I Took a Last Minute Cruise on An Old Ship - Worth It?

When I saw a cruise advertised for $57 per night, I knew I had to give it a go.
My favourite Mia Tui bags! emmacruises.com/5-bags-i-brin... 😇🥳
In reality, it did end up costing a little bit more than that but after months of being cold in England, I saw that this cruise was sailing from Greece and I decided to go for it.
I knew that there was no guarantee of good weather at this time of year, I didn’t know how I’d like cruising on such a small and old ship and I had no idea about the real reason that this cruise was so cheap. I wouldn’t find that out until I got on board, I also didn’t know at this point that we would leave some guests behind in one of the ports but there's nothing I could have done about that anyway.
We flew out from London to board the ship and after a quick taxi ride to the port it was time to embark. Our luggage was taken from the car to be delivered to our cabins later and after what could have only been around 5 minutes in the terminal we were ready to board the ship. It was the easiest embarkation ever, helped by the fact we’d already checked in online and I even watched the safety videos on the plane to save time.
The ship that we were boarding was the Celebrity Infinity, she was built in 2001 and is just under half the size of the current biggest cruise ship in the world. I assumed the small size meant there would be less entertainment options, maybe less food but I was sure that she had lots of refits since her launch.

    • If you ever arrive at cruise ship and there are "emma cookies" then you will know that they have recogniced you. Great and surprisingly good cruise where the ship never did feel really old, but remember: Are they really old ships ? I can remember QE 2 when it was 25 years or so end of the 80s and I would not be sure if that had been looking better. Long time ago, but this ship looked great at least whereever you went and showed us. I only watch these videos from time to time and most likeyl if they are extraordinary by the title cause the rather new ships have become twins and are loosing character which was not the case this time. I had thought it might end terrible, but it seems like you have enjoyed it a lot. Good luck for your next choice - must be hard to decide based on the huge amount of cruise ship around the world and in europe.

It was a 10 day cruise around Hawaii and repositioning to Canada. It was a wonderful cruise. The last for us. My wife passed away 2 months after we got home. I am still cruising. not as much now. • Just to be clear, the Celebrity Millennium class ships (Millennium, Infinity, Summit and Constellation) are great ships. And Celebrity doesn't let them run down or provide less in the way of quality. I would sail on any of them any time, and I was recently on the Ascent. They are a little different experience, but wonderful in their own way. Also, the smaller ships can go to ports that the larger ships can't go to. Glad you had a great time, Emma. I do want to point out that dresses aren't "required". I've been on eight Celebrity cruises and never took a dress or a skirt. I accessorize around a nice pair of black slacks.

    • Agree with you and was on an early sailing of the Ascent. Could you find a better ship at any price. Really. Show me one. OK The Oasis class ships are unique and give you a unique experience. If you want to do a Transatlantic these are amazing ships. Their layouts have actual mini neighborhoods inside. A unique protected completely separate walking track almost a quarter of a mile long. And you are right about the infinity. Celebrity does a great job on all their ships. Bar none. We are Elite on Celebrity and Diamond on RCCL. With that said a few years ago we were on the very last American cruise to Cuba. The very last one. Thats a shame that we are doing this to the Cuban people who desperately need our financial support as they are impoverished and without hope although they do try. We were on the very very old Monarch of the Seas and it was a sad ship. Im glad it was only three days on that ship. So there is some merit to an argument like this but I would put it this way, is it worth it to be on a very old and not updated ship.

    • I LOVE the Celebrity Millennium class ships - I know where to find stuff, and I love the Solarium. It's always toasty and calm, with no kids screaming cos they provide separate areas for different types of guests. It might sound silly but I rank an indoor pool area really high when I'm choosing a trip, even if I'm going somewhere really hot. I also think the Celebrity buffets are some of the best for the pricing, and the restaurant staff are a lot better trained than some of their competitors.

    • I took my first Celebrity Cruise to Mexico Out of L.A. on the Stolstice. It was amazing. We splurged for all the restos and the French one was one of the best restos I have ever eaten in and that is saying a lot as I have eaten in most of the "good" restaurants in the SF bay area. It is my go-to line as it is just a little more costly than the budget-premium lines and has a great compliment of guests and staff.

  • Admittedly, I have never been on a cruise. That said, I thoroughly enjoy your videos, Emma and this is one of my favorites. I think that this is as big of a ship as I would care to sail on. I love the feeling of moving over the water on small boats. You lose that with floating cities. Also, whatever a ship has to offer that can't be appreciated in the available time in the duration of the cruise is superfluous. I get why some people love an abundance of choices, but give me a comfortable room, a reasonable selection of well-prepared foods, a bit of good entertainment, a comfortable deck chair, a bottle of Scotch... I think I would be happy. That indoor pool arrangement looks particularly nice, though it always seemed a bit illogical to climb into a boat to swim. 😅

The old town is charming. There's numerous sites to visit from pre-Greek to late Ottoman times very close by; if you time it right you can catch an ancient play at an ancient amphitheatre with great acoustics. There's options for swimming and hiking. You can also engage in some nearby island hopping (Hydra, Spetses) and these are pretty distinctive - and not nuked out of all character by mass tourism.

