Natural instinct. They use their touch to make sure something is edible before they really look at it. In the wild they often reach on water to grab things to eat so they can't see it anyways.

I love how she still instinctively "washed" each of the treats in the first exercise, maybe because she was standing on a shiny counter. (Is that stained concrete, by the way?) And I now wonder how good raccoon eye sight is, since she seemed to follow the pattern of "go to last place it was, then sniff around, then count." On the rest of it, though... pur genius.

My favorite part of this was during the bowl challenge when Piper was shown the goldfish before it was put under a bowl how Piper always reached out for it and then the second it vanished under the bowl how disappointed Piper looked. Like “Yes! Treat! Wait… what?”
Raccoon intelligence. They wait til you go to sleep and open the fishing lure box and then carefully insert them into your hair being careful not to hook themselves. Raccoons...the ultimate critter. LOL.
Food one doesnt give me a warm and fuzzy. Raccoons have a keen sense of smell that they use to find food, and certain scents can irritate or disrupt them. Some people try to use these scents as a deterrent to keep raccoons out of their homes.Dec 2, 2021

This probably isn't a good test because the raccoon can smell the treats under the bowl even if it had never seen which one they were put under.

I LOVE Racoon's, such intelligence Animals. I see them coming into Family Lives more and more. Like the 50s, when we brought CAT in from BARNS. To be House hold PETS. When my WILD Racoon's Quit coming I got SUPER GLIDERS. I like having them on my Shoulders are I walk around. The one Female just LOVES to LICK my Forehead when I greet her with my Head just out side her Beddy- by. I think it is her way of just telling me she's HAPPY. I have 3 total 2 Males, and of course my baby girl. They SLEEP all DAY, then want to go for a RIDE at NIGHT Don't recommend them for KIDS. They like to PLAY way past KIDS bed time. Just a FYI to Parents Looking at them as PETS.

But did you wipe down counter to get rid of the smells from before ? I think she would have nailed it every time, if you had Wiped it down in between. She's very smart, so I think she was confused by the scents from before

@@G.DD3SS yes ! But Animals use their sense of Smell when it comes to tracking food when they don't see it in plain Sight.
@@sherry866 I get that. Her instinct is to use her nose but the challenge is whether she will actually override her instincts. If they wipe off the residual scent from the counter, she would easily locate the food using instinct and it would tell us nothing about her intellect. It would be too easy for her and would not be a test of intelligence. By leaving the residual scent, it's easier to distinguish whether she is using memory or her sense of smell to locate the food.

In the UK one of our theme parks called chessington World of adventures they have a pet racoon first one in the UK I believe they do a racoon show and tell for lillte kids to learn about the animal the theme park is a zoo two

Come on dude, invite him to a game of chess...you wouldn't test the intelligence of Einstein by throwing a bag over his head and timing how long it'll take him remove it. Not that it wouldn't be fun to watch, tho this is coming from someone who took a little over 20 minutes to get out from under the towel she through on herself, testing her own intelligence, so...
