I just bought the most expensive electric motorcycle on the internet for $30,000...if I end up breaking it. The Harley-Davidson LiveWire is the most expensive electric bike that can be bought right now. Is it worth the high price tag?

Pretty sure that Zero Motorcycles has been around far longer than Harley's electric motorcycle. Zero Motorcycles are clearly better according to many.
Touchscreen Display will brick the bike in no time flat.
3rd to reaply and i already watched it
$30,000 🙈🙈🙈🙈 NOooooo 😵😵
Mathew 19:26 Its how I get through everyday since losing my leg! AMEN BROTHER!!
When I get my Harley Livewire the first thing I'm going to do is get louder aftermarket exhaust and earplugs.
I’ll help you jet the carbs :)
Just hook up a speaker to a white noise generator.
What's an exhaust gonna do except add weight? What u need is a loud speaker.
What? No K&N??? 😂😂😂
za guite that was a joke. Hilarious ain’t it?
Maybe in 10 years when electric bikes will cost half as much, have twice the range and fully charge in like 15 minutes.
yeah , if you look at the early electric cars like the first rav4 or such , they were expensive and did 60miles range on massive batteries and took the whole night to charge. compre to todays plus model does 226 miles and charges fully in 3 hours, still expensive but more bang for your buck, tesla even more so but not sold everywhere.
@@jonathandalton2921 the first rav 4...dude electric cars and trucks have been around since the 1920's
@@alt7488 electric cars predate petrol, they are from 1832. But before Sony made li-ion batteries in the 90s they were hopelessly impractical.
If you think this is normal pricing for electric bikes, do some reading, it is not. It's harley's idea of normal.
My luggaged-up Zero Black Forest cost 2/3 the price and gets 1/3 more range... They have models that go for 1/3 the price too.
This bike just went on sale at my local Harley dealership for $22,000. Most likely due to the announcement that HD will be splitting off Livewire as it’s own brand starting at $22,000! (A bit of an insult to recent livewire owners who paid full price)
They actually refunded people who bought the day ones if they got in early enoguh
I physically shook my head no when sean took out that knife.
Steve same here lol
I said out loud "Don't "
Omg I said no Don't and shook my head 😂
Big noooooooo don't do it!!!
Just think of the HD OEM replacement cost of that cable, bet it doesn't come cheap to replace
I like the bike and realize this is likely the future of motorcycling but will have to wait for the price to drop A LOT.
That is the problem with electric. If the aim is to get me to save money then they started off on the wrong foot. More "affordable" stuff you can find these days is literally chinese bikes with an electric motor. Not going to spend 15k for that one either.
Giovanni Di Cello I agree but I feel like we can improve this statement by saying that this is more generally an issue with cutting edge tech. The price to pay for early adopters. Electric vehicles have been around for a little while now but I don’t really feel like they’ve yet broken into the mainstream market and reaped the benefits of such. These things will probably be at least a bit cheaper once a larger mass production oriented supply line is established. At least I can hope, this bike looks like riding the future, just not a future that I can currently afford.
Zero Motorcycles?
@@602jesse I would like to schedule a ride on a Zero. Closest Dealer for me is 3hrs away though.
its like the Prius, after 5 or so years the price will be slightly more than a regular combustion engine powered motorcycle. though I'm not sure about that, gas bikes will always be a thing seeing as how the technology for batteries is as good as it'll ever get, and the battery being the biggest factor of price, yeah, they'll be somewhere in the neighbourhood of 25k in 5 to 10 years time.
Ended up riding one of these at a Harley demo ride event, rode it last after a few other bikes throughout the day - I have to say even without it being on the fastest mode the acceleration was incredible. Felt much faster than any of the 114ci bikes, and was a ton of fun! Never thought I’d say that.
Is there a mode where it goes as slow as a normal Harley? Surely they wouldn't want to alienate their old owner base.
@@johncoops6897 no, it has different modes like rain, sport, highway, econ. Rain takes away around 60% of torque. By no means is it to alienate the customer base. Besides it's governor'd to go slower than a 107

You can ride Zen style on a souped up pedal bicycle. You certainly don’t need a $30,000 mad acceleration hyperbike.

