This is a 1973 interview. Years later, Pelé improoved his English skills. He learned the language when he played for New York Cosmos from 1975 to 1977. He was able to speak English, Spanish and Portuguese. R.I.P., Pelé.

It was also from the first of a three-week return visit to New York (only one year after "The Tonight Show" made the move to Burbank) which would prove to be Johnny's last. After that set of shows, 6B which was the show's New York home since the early '60's would be gutted and transformed into the set for WNBC-TV's "NewsCenter4."

In 1986, I had the opportunity to speak with Pelé for a few minutes in the presence of my two young sons, who were 12 and 10 years old at the time. After discussing football for a couple of minutes, Pelé did something that left a lasting impression on my sons and me. Despite not being a tall man, he knelt down and looked my sons in the eyes, asking their names and if they were going to school and practicing any sports. He also told them to love their parents and teachers. Today, my sons are close to 50 and still consider Pelé to be the greatest sportsman in the world, not just because of his exceptional football skills, but also because of his humility. Pelé figure is Forever.

He not only stopped a war back in the 60's (Nigeria Civil War) so they could watch him play, but met important and famous people. He met Presidents Carter, Ford, Obama, Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and Queen Elizabeth (who went to Brazil and watched him play in 1968), and celebrities like Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley and many more. I met Pele once, when I worked at UN Radio. He was one of the *nicest* people I've ever met. And he had a smile that could be used for a lighthouse. And apparently he was the best soccer player ever born.

I felt this could have been a trainwreck. He was lucky he knew some Spanish. Very well versed man in education. He read a lot. I felt like toward the end, he was getting steamed and it could have ended very badly, because we have seen nights where his ego or mood affected the show. I get the feeling this was out of respect for Pele.

I met Pele in the dressing room, in New York Giants stadium when I was 18 years old. We shared the same dressing room. What a thrill for me. He had tight security. When he went from the massage room to his locker he had 2 body guards with him. He had strong muscles in his legs. Pele is the KING.

I met him when I was a ball boy for the Cosmos. I was probably 10 or 11 years old. He signed an autograph and actually spoke to me for about a minute which felt like an hour!!! He was so in demand back then. What a tremendous human being. To this day one of the highlights of my life!!! He is sorely missed.

I saw Pele‘s last game as a professional in 1977 in Portland Oregon when the New York Cosmos played the Seattle Sounders. He was amazing even at the end of his career in my eyes!

You know Pele was probably the greatest ambassador for football/soccer ever ...and probably for Sport in general. Wish more of the modern athletes were likable and humble as him. You could see how he genuinely won Johnny over with his demeanor and personality. Also his athleticism. Two of the greatest entertainers on the planet who are sadly gone but not forgotten.

Have you heard of Messi by any chance? Insane skills, at 35 playing like a 20yo, humble, recognized anywhere in the world, one wife, faithful, three recognized children. Just a class athlete all around. This interview was fun, but you don’t know who Pelé really was to be calling him a great ambassador lol cheated on every wife he had, physical abuse, unrecognized children from different women, just a trash person but all conveniently swept under the carpet because he was a national hero lol Dig into the real history of Pelé, you’ll be surprised at how narcissistic and unpleasant the guy was. Messi is not only the best to ever play the game, but he’s a grounded individual always surrounded by family and no skeletons in his closet like Pelé.

@@SunnyDiegoProduction I 100% agree with you about Messi not knowing much about him but just seeing him on the field and interviewed I get that impression of him about being very humble and modest. The Pele information you provide surprises me. He did a lot for kids I know but how much of that is just for image and how much is genuine? I don't like to categorize people one way or another as we are all shades of grey. Some good, some bad. We can all do good things and we can all do bad things. It's like the old expression ...sometimes you never want to meet your heroes because you could be disappointed. I saw an interview with Robert Plant once where the audience got to ask him questions. The best thing one person said about Robert is that he randomly met him one day walking out of Central Park and got to talk to him. He told Robert with his question in the interview ..."You are a real person". To me saying that to any celebrity is the greatest compliment they can get. So many are so full of themselves and self centered and so image conscious. I don't know if Pele was like that or not in private but from afar he seemed very pleasant and modest. Having said all that ....he was very talented....also things have been said about Johnny as well but he was so talented and entertaining. I guess sometimes you just have to take things at face value and just hope the heroes you meet are at least real. No one is perfect and sometimes it is us fans who have too high of expectations.

