5 power plays in ONE GAME and you can’t score on any of them. Every year I question my choice to cheer for this team
To make it even worse, Boston went 1/2 (we wont count the empty netter lol), and have scored a PPG in every single game. Leafs can go toe to toe with Bruins at even strength, but getting slaughtered on special teams is why they are down 2-1.

The thing that seperate good teams from great ones is overcoming adversity. Injuries, bad calls, being down in a series. The Leafs are not the only team this happens to. The problem with the Leafs is they seem to crumple in the face of adversity everytime.

Additionally, one of bostons power plays was a delay of game for putting the puck over the glass. The refs only gave Boston 2 non-automatic power plays, vs 5 for the leafs, while also missing calls against the leafs. Complaining that the bruins paid the refs while going 0/5 on the pp and 1/3 on the pk is hilarious.
Let’s also not forget that Bertuzzi was warned all night for shenanigans, he continued, and so of course he’s never getting a blatant call. And if Matthews and Tavares go down any easier, I’d think they have rubber bands for backbones. 🙄

The part about "MacKinnon wouldn't have left the ice in the last 5 minutes"... maybe the Leafs didn't use Matthews that way in this game, but I watched them use Matthews exactly that way when he was on 69 goals in a tie game vs. Detroit in a meaningless game 80 of the regular season. He took a 58 second shift with a little over 5 minutes left, left the ice for a minute or so, and then played literally the entire last 3:33 of the third period. They tried harder to get Matthews 70 goals than they are trying to win a playoff game.

Keefe was too busy complaining about everything else to teach his $56M powerplay to score at least once on 5 powerplay opportunities
Only a matter of time before Keefe panics over Mitch's poor play/Mitch whines and he reunites 34 & 16, thus breaking up the ONLY dangerous line Toronto has had this series.
Nylander or not, 1/11 on the powerplay with the greatest goal-scorer in the NHL is frankly shameful. Leafs coaching staff should feel embarrassed.
100% the pp and pk is all on coaching. keefe is the biggest piece of garbage coach in the league, carried in the reg season by matthews marner and them all. he is trash, i WISH we had cassidy or literally anybody.

Gotta be honest Steve, Marner was absolutely atrocious out there tonight. The number of offensive-zone turnovers was unforgivable and a huge reason why the leafs couldn't get anything going on the powerplay.

Completely agree, regular season Marner is one of my favourite players on the ice, but I don't want him on the ice (or team) during the playoffs if this is the caliber of player we're going to see. Just not good enough, I was watching him skate laps around the net for no apparent reason while there was a board battle, either get in position or help out, the actual hell are you doing?
As a Bruins fan he was your most dangerous player in that game. The only one who had me nervous holding the puck tbh.
Yep, I was expecting a Marner rant in this video and am frankly astonished there wasn't one. Outside of one nice pass, he was brutal almost everywhere, in every zone, on every shift. He's afraid to get involved in net-front chaos, he's waving at someone on the bench instead of, I dunno, finding the puck and putting it in the net. So soft on pucks (not as soft as Liljegren, but then few are).

Marchand is arguably the most valuable player in the NHL when it comes to playoff hockey. The way he can get into other teams' heads while also being close to a point per game player is amazing.

Leafs now 1-6 in their last 7 playoff games at home. They are now 7-20 at home in their last 27 playoff games. The refs even gave the Leafs help lastnight giving them 5 power plays and only 3 for the Bruins.

Been a leafs fan since 72. I have cheered for them for decades. I have had high hopes for decades. I have had patience for decades. I’ve also had disappointment for decades. I’m not any less a leaf fan. I’ve just come to accept them for who they are. A good regular season team that gives me joy when they win a game… but I have zero expectations of any success when it comes playoff time! So, go leafs go… but until they show me playoff success, I’ll continue to doubt if they will.

Sammy is just about the only guy on that team who actually gives a fuck! It's not Sammy's fault that the Offence this team sunk all the money into can't score on FIVE power plays, or that they have an alarming trend to lose control of the puck in the worst ways that make his job harder then it needs to be.

