence all is good. Jared put himself in a position he shouldn’t have. Did Edward’s milk it? He probably did but if Jared not 11 mtrs in front of the play he can’t!

I thought it was an obstruction every day of the week. JWH stopped Edwards getting to the play. Edwards may have milked a tiny bit, but his eyes were on the ball and not JWH.
Seriously before you say something look at the rule. The rule does not mention anything about players who are behind the defensive line. It is players in the defensive line that the obstruction rule is there for. Once he clears the defensive line he has not done anything wrong and if a player behind the defensive line instigates contact it is irrelevant to a try being scored. The rule was adhered to and the team who did nothing wrong was penalised. It is like if a cop pulls you over in a sixty zone and you were doing 59 and he gives you a ticket. You have not committed an illegal act so you should not be penalised.

Before the bunker there were bad decisions, with the bunker there are bad decisions, they are never going to get it 100% right, the instant replay changed everything, everybody now sees the mistakes, all they can do is try to keep them to a minimum, and the fans have to accept this, but that will never happen.
Bunker just wanted to make an easy decision. Their thought process was penalising JWH is the easiest penalty in NRL coz nobody will question it. Then they make that clanger
why not have a few ex players assist with the bunker, they know the game best. For people who say they can he bias just dont allow the ex players to review games that have any team they played for.
I hope theres a law that makes it illegal for the bunker to bet on games. Change the captains challenge to 3-5. How many times do silly calls from the refs decide games. How many peoples multis and work betting comps get stuffed up by stupid calls that come from thin air. It would also eliminate conspiracy theories about match fixing.

He didn't have to be the flash or bolt buddy. He just needed to cover 30m in 7 seconds. Most 10 year old kids can run that time. People are looking at it from the time he was on the ground. If JWH wasn't there, then 100% Dylan Edwards covers that distance in that time. Would he have stopped the try? Now thats another question that doesn't need to be answered, simply because he was obstructed.
They bring in all these rule changes to make the game faster, and all it does is slow it down.

Change the word dubious to deliberate . After 25 years of video refs they should have just about perfected their accuracy and rulings and minimised it’s impact on the game. And if you add in the random 6 again penalties that only ever come in the 20 metres to the tryline (that are a disgrace to the game) it is the perfect storm of control. So here we are just baffled,talking about the bunker not just game in game out but try in try out. It is plain and simple game and scores manipulation for gambling agencies sponsors and give the illusion the salary cap is working
One man trying to watch 26 players in motion is not easy. Admitting you made a mistake is a good thing. The game is very fast so not everything will get seen. Well discussed guys and girls.

Nfl reefing makes a real joke of nrl not only the bunker but the number of bad calls in games must be a nrl directive obstruction is not the only debatable call Some teams suffer immensely from poor umpiring decisions where the games are so tight too many games are decided by the ref's I just expect both teams to be treated equally but unfortunately that isn't the case . The umpiring HAS to be an NRL directive as the poor umpiring decisions continue where as in Nfl the umpires who make poor decisions are penalised and not allowed to umpire at that level for sometime not in Australia though . How is it a supposed top level sport has so many contrasting calls weekly , 8:52

These people are supposed to be great analysts of the sport and they are having a debate which is illogical. It has nothing to do with discretion or black and white. The rule is the rule. It is stated that a lead runner can not stop in the defensive line and hinder a defenders opportunity, understand that word, opportunity, to make a tackle. Whether the player is near the try scorer or near the far touch line is irrelevant. In the game on Thursday Hargreaves did exactly what the rule says, and I hope what every coach is training their players to do. He did not commit a legal act and yet his team was penalised. Edwards instigated the contact and so the try should have stood, but for some reason the idiot in the bunker interpreted something which did not need interpretation, the rule was obeyed and the team who obeyed the rule was penalised by having a legitimate try disallowed. You know what would stop all this. If every person who had backed Manu to score a try in the match got together and sued the NRL for having one of its employees make a decision which could be seen, in a court of law as conspiracy to fix the result of a sporting match. Also, if anything the Roosters should have got a penalty for Edwards knocking JWH over without the ball.

Edwards also had the ref in his way, he was watching the ball ran around the ref and JWH was right there, he wasn't cheating.
He played JWH so it’s not an obstruction and he was 15 meters from the play he was never going to make an impact. Face it Dillon Edward’s played for the penalty and knew the Referee was their. It was intentional play. A obstruction is where a player in that specific area of the field is taken out and removed the chance of a tackle or a run. Dillon Edward’s was no obstruction. I can tell you Greg McCallum a great referee would’ve awarded the try based on those points.
The MULTIPLE rule changes has turned this into a different sport. It is no longer about grit, determination and hard yaka but about fitness and quickness, a totally DIFFERENT sort of game and it has SPOILED the game.

It would be nice if a touchie could actually do his or her job and identify one of the many forward passes. It seems that 100 m is beyond them so we need 2 each side. I stopped watching union about 30 years ago because of the scrum refereeing and I have not been back. NRL is on its way to nothing more than a rule based racket and people will switch off. I completey lost respect after that bunker decision in relation to the Manly try. Once you depart from reality there is no coming back.

There is a full proof way to referee a game and that is to use an automated (AI) referee. AI can learn from players behaviour and not only make the right decisions in real-time but speed up the game too. NRL needs to invest in this sort of technology and remove the human emotional aspect from the game because that is what is hurting it. Jai Adi Da!

The try before half time was not grounded by the Roosters. It goes both ways.
It was grounded clear as day, that’s why they have slow mo replays so it gives the simple a chance to understand what’s going on like yourself. But the fact you still didn’t see the grounding, proves my point.

bunker should not decide whether a try is a try or not. if the referee blows the whistle, it's a try, and they can't change it. also, no female referees or bunker officials in the game please, keep them in the nrlw. they need to enforce consequences for milking penalties, this game is becoming too much like soccer. less stopping the game, just play the advantage. bring back the shoulder charge and stop penalising a player for dumb high tackles. if the player with the ball is running and lowers his body, how can the defending player possibly tackle him without contact with the head?
They need to get rid of the no try decision and judge it on it's merits..how many good trys are not given because it's sent up no try......it's a joke...