What is the most expensive ELECTRIC motorcycle you can buy on Amazon? kzhead.info/sun/o76ko66nmHuDrWg/bejne.html
I live in maryland ☺️
You should check out the Somders Metacycle. It's a $5000 electric bike with an advertised range of 80 miles. It also has a quick swap battery.
@@bealbandz1884 - Good for you. My father was from Maryland. He owned a 1 acre vacant lot in Joppa. We lived in California. He constantly complained about taxes in CA. I asked him if he ever thought about moving back to Maryland. Build on his lot and be close to family. I'll quote him. "Hell no! It's hotter than hell in the summer and too damn cold in winter."
In UK the breakdown service vehicles can recharge you. Ducking embarrassing as it suggests you can't count.
okay so you got a break, you got a front break, and you got a throttle...Thats a scooter.
My BMW R1250RS has a 3.0s 0-60. It's neither a superbike nor a supercar, just a big twin with lots of torque. The LW S1 needs 120v @ 15a to charge, and while your generator is rated for 16.2a sustained, voltage will initially drop to around 100v before the motor steps up -- it's that lag the LW's power controller doesn't like so it throws the red light and says no.
Those aren't leads, that a charge port. It's made for charging the battery, not the other way around. (plus there are communication lines the specifically engage the power rails)
It was a joke, Jon.
“It should be an engine cycle” lol ! The fun you guys must have at that shop. All giggles I imagine.
Oh let me tell ya .;. i work on small engine (lawn mowers , chainsaws and such ) for a living . And i cant tell you how many people ive met that get all bent out of shape if you call it a motor .. Please ppl the term goes both ways . put your college English teacher cap away .
My two test rides on the Livewire left me with wishing I had an extra $30k sitting in my pocket. It was freaking awesome! I was going 100 mph before the salesman left the parking lot on the livewire he was riding.
Someone in the comments above said it would be good for slow riding only. The reason it's so expensive is because it's faster than a Banshee.
Yeah but the range on the electric bikes is horrible considering even heavy cruisers can get better range easily
@@joshuahoward332 the range is about the same as my KLX300SM. The difference is that I can refuel and continue riding. I always laugh at the range comments because most people don’t ride 100 miles at a time. When I was young and only had a motorcycle for transportation I rode 10 miles one way to work, and maybe 50 miles on a Saturday cruising Daytona Beach.
@@Dave-sw2dm I ride a 800 cruiser and with my larger fuel tank I’m able to go about 200 miles and honestly my cruiser bike is used for long curvy roads on the mountain sides where there is no electricity or power just the small gas station that supports the common phone charger which from the information I found, only way to charge this bike in under an hour is to you a stage 3 charger or a super charger. A regular outlet will take many ours to charge the bike.
@@joshuahoward332 , most people who buy an electric bike either have a short commute or add it to their stable of bikes. I’m sure those that bought the Livewire added it to their stable. I live on twisty roads and can do a 70 mile fun ride after work. Not having to stop for fuel would be nice. I just can’t justify the expense.

This is everything i would want to know about an electric motorcycle. Great review.
I own Livewire 279 of the first 500 sold, got 1,400 miles on it (crappy weather or I'd have more) absolutely love it, no Issues. About my 30th Bike and my 6th Harley been riding for 42 years.
What career path did you take.
Saw your Army Ret. profile pic and had to say thank you for your service to a brother in arms from one vet to another. I wonder if you could answer a question for me. I’m looking to get another bike and want to do some long trips. Any suggestions on the bike I need to go with? I have to stay at $7000 and under. Fixed income can put a drag on life at times. Lol
What's up Ahab. That's cool you got a livewire.
Rollyone I would honestly rather drive a street glider or cruiser for 30k then this electric bike. Nothing can beat the sound of a loud harley
@Rollyone as a BMW C-Evolution owner, I don't think it's worth the price. The C-Evolution is considered expensive for a maxiscooter at 15400 euro in my country. But a comparable Yamaha Tmax TechMax (petrol, not electric) costs 14999. Even with petrol costing close to 1.80 euro a litre, I doubt you're going to reclaim that extra initial investment.
i love how hes has a warehouse full of bikes meanwhile im watching with my helmet acting like im on a dirtbike
Probably the best, most interesting video on the HD Livewire on the u tubes. Great research on this, thank you!
I own this motorcycle in Perth, Western Australia. The looks on peoples faces when you whizz past or do a full throttle overtake (in silence) with Harley jacket on too, is always amusing... The bike is an assortment of high quality parts from other manufacturers put together with a Harley badge on... I LOVE IT. Trouble is - charging infrastructure is poor in Western Australia..
it's a great bike! I love mine as well
“Could we hook up a gasoline powered generator to this electric bike to charge it while riding?” So a hybrid motorcycle
Idk why they don't do that. Like a U-Boat.
Volt concept motorcycle!!
Chevy Volt is exactly what that idea is. Unfortunately Chevy killed the concept.
Just put some pedals on it and be done with it
Technically a gas powered motorcycle because the motor is basically an alternator at that point 🤣🤣
Fun fact, I was talking to my dealer principal a few weeks ago, and he told me that the reason Harley Davidson is delivering these bikes to the house is because the Dealerships that want to sell these are being FORCED to buy a really expensive charging station. Since many dealerships are not making a lot of cash these days as compared to last few years, they are not interested in buying the charging station or Paying for electricity to not only charge the new bikes, but also charge the customers bikes, should they decide to stop by and charge their bikes. Plus, they don't see them being a huge sales item, so they don't want to invest in the charger.
Nobody I know what’s a toy electric scooter
I honestly love the look but I’d want at least double the range for that price
I like how adding the generator just makes it a gas powered vehicle, making the electric aspect of the vehicle completely superfluous 😂
The acceleration and instant tourqe sets the ev apart from the internal combustion bike. Charging it with a gas generator is the equivalent of storing the electricity in the motorcycle and releasing it on demand.
"plug-in hybrid" makes sense for cars, but motos?
To stop the flame wars. Motors: run on electricity Engines: run on combustion I’ll see myself out.
10:35 when the camera guy realised there is a charging point 🤣🤣
bruh it was a joke. the whole point was to get it further than harley said. so they didnt want to charge
@@soulfly3438 they have so much satire in these videos, I love seeing the comments of people not getting the jokes.