Never in my life have I considered going on a celebrity cruise until I watch this one from you. The giant ships do not appeal to me at all being trapped, forced to be in lines forced to wait on everything because of the massive number of people this has made me think that maybe I will start looking at these types of things when it’s less crowded. The age of the ship doesn’t bother me at all I love that it’s smaller.

You were spot on with your comments and we had a great time on the Infinity. We are on Virgin in September. Looks like it could be a shock to our system.😮 Keep up the great Videos. Thanks Dave.

  • As for the dining rooms! I think this is something that, like shopping habits, will sway back and forth. People flocked to malls, then to boutiques, then back to malls etc., etc., Houses do this in North America. Open concept. More rooms....open concept...rinse repeat!

  • I did a 11 day cruise on a constellation class ship like this one and it was one of my best cruises ever. That was back in the day where Elite was the top tier of Captain's Club. Anyway I love long cruises on smaller ships because you get a chance to know the crew and fellow passengers. I exchanged Christmas cards with couple from our dining room table for a decade.

  • A cruise was something I'd not particularly considered before (most likely due to my ill-informed cliched preconceptions about such things), so somewhat to my surprise, I finid myself about to pop my cruise cherry later this year with a Princess British Isles cruise. My Mum at 82yrs wanted to try one whilst she's still able to, so she opted for the peace of mind of being simultaneously home and away...and, I wasn't about to turn down the opportunity of going along for the ride. I came across your channel (amongst many) whilst doing my 'homework' and I thank you for the detailed information I've gleaned from your work on here. It's been really helpful and much appreciated, and the style of presentation has for me, been the best. Furthermore, it's most definitely, whetted my appetite for cruises! Whether I'll like crusing or not remains to be seen, but as someone who's not particularly fussed (yet!) about all the cruise 'bells and whistles', the cruise ship in this particularly video looked flippin' perfect, and if all goes well, I'll definitely be looking out for this 'old lady' as a possibility for a 2025 cruise. Thank you for work which is the perfect combination of informative and enjoyable.

  • Great fun to see Infinity again. Thanks for "taking us along". My wife and I are "loyal to Royal" albeit brand agnostic within their eco-system. Sailed Infinity only once - in '17 on repositioning cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Santiago Chile. Canal transit and equator crossing all in the same voyage. Always enjoy to more sedate vibe on Celebrity - and yes the cookies (and food) are standouts!

  • Great video (as ever), and I chuckled when I realized it was the Infinity which we sailed on a few months ago for a Spain - Portugal cruise. We had also sailed on the Infinity for a South American Buenos Aires to Valparaiso cruise in 2015. Having sailed on all the Millennium class ships (Constellation, Infinity, Millennium, and Summit) as well as multiple Solstice class ones, it's hard for me to not recommend the "old" and "aging" ships in their fleet at a nice discount to the "new" Edge class pricing. For adults, Celebrity is a great option. And we always love the "weird" art on-board too. These small (by modern standards) ships are a real sweet spot for affordability and crowds with no sacrifices for service & food.

  • I have sailed on the Infinity several times in the early to mid 2000's. Looks like she's in good shape. At the time she was considered cutting edge and a "larger" ship. Funny to hear her described as an old, small ship now...lol. The grand staircase in the atrium, the main dining room, and the aqua spa(solarium) were always some of my favorite features of this beautiful ship.

    • I was thinking the same thing? if Cruise shipping is your thing, note night over large night club, it' everything? missing passengers, all the big ship have, launch boat, for where ship to big for the port, or there no port? why could leave one behind, for the stragglers, they could easy catch up ship on it on root to next stop?

  • Haha, 23 year old ship - we sailed on the Celebrity Millennium X in its maiden season, I think about that long ago. Apparently one of the propeller shafts was slightly bent so they couldn’t go full speed, frequently getting embarrassed by older ships between ports. To said the brand new ship would have to go into dry dock for repairs after that first Caribbean season. Great all around experience, perhaps a bit more pampered than we preferred since sister Royal Caribbean was more typical for us.

  • 19:01 Where I grew up, it was pretty common that in late January, we'd get a week of -30 °C or colder, with a wind chill that would push it down into the -50s °C... followed in early February by a week of +4 °C. Let me tell you, that feels positively _tropical_ after -55 °C with wind chill! 😹

This ship reminded me a bit of Zuiderdam, which also has comfy bench seating in the main lounge. It also has great carpet, ceilings and interesting/unusual art objects scattered around the ships. Great video!
