  • This brought a tear to my eyes when I heard it. It reminded me of how happy I was when it first came out. I just turned 71 last October. The song is genius for so many reasons. When I listen to it, I remember the beautiful memories in the 70s that swirl around inside my head. It was a different time in a different life, I had come out several years before and somehow this piece of music rested me and gave me a place I could find some beauty. Oh, I wish I was there again.

    • That feeling will never go away for you, I'm 76 and I love this song More Than I loved it back then. I was just 28 when this was released, but I felt the depth of it, possibly because of all the literature I'd read. I considered myself more of a rocker then, but none of that mattered because of the lyrics the multi-instrumentation and above all, that yearning for all of us to meet a romantic stranger somewhere, fall deeply in love have a disintegrate and think of it for the rest of our lives. Yes, I thought of that at 28. I love this song now more than I did even then. And that's saying a lot.

  • When this tune debuted over American airwaves, I was employed as a chauffeur. On one particular night in early December, I drove a gorgeous young couple to a dinner engagement. I could tell they were very much in love. I asked them both, "Excuse me -- how about some music -- but, not Christmas music just yet?" They agreed. I tuned the car's radio to one of my favorite music stations and this magnificent tune started playing. I heard this tune a few hours before. The music was brand new to the couple seated behind me, but they reacted immediately to it. The lady cuddled up to her guy and they both smiled at me. "Great choice," the guy said. I can still play out that scenario over and over in my mind as we drove off into that snowy night in early December -- so long ago. I think I made their evening even more special. I love when that happens. Thank you, Maestro Al Stewart.

  • Lyrics: On a morning from a Bogart movie In a country where they turn back time You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre Contemplating a crime She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running Like a watercolor in the rain Don't bother asking for explanations She'll just tell you that she came In the year of the cat She doesn't give you time for questions As she locks up your arm in hers And you follow 'till your sense of which direction Completely disappears By the blue tiled walls near the market stalls There's a hidden door she leads you to These days, she says, I feel my life Just like a river running through The year of the cat While she looks at you so cooly And her eyes shine like the moon in the sea She comes in incense and patchouli So you take her, to find what's waiting inside The year of the cat Well morning comes and you're still with her And the bus and the tourists are gone And you've thrown away your choice you've lost your ticket So you have to stay on But the drum-beat strains of the night remain In the rhythm of the newborn day You know sometime you're bound to leave her But for now you're going to stay In the year of the cat Year of the cat

My daddy took me to Spring Valley California, and left me----( no money, no school supplies, not support, no nothing, humiliated and embarrassed so horrible, that I still get sick at my stomach thinking about is)---- at the age of 14 yrs. old. Alone in California, with nothing but letters and pictures from my first true love, that had joined the Air Force. I turned 15, 3 months later, and IF it wasn't for my Aunt Sonja Garten, and Uncle Steve Garten and 8 track tapes I got by sending in some silly AD with a penny that said " GET THESE FREE 8 TRACK TAPES FOR ONE CENT”----- Al Stewart, Year of the Cat, Boz Scaggs, Steve Miller Band, Boston, Foreigner, Eagles, and too many artists to name, but the best of all Fleetwood Mac-Rumors, which, I heard while babysitting for a single woman with shag carpet and a silver Corvette! THIS music and advertisers that had ads --like " GET THESE FREE 8 TRACK TAPES FOR ONE CENT” kept me from running head-on into the tides of the Pacific Ocean- Ocean-beach, California, back in 1977. I still praise the Lord for those corny lifesaving ads. Now at 54 years old, 55 next month, I feel it was the Lord that I accepted as a 7 year old-that saved me from the tides, I praise my Lord Jesus Christ for saving me, and my Aunt Sonja Garten and Uncle Steve Garten, for loving me unconditionally to this very day!!!!

  • This song is a masterpiece in a class of its own and has accompanied me for a lifetime since 1976 until today. When I hear it today at the age of 76, memories of times long past come up, good ones and also melancholy ones. He was a loyal and special companion in my numerous holidays in the south of France while gliding. Whenever I drove back to my hotel in the evening after a great flight from the airport, I played it in the car. The road ran through a forest full of oaks and was very winding for 5 kilometers. I turned the radio on full and drove to the limit. The feeling was like flying in the universe, I was dazed by this music like after a nice shot of Koke. At the end of the song I stood in front of the hotel and got out happily, ready for dinner with my wife. What more does it take to be happy?

  • God! This beautiful song. I wish I had discovered it sooner in my life. These 70s musicians were on something else. From Todd Lundgren, Cat Stevens, The Isley brothers, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Womack and Womack, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Carol King,Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, Elton John,Neil Young... etc, had a revolutionary take on music that seemed experimental as a way to shift from the 60s music. Lucky are those who were old enough to enjoy this musical era.

THEN I was curious about the origins of the song itself so i looked it up. it pays homage to Casa Blanca and the Vietnamese zodiac.... which...coincidentally.... the year of the cat falls on 2023.

  • My god what a great song. Released in 1976 and people are seeking it out and commenting 40 years later! Timeless Classic, Mr. Stewart. Al Stewart is actively touring and playing small venues. The tickets can be had very affordably. I shouldn't tell you this because you might buy the ticket I wanted. He's 71 years old and can still shred. During his show he talks to the audience and tells some amusing and clever anecdotes between songs. Talks about meeting Jagger, seeing Hendrix play when he was 20. Make your life a little better and make it to one of his shows. He is a living legend. So you have to drive 100 or 200 miles to attend. Make a romantic mini-vacation out of it. You. will. be. glad. you. did. Get out of the house and experience something.

    • I could not agree with you more!!!! It brings tears to my eyes when listening to beautiful instrumentals such as by Al Stewart, etc, etc. I look back with great fondness of my life thru the 70s, 80s and 90s. Music always played a vital part. Listening to the radio or watching great groups perform on American Bandstand, Soul Train, Midnight Special, etc. I am forever thankful. Love and thanks to my mother. Dec 1979, I will never forget sitting at our kitchen window, gazing out wondering if music will be as great as it was during the 70s for the upcoming within a few days 1980. The growing up in the 70s will always be heartfelt fondess.

    • Me too. So many greats, all brought good and/or emotional feelings. I love that feeling today. I can remember our front room record player!

    • Truly a golden age of popular music. Even a lot of the bad songs were catchy.