Pele was a very nice and humble man. Just because you like Messi who also is a good person, you didn’t have to trash Pele! That was a different time 60 years ago when a lot of famous men fooled around outside their marriage like President Kennedy. That didn’t make him a terrible person. It’s a different world now. Pele helped a lot of people in his life time and he promoted peace and friendship around the world. He was a very kind man.

It is impossible to presence this level of interviews nowadays along with those “hosts”, thinking every second how to interrupt their guests successfully

@@liegiyusain1465 Sorry, disagree. Pelé scored 1280 goals along his career. Messi, an outstanding player, but far away from Pelé, doesn't have 800 goals. Pelé played 3 World Cups and won 2. He's the only one to acomplish that. The first one, with only 17 years, he scored 3 goals in the semi final and 2 goals in the final against Sweden. At this age, he was crownded the "King of football". Messi has just won his first World Cup now, at 35 years ....just ending his time. There is no possible comparison between Pelé and Messi or any other player in the soccer world. He's simply the best, the GOAT.

This has blown me away. At first I thought this interview will go nowhere. But alas...goodness , what a show. Pele knows more than playing football. He knew how to sell himself. No wonder even in the racist 60s and 70s this black man was the best and most expensive player. I consider Pele the greatest soccer player that has ever lived on the planet. He was quick on the ball, diligent, intelligent, with killer instinct while scoring goals, and very humble. Great guest appearance by Pelé! At first I wondered why they didn't simply use an interpreter, but it turns out better that they did not - despite the language gap they interacted beautifully. It seemed like a very short 15 minutes. Pelé will remain the greatest of all time in soccer. He not only did it first, he did it better than anyone. May he rest in peace.

Pele was the most influencial and famous player in the world. He not only stopped a war back in the 60's (Nigeria Civil War) so they could watch him play, but met important and famous people. He met Presidents Carter, Ford, Obama, Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and Queen Elizabeth (who went to Brazil and watched him play in 1968), and celebrities like Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley and many more. I'm from Brazil and I really enjoy watching Johnny Carson, who I also consider the King of television, even though I'm not from the US and didn't have the opportunity to see his shows when they were shown on television. I watched a lot of Letterman on cable and I met Conan watching The Simpsons. The three are the best television hosts in the USA. I’m very happy to see Pelé at Carson now. Thanks!

Do meu inglês nivel Joel Santana, entendi que a entrevista ocorreu ainda quando Pelé jogava no Santos mas já estava aposentado da seleção brasileira. Provavelmente em 1973 ou 1974 pois ele disse que jogaria até Outubro, se alguém ai puder confirmar. Pouco tempo depois estaria brilhando na terra do Tio Sam.

As a Brazilian I'm amazed to see Pelé being able to communicate in English even though you can clearly see that his language level at the time was a beginner level. At that time people didn't even think that something like the Internet would be available in many different places in the world. Pelé was a genius and being a genius is not related to your education level but also how your brain develop different skills. What this guy represented to people is outstanding.

This is a 1973 interview. Years later, Pelé improoved his English skills. He learned the language when he played for New York Cosmos from 1975 to 1977. He was able to speak English, Spanish and Portuguese. R.I.P., Pelé.
It was also from the first of a three-week return visit to New York (only one year after "The Tonight Show" made the move to Burbank) which would prove to be Johnny's last. After that set of shows, 6B which was the show's New York home since the early '60's would be gutted and transformed into the set for WNBC-TV's "NewsCenter4."

In 1986, I had the opportunity to speak with Pelé for a few minutes in the presence of my two young sons, who were 12 and 10 years old at the time. After discussing football for a couple of minutes, Pelé did something that left a lasting impression on my sons and me. Despite not being a tall man, he knelt down and looked my sons in the eyes, asking their names and if they were going to school and practicing any sports. He also told them to love their parents and teachers. Today, my sons are close to 50 and still consider Pelé to be the greatest sportsman in the world, not just because of his exceptional football skills, but also because of his humility. Pelé figure is Forever.

I felt this could have been a trainwreck. He was lucky he knew some Spanish. Very well versed man in education. He read a lot. I felt like toward the end, he was getting steamed and it could have ended very badly, because we have seen nights where his ego or mood affected the show. I get the feeling this was out of respect for Pele.