The LiveWire makes me want to cry. When I saw the concept XR Sportster looking electric bike I said to myself it will be mine. Instead, we got a hugely expensive heavy monstrosity that I couldn't afford nor want. From what I've heard Harley's new strategy is to hire management that has no background or interest in motorcycles. Here is the result, they have succeeded in separating themselves from a hundred years of style and heritage and built a Tron bike. wtf
At least its not a chrome bucket of loud emptyness
I dont understand why they didnt call it an, "Electric Glide"
Right. Either that or the Electro Glide
I've been calling it the Lithium Glide for a bit, but I think Electric Glide is a great one.
Same reason they didn’t call the Pan America the “dirt glide”
Maybe that model is coming in the future.
That would be a disgusting offense for the Glides.

To be honest its looks like a great bike! The only thing i really miss is the sound! Its just such a big part of motorcycles..
kzhead.info/sun/nNR9ndewiIiufIU/bejne.html here's the solution
Agreed!
This is a new kind of sound, a cool and different sound IMO. Very futuristic :D But for engine sound lovers, especially Cafe Racers and Harley owners, this part is too important, and I understand why !
Sound and vibrations both
100% agree, think the sound of mine mayb the main reason I ride.
Most charging ports are diode protected to prevent backfeeding as that's a bad idea 😁 you can directly connect to the battery that's prolly Li-Ion or LiFePo4
The DC voltage will only get to the combo connector after authentication between DC station and bike. No DC anywhere in the home AC cable, it's just the AC from your outlet, the little box is only for safety check & com with the bike. The actual AC/DC conversion happens in the on-board charger which isn't that easy to access. Some vehicles have vehicle-to-load (V2L) and even vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) capabilities from the factory, but it's pretty dangerous to jury-rig yourself. If EV motors weren't disabled while plugged, the life expectancy of a charging station would be a few days (less of a problem with bikes, though)
I just checked the price here in Canada it will cost me $40,000 lol 😂
@Aman Mohajer it's a Harley, unless you buying used. I highly doubt the price drop.
@Aman Mohajer still wouldn't buy it :P

Jason, I was going to say the exact same thing! His “scenic shot” in Havre de Grace was at the David R. Craig Park where I have charged up before.
Oh, and he went up past the Conowingo Dam, where there is another ChargePoint station down at the waterside park.
I'm not riding just for how well it accelerates or how fast it goes, it goes beyond that. Electric is "the future" not because they are objectively better and all the consumers want that, but because the market slowly makes it harder and harder to cling to current vehicles, to classic designs or to non-digital technology.

Range was terrible on the first Tesla too. But they've getting great now. Harley is the first mass production manufacturer to do this. Don't talk to me about Zero. They're a hobby company. And they're not available most countries on the planet like a Harley or a Kawasaki, or even a Royal Enfield is. So, they've gone out on a limb here, but they're the first.

My electric skateboard battery was estimated at “10 miles”. 15 is no problem as it maintains its speed down every decline with no throttle. It also is no problem to get it the first 10-15 miles of acceleration by pushing with my foot, which I’ve read is where a sizable portion of e-batteries waste energy. The battery is also instantly swappable and fairly light. It’s also very easy to upgrade components as better products hit the market, such as the Electronic Skate Control and the motors. The only problem is cracks/road hazards, wet/rain, and people in cars.
The charging station at 10:40 was a riot!
I would love to see a 6 month review from an owner of this bike. $30K is alot of money for a bike that appears to be targeted to the 25-35 crow.
I think it's so early for these that price doesn't even really factor in for the people buying it. The early adopter status makes it worth it alone probably, as it wasn't meant to be a value proposition to begin with, more of a Halo product
I could make my own that is electric for 5-6k with the same mileage. Must be shooting for the boomer crowd because nobody in the age of 20-35 is going to afford it.