The elephant in the room for the Leafs Core 4 is - Matthews only generates between 33% and %50 of the assist compared to the current top 25 NHL assist leaders. That is a significant weakness for any NHL first line Centre. Last night Marchand was the super star not Matthews. There is no way with the above significant weakness - that Matthews should ever be paid the top NHL pay. Go Leafs go! 😀 Just fairly pay Auston the same as other top goal scorers get.

its not the number its the calls that leads to goals that are game breaking. when they SUPLEX'D the TOP NHL goal scorer infront of a ref then scored seconds later it is GAME BREAKING. mentally for the team as well. REFS WON THIS. even if they gave leafs 1000 power plays to compensate. they still won it for boston by that non-call. use common sense and try to understand hockey
@@unimpressively_charming you can’t just retroactively decide what’s fair and what’s not based on whether the opposing team seized the opportunity or not. Toronto had plenty of chances and if they scored on any of the opportunities they got from the refs, Boston could be claiming the same logic-less argument. A penalty is a penalty, what happens afterwards can make a call or non-call more frustrating, but you can’t argue that the result should change the call just because you don’t like the result. Leafs didn’t score. Unfortunate for them, doesn’t make it less fair just because the Bruins did. Both sides have valid gripes with the officiating last night. My main issue is the moaning about the Frederic goal, because that was a clear dive by Bert, and no, the play was rightfully not called dead.

It's not that they didn't call things it's that they didn't call the one that leads to goals. Those are serious game changers. It's one thing to not score on a PP but it's a different thing when the offending team makes a dirty plag and a goal goes in right after. It ruins the game

Besides the Leafs were 0 for 5? On the pp? If the refs called offsetting penalties, which they should have, it would have just been 4 on 4. The Leafs still lost by 2. The refs missed a lot on both teams but it is the playoffs and they let them play for the most part.

What I've learned from this series is Jim Montgomery is coaching circles around Sheldon Keefe. I absolutely love it.
That's been true of every coach they've faced in the playoffs since he got to Toronto, including a guy who is no longer coaching in this league because everyone knows he's terrible. The math's pretty easy on that one. I'm shocked they extended him after Treliving got the GM job. This whole experience has been fascinating, watching a guy as championship-infused as Brendan Shanahan consistently ice a team that doesn't have a single chromosome of it, year in and year out.
It's hard to blame the refs when you get 5 powerplays and can't buy a goal. Anymore power plays and the Leafs would have been scored on short handed. Unless the Leafs play a team who are weakened by key injuries (Tampa Bay last year), they can't keep playing backup goalies against some of the best starting goalies in the League that are on the rosters of the top teams in their division. It's hard to blame a backup goalie for not being an elite starter. That's on the GM who put them in that position.
even then, Sammy has been arguably pretty damn functional this whole time!
@@themanformerlyknownascomme777 exactly why I can't hold these Leafs' goalies to blame, when a NHL backup is put into a sustained starter role, including into the playoffs. Samsonov would have made an outstanding backup for Toronto that can play 25-30 games, but in a division with such high calibre goaltending I'm always going to blame GMs for both throwing a backup to the wolves and then putting a weak blueline in front of them.

grabbing a player and tackling him to the ground , not calling it, having it happen again 15 seconds later, not calling it, having a spear/trip happen right after that, not calling it, leading straight into a goal IS NOT ACCEPTABLE, I don't care how many calls the bruins had against them at that point, call that bs!

For comparison to Matthews 18 power play goals, Sam Reinhart ended the season with 57 goals but 27 were from the Power Play & 5 were short handed. The man was incredible on special teams this season.
Leafs inability to get it out of the corners and maintain puck control is bigger than reffing. You watch Bertuzzi trip with blue eyes, he dove on it so they went with a no call. Got caught pushing the sell...drop the refs and jump on the bad team play, they are better on paper, but not the better team. Get that going through your system.

Bertuzzi would have won a gold in olympic diving with that, and had he not shown off his improv skills, chances are both players do get called for something. But Bert did his best to bait a call and it didn't go his way, and now Keefe is sounding like Berube in 2019; making stuff up to cover HIS ass and deflect the blame elsewhere. 7th in PIM and you think he can "get away" with stuff is comedy GOLD Also, Leafs got away with at least 2 blatantly obvious high sticks tonight. A few interferences, holds and crosschecks in there as well. 0-5 on the powerplay and Leaf fans are still acting like the refs are in cahoots against them 😂

Bottom line: neither of these teams are getting past the second. Difference is, in Boston, we fans can critically watch the team all season and understand this is a transition year where they’ve overperformed expectations. As far as Marchand and bertuzzi went, I mean, if you started calling on them they’d never have finished the game. The refs just let them go. The problem was the leaf’s goalie was enjoying the show and Freddy lofted one past him 😂
