  • I'm a US Navy veteran and have always had a bantering rivalry with my brothers and sisters in the US Coast Guard. With that said, they are badasses at what they do. I've seen it up close and personal. USCG rocks in my humble opinion.

    • Of course they do, but that doesn't stop each and every branch from talking crap to one another! It probably started a few years after one dude wanted to play on the water and another wanted to play on land when humans were still living in caves!

  • It used to be that the boaters I know deeply respected and appreciated the Coast Guard. They were considered heros, and people you were always happy to see. That appreciation seems to have become less common. The CG's focus has unceasingly shifted towards inspections and enforcement, and casual contact with boaters is increasingly viewed as a headache for boaters as the Coast Guard focuses on boardings and inspections, and seems to be searching for a reason to find something wrong. These days boaters I know hope to avoid an encounter with the Coast Guard. It's a shame.

    • Not from here.... I love boating and when it hits the fan.... they are still heros. I was "boarded' by the USCG 20 years ago an d they could not have been more professional. They really really tried NOT to give us a ticket but we were too stupid to take clue... we didn't have flares on our 16ft boat and the guy kept asking,,, this is 15 feet right? Duh... still only got a warning plus an education on the offshore requirements. Still very impressed by them.

  • A few facts about them that wasn't mentioned: Began as the "Cutter Service" under the US Treasury because the only income of the Continental Congress had was duties on shipments which led to smuggling. They have always had the Lifeboat Service which were double ended oar boats with a Coxswain and rowers. In a declared war they are placed under the DEPT. OF THE NAVY and accept duties as assigned. In WW2 they lost a greater percentage of people than all the other branches of the military during the conflict because they ran Convoy duties against the German Wolf Packs and became their first targets, as were the Destroyers but their ships were smaller and slower. Grand Haven Michigan has a Coast Guard Day because a cutter was torpedoed with all hands but one dying in the sinking. Every one of the crew was from that city. The Mackinaw, an Ice Breaker is stationed there. All of the Landing craft in the Normandy Invasion were operated by Coast Guard Coxswains or Navy Coxswains because they had so many of them. Sadly, during Viet Nam, when I served the USCG became under the Dept. of Transportation and began the Inspections of all vessels both great and small. Then came the War on Drugs. and the white cutters are used in that. They are still the ones to come to you in an emergency situation and always will. Now they are under Homeland Security and must work even if their pay is suspended by Congress. We still use the black cutters to service aids to navigation, including all Light Houses maned or automatic. I was one of them for four years of my life and never regretted serving. My dad served in WW2 at the age of 16 with his mother's permission in the USN on the USS Midway for 6 years and his brother was in the USA Signal Corp during Korea. Thanks to all of my Brothers and Sisters that served our Nation in it's need.

I wanted my family proud. I had fired the 22 caliber, M14 and the M16,next step was the M50 and the M60 which was not easy. I had 3 years ROTC training in high school so I knew what to do. My father made it mandatory, all my brothers and sisters, because he was a MEDIC during WW2. He wanted to make sure we had the physical and mental capacity in case rather we had to DEPLOY full gear with our M16,nothing has changed I am a Vietnam Veteran some 40 years ago. My son is a MARINE active service, he is a E-7.Gunne.

So, with that said, depending on how you look at it, TOTAL years, Navy is oldest but I don't feel that should count. Therefore, the CG is the OLDEST.
