Using some easy techniques to safely clean a rusty hydraulic piston. My hoist sat outside near the ocean for 6 months and developed a coat of rust on the surface of the bare piston. I clean it up and have a smooth surface and a working hydraulic cylinder.

  • That is quite the technique you have there. Its like you have greased a pole or two before... "compress and push firmly as your stroke"

  • WD 40 and a Kerosene Mixture with 4/0 Steel Wool, does well also

  • It's not chrome plated or stainless, thus it will rust. Now retract the cylinder fully, to protect it from moisture. I disconnect the ram end so I can retract the rod, then keep it out of the weather. Yes, it's inconvenient but necessary.

  • I think you'd be better off removing the piston and inverting it. Then get some metal polish and use a strip of cloth to buff it.
