2022 Toyota Land Cruiser VS Land Rover Defender - Crash Tests
Toyota’s big off-road wagon has just received a five-star crash rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).
The LandCruiser 300 Series is the first vehicle to receive a test result in 2022, and ANCAP said the big SUV achieved the second highest score to date for Vulnerable Road User Protection under the stringent 2020-2022 testing protocols, recording 81 per cent.
It performed well in the autonomous emergency braking (AEB) pedestrian tests in a turning scenario, and for forward collision mitigation.
The Toyota also scored a high mark of 89 per cent for Adult Occupant Protection, although it lost some points, with ANCAP warning that occupants in oncoming vehicles were at risk.
Despite not being sold with a front centre airbag, the LandCruiser scored full points in the far side impact tests because there was minimal occupant movement towards the other side of the vehicle.
The ANCAP spokesperson confirmed that a vehicle doesn't have to be fitted with a front centre airbag to acheive a top score for Adult Occupant Protection. The vehicle must perform well in a far-side impact crash test that evaluates occupant-to-vehicle and occupant-to-occupant performance. ANCAP says it does not prescribe the measures to acheive a top result, but that centre airbags generally work well in smaller cars where cabin space is at a premium.
For the Child Occupant Protection tests, the SUV scored highly with 88 per cent, but top tether anchor points aren’t available in the third row which has prompted ANCAP to warn buyers that child restraints are not recommended in the third row.
Finally, the LandCruiser scored 77 per cent for Safety Assist, with ANCAP praising the fitment of driver aids and collision avoidance systems like AEB and lane keeping assist.
The 2022 LandCruiser comes standard with AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection and junction assist, as well as lane keeping aids, an advanced speed assistance system and lane departure warning.
Toyota now matches one of its key rivals, the Land Rover Defender, with its five-star ANCAP rating. The LandCruiser scored higher in all key test areas except Child Occupant Protection, which matched the Defender’s 88 per cent score.
ANCAP chief executive officer Karla Hoorweg praised the LandCruiser, highlighting its improvement over the model it replaced.
"Larger, heavier vehicles always present higher risks for other road users and this is why ANCAP focusses on a vehicle’s ability to either avoid a crash, or reduce its impact, through our suite of Safety Assist tests,” she said.

I love that the defender automatically engages the hazard lights during impact, that's a very old "safety" feature some of the 1994 and later discovery models had
Could be an indicator for door locks unlocking for safety and rescue

I’d say you’re giving the Defender waay too much credit. I’ve seen brand new looking Rovers in junkyards that were mechanically totaled
LMAO typical clueless american comment. Funny for two reasons, number one, you think 100k miles is a lot (it is in your country where everyone is too dumb to take care of cars, but not in places where people are not totally uneducated) , and two, both are gonna do way more than 100k easily if maintained. 100k is not enough to break in the engine. I've seen Audi engines taken apart with 800k km on them that still had cylinder honing marks visible in them, meaning, zero wear. It's about taking care of a car, but you wouldn't understand that, as your country is used to not servicing cars at all and driving them until a light comes on, and then leasing a new one.

Monocoque structure and frame chassis structure. The monocoque is rigid due to its one-piece construction, is inexpensive to manufacture, and is lightweight. And it's good for crash testing. The frame is great for rough terrain, towing, and carrying loads, but it's heavy and unsuitable for crash testing. Currently the frame structure is Land Cruiser, Mercedes G Wagon, Jeep Wrangler etc. Land Rover converted to monocoque.

Due to more solid shape and weight the punch on LC is more impactful while Defender minimise the impact due to its body shape .
The LandCruiser scored higher than defender in all key test areas except Child Occupant Protection, which matched the Defender's 88 per cent score. So the land cruiser is actually better at adsorbing the impact
The car structure is supposed to be designed to absorb all the impact and distribute forces throughout the whole car, otherwise, passengers are the ones who are taking all the impact. So, in this case, Toyota does a better job at distributing impact. People usually think a car with no dents in an accident is strong and protect passengers better, that's not all in most cases. It actually can injure passengers badly, worse than a crumble car. Once you are at that point of accident, the car condition does not matter tbh, it's the car that can keep you from severe injury that matters.
@@tant.5864 If met with the same interior design, I'd take a car that crumbles as little as possible than a car that will turn into a spherical mess upon impact. Simple as that.
@@jesusdoesntexist7764 bros really insecure huh
@@ray4493 I'm stating over the facts on research and the rational information explaining the misunderstanding of the original post that Defender minimize the impact better than LC because it contains in its original shape better. I have no intention knowing what kind of car you would choose tbh. Your lack of of knowledge in car design safety does not interest me. Safe car is the car the crumbles where it's supposed to for force distribution and stays solid where it's supposed to in order to save lives. The whole solid piece is just a moving coffin. Also, just to clarify that I'm only talking about minor to moderate accidents, not severe ones because all of the cars have limits to its safety. You can still die in Rolls Royce if you're all the circumstances are perfect for that.

The defender seems to leap away when hit hard from the side. If it's hit by a heavy falling rock while climbing a slope, it won't take as much damage from that as from being "smacked" down the slope by that.

right im here to calm the slander on the defender. jaguar land rover as a whole over the last 5 or 6 years have truly pulled their heads in surrounding reliability, and within their lineup the only car to still have issues is the discovery, this is because it is still based on an older platform and engine lineup. the new defenders have been quite good in terms of reliability, even beating out close competitors like the g wagon. Cant wait to see them thrive once they are fully over the bad reputation they no longer deserve with their new vehicles.
What is the result?
The defender will be safer as it will spend most of it's time in the garage being repaired after breakdowns.

Cliche af.
One of the characteristics of European cars is that they break down more frequently, making it easier for mechanics to obtain money for repairs. Japanese cars are made in such a way that regular maintenance and inspections are a matter of course, so they are characterized by very few breakdowns. Of course, the decision is based on design, price, and safety, but safety is very important in the absence of daily breakdowns. If a car stops due to a breakdown in the middle of the road while driving at high speed, you could lose a loved one in a rear-end collision. You will know which car to choose then.
