  • Now that I have read some of the comments, I have to congratulate you for making the fire just the right distance. My grandfather taught us kids, 60+ years ago, if the fire is too close, not only will the smoke choke you, the heat building up inside will melt the snow and it will drip into the shelter and that's a bad thing to do. So, CONGRATULATIONS. You really did it right.

  • I like that you are putting pine boughs on your shelter. I see people putting wood or branches all of the time, but the boughs will cut the wind with less work required.

  • Fire too far from hut. Otherwise cool. You can chop down small trees and lean against structure for added protection. Fast and easy.

  • Wow! What a find! That upturned tree 'setup" could easily be turned into a very snug pretty long term camp...heck...I'd even put a floor and a small wood stove in it! Love the shelter you built by the way! Just a great time. Cheers.

  • Steel or titanium tent stove with a chimney would be better which could be set up inside the shelter - The fire is to far away from the shelter.

  • That shelter can be a death trap if the tree and root system crash down on you. If you ever need to build under the root of a fallen tree, you need to support the weight just in case.

  • I admire your spunck Just wondering why your camp fire is so far away. Could you not have built it under the root ball of the tree. After all the root ball is just dirt so it wouldn't catch fire. You would have kept warmer. Other then that you did a great job setting up camp.

  • Started with a good base to your shelter. Piss poor job finishing it. The wind can rip away any heat you may get inside of it because of all the holes in the walls. If you're going to do the job, do it right. Those walls should be 2 or 3 times thicker and the fire should be closer with a reflection of some kind. Maybe you should stick to camping with your RV.

    • Probably just for show. Wouldn’t be very helpful for an overnight situation to have it that far and off to the side of the opening to the shelter. This clearly isn’t an overnight situation and honestly doesn’t look like this person does any overnights.