I met Pele in the dressing room, in New York Giants stadium when I was 18 years old. We shared the same dressing room. What a thrill for me. He had tight security. When he went from the massage room to his locker he had 2 body guards with him. He had strong muscles in his legs. Pele is the KING.

I met him when I was a ball boy for the Cosmos. I was probably 10 or 11 years old. He signed an autograph and actually spoke to me for about a minute which felt like an hour!!! He was so in demand back then. What a tremendous human being. To this day one of the highlights of my life!!! He is sorely missed.

The Pele information you provide surprises me. He did a lot for kids I know but how much of that is just for image and how much is genuine? So many are so full of themselves and self centered and so image conscious. I don't know if Pele was like that or not in private but from afar he seemed very pleasant and modest. Having said all that ....he was very talented....also things have been said about Johnny as well but he was so talented and entertaining. I guess sometimes you just have to take things at face value and just hope the heroes you meet are at least real. No one is perfect and sometimes it is us fans who have too high of expectations.
Pele was a very nice and humble man. Just because you like Messi who also is a good person, you didn’t have to trash Pele! That was a different time 60 years ago when a lot of famous men fooled around outside their marriage like President Kennedy. That didn’t make him a terrible person. It’s a different world now. Pele helped a lot of people in his life time and he promoted peace and friendship around the world. He was a very kind man.

Johnny Carson was so kind and patient to hear our king…he tries as much as possible to extract a really good conversation from it, even speaking some spanish. It is impossible to presence this level of interviews nowadays along with those “hosts”, thinking every second how to interrupt their guests successfully

At this age, he was crownded the "King of football". Messi has just won his first World Cup now, at 35 years ....just ending his time. As a kid I hardly watched soccer in the 70s…but we still had a Pele poster on the wall. He changed a lot in and out of sports.
This is an example of why Johnny Carson was such a class act. He didn’t need to prove himself to anyone, but he took his job so seriously that he made this interview work and interesting despite the language gap!

This has blown me away. At first I thought this interview will go nowhere. But alas...goodness , what a show. Pele knows more than playing football. He knew how to sell himself. No wonder even in the racist 60s and 70s this black man was the best and most expensive player. I consider Pele the greatest soccer player that has ever lived on the planet. He was quick on the ball, diligent, intelligent, with killer instinct while scoring goals, and very humble. Johnny talks to him a little bit in Spanish and Pelé understands that’s the beauty of Spanish and Portuguese, they’re very similar. Through out the years Pelé learned English very well.

Great guest appearance by Pelé! At first I wondered why they didn't simply use an interpreter, but it turns out better that they did not - despite the language gap they interacted beautifully. It seemed like a very short 15 minutes. Pelé will remain the greatest of all time in soccer. He not only did it first, he did it better than anyone. May he rest in peace.

I'm from Brazil and I really enjoy watching Johnny Carson, who I also consider the King of television, even though I'm not from the US and didn't have the opportunity to see his shows when they were shown on television. I watched a lot of Letterman on cable and I met Conan watching The Simpsons. The three are the best television hosts in the USA. I’m very happy to see Pelé at Carson now. Thanks!

I was never into sports at all but Pele was a legend of the game. I couldn't help but watch if a clip happened to be shown on TV with him playing. I never knew he did an appearance with Johnny. Was great to see. R.I.P. Pele.

I was impressed with Johnny's command of Spanish, as well as Pepe's albeit limited ability to speak English. Two of the G.O.A.T.s, for sure RIP.
I was glad Johnny Carson pointed out that Brazilians speak Portuguese and how he proceeded to use his limited Spanish because he was knowledgeable enough to know that Portuguese and Spanish are similar sometimes yet are two different languages.

Nowadays there would be an interpreter for such a huge, legendary show and guest but this still worked and charmed the audience without being patronizing or the guest feeling uncomfortable. Before my time but 2 established legends in their own right...salute!!

As a Brazilian I'm amazed to see Pelé being able to communicate in English even though you can clearly see that his language level at the time was a beginner level. At that time people didn't even think that something like the Internet would be available in many different places in the world. Pelé was a genius and being a genius is not related to your education level but also how your brain develop different skills. What this guy represented to people is outstanding.