Zero makes some incredible bikes! I bought a 2020 DSR for delivery work, and with what I save in gas, oil changes ($500-800/mo), the bike is free. FREE!But the performance... wow! I blow by everybody with 0-60 in 2.6. But not having to deal with clutching, engine noise, vibration...and nothing but pure speed is a game changer... especially for new riders! Range is the top question. The DSR for standard riding (ie fast as possible) is about 80 miles. But if you lay off the throttle, I have seen over 200 miles of displayed range. Charging time (for level 2) is 2 hours from dead. That equates (in real world trips) to a beer, joint and brief stroll down Twitter for your halfway point. For delivery work I average 5-6 hours of riding time. But the best part of an electric bike is not how fast you can go, but how SLOW. Especially for off road, you have power/torque and control that is insane. This review is great, but undersells how amazing the total experience really is. You have to adjust your life around the bike, and it's absolutely worth it. The project is very young, but I am starting ZeroRides.com from Malibu, CA for donation-based rides and multi day trips, including Hwy 33 that takes you over 7,000 feet! So yeah, get a Zero.

@ALCLCF Not really. To get totally clear of an urban area and on some good twisty roads, it takes at least 50 highway miles to get there first. If you spend your whole day there, that will be an additional 100+ miles. With an E-Motorcycle, you will not have enough range for that.
@@roybatty- all cities are not built the same lol in LA you can travel a dozen miles in any direction and find twisty roads because many hills surround that city
Not sure where you live that you can blow through red lights on a bike and not get ticketed. Whether you’re in the street or at a crosswalk you still have to obey the rules of the road.
Great idea on the treadmilll ... what about building a portal rear wheel roller that has pedals and you basically STATIONARY BIKE pedal to re-charge the battery in a emergency road side scenario.
I'm gonna need that 'buddy shoots bike battery with a shotgun let's see what happens' video.
BOB, hey man want to go for a ride later? JOHN, no sorry my Harleys updating. BOB, ok ya mine needs to charge anyways ! JOHN , later dude.
GOBBLESS
Just charge it like your phone befoere going to bed, then it wont run out of battery the next day. Looks like ur phone or pc are updating all the time lol, must have some sad memories!
0:49 "HD is the first big, large, motorcycle manufacturer to produce a fully electric motorcycle." I guess that's what HD put in their press blurb, and I don't blame you for it. But BMW has been selling the C-Evolution since 2014. And that's completely ignoring the different South-East Asia specific manufacturers who basically beat everyone to it by several years. Now I know you're a HD fanboi, and that's fine. I also know you have basically no interest in scooters of any kind, and that's also fine. But HD is one of the late comers to the market for electric motorcycles. Brands like AGM, Kymco, Vespa, BMW, KTM, NIU, Energica, Lightning, Zero and the list goes on and on and on all handsomely beat HD to the market. And not by a matter of weeks, but by the better part of a decade.
If they are not American brands they do not exist to Americans...
The C evolution is a scooter lol
@@stephen2101 motorscooter. You need a motorcycle license for it.
Buy a ZERO. Done and done
I thought that Livewire is ugly, but the black one is beautiful.
Brother that's still the fastest 0-60 I've ever seen you do haha good job nice bike
I'd love an electric bike. How much as I like my Versys the thought of driving efficiently, sustainable, fast and quiet is really good to me. I hope they start dropping in prices soon.
Ewan mcgregor and Charlie boorman just used some slightly customised version of these for their series Long way up, 13,000 miles
I'm sure they were prototypes and one of them didn't make it . Plus , it showed you can't charge them in the freezing cold
@@rabfallon4507 Norwegians have a lot of ecars so there must be a way.
You guys are the Top Gear of motorbikes!
When u pulled out that blade to splice that wiring...and actually went to cut it. I spit my milk through my nose...dude that was soo funny..I really was holding my breath till I realized that you were funning...
Being a Harley the most important question is, what range does it get on a trailer? 😜
If something isn't loose or had already fallen off its not a real Harley.
darthlively or leaked oil
@@lukeweesner4172 I heard their electric models will get an optional oil tank and several nozzles to drip oil in random places to make dyed in the wool Harley owners feel at home.
you know what, the motor on my XL is rock solid reliable... it's just everything else that's the problem :)
There's actually an electric trailer option coming next year.
7:30 - I was almost about to congratulate you on being the proud owner of that electric motorcycle.
😅😅😅😂😂😂😂 I won't forget how nervous I got when I saw Shawn pull out that pocket knife...watching again 2022 and felt just the same...hahaha
And a balloon in the spokes for that genuine Harley Davidson sound.
So traveling on a livewire is like doing a trip on a Sportster. Stopping every 100ish miles but longer on stops.
I push my Sportster to 150 ish then I start getting nervous lol
120ish
