Finally covering the lights I use for wedding receptions. The Godox ML30Bi and ML60Bi lights are an incredible, low cost way to level up your wedding receptions. I've always been upset with the quality of my reception footage and that was due to bad lighting.

Totally messed up. The lights range from 2800 Kelvin to 6500 Kelvin. They also don’t come with the remote but I’d recommend the Godox app over the remote anyways. 😅
Yes. Usually they stay around 2-3 percent. During first dances, toasts, and grand entrance we have them brighter around 50-60 percent.

Great stuff dude! That would drive me nuts with the app situation. That's why I used the LS-60x lights and a couple 300x's. All my scenes are set and ready to go in the app and I haven't had any issues on the day with connection.

Hey, great videos! Looks like you use the reflector and no barn doors attachment which I see other wedding videographers go for. Any drawbacks to this? Do the reflectors cause any noticeable hotspots in any of the footage?

Can you do a video on collaborating with vendors such as wedding coordinators, DJs, photographers, ect… In all your videos you are really successful at controlling your environment and going that extra yard in production. As a Videogrpaher I personally experience territorial vendors… so I’d love to hear your approach in-depth on collaboration. Love the videos dude

(sparkler send off) I would love to see that killer Gimbal setup that you have there. It looks awesome. I do see you have a few things mounted attachment with your gimbal... including the small Aputure light like mine. I would love to see your wedding gimbal setup in detail for some ideas.
I was actually planning to make one. I’ve changed it from using the crane 3S (old gimbal setul on the channel) to the RS3. I plan to go over it.

amazing lighting kit!! wow...I have a couple of LED panels but I'm thinking about getting one or two of the ML...I know the 60bi is more powerful...a lot more powerful? The guests don't mind that much lighting on? I know you control the lights a lot..some of your shots are straight out of a movie for sure. Which camera? I have a Sony FX30 and a Canon C100 mk2

sorry to bother you...does the light output of ML60 bi light remains the same whether you use AC or batteries? I want to make sure that the light doesn't dim when going from AC to batteries. Sometimes I don't get access to AC power. Have you ever compared the light output? Thanks for any info

Hi Justin. You're a great inspiration!. I am interested in getting 2 of the 60's and 2 30's. Do you ever felt you had the need to get lights that have more power like those 200w and above? I know KZheadrs always say the more the better but in practice not sure if higher power lights could blind the guests or make them uncomfortable? I'm just stating in videography and for sure need lights. These look interesting and wondering if they are enough 2x2. Started listening to your podcasts. Thanks for the inspiration.
hi there...great footage...lighting is the most important factor for sure...does the Godox ML60 bi provide the same light output whether you use AC or battery? I think some COB lights dim a bit when using battery in comparison to using them plugged into AC... I don't always get access to AC power when needed, but I want to make sure I still get the most power out of the light (even if the battery won't last long but I have lots of large capacity sony batteries)...have you tried the ML60bi with both AC and with battery? The light keeps the same output no matter what? just wondering.. thanks
Hey Justin, i know this is an older video but a question i have is : when using your off camera lights, do you ever get any complaints about your lights changing the mood of the venue? Example: introducing the bright light into a dimly lite, mood lit room?

I have few questions as I want to understand how to light the vanue for both photo & video. 1. Can i get the same results with the godox sl60w and sl100. Or is there a difference with ml60 in terms of light quality softness and stuff.? 2. I can see that during reception you didnot use any diffusion infront of the lights... And still the results look beautiful... Is it because the lights were placed far and thats why diffusion wasnt needed? Everyone always says diffused lights are good but then again why in weddings and reception we can get away with not diffusing the light? I am new to photography & videography and these questions are bugging me... Btw its was a great video.
Once I set the light, I just press the DIM button to turn it off and on instead of the power button. That way, it will not reset to the default setting and I don't have to reconnect whenever I turn the light on and off.
I do the exact same. I turn them on and connect them close to the beginning of the reception and they stay connected until the end 🙌🏾

Hi Justin, How you managed to get the light stands to go so high and how the you get the base plates?
Lighting really does make a huge difference. Everything just seems flat when you don't at least try to control the lighting. I bought the Light Storm 60x and it's a great light but it's definitely heavier and I worry about it getting knocked down on a light stand. So I may supplement it with the 30s you reviewed here. How tall do your light stands go?
It really does. I should of out more side by side lights from when I didn’t use them to now. That’s why I love the Godox ones. They are crazy tiny yet just as powerful. I use impact air cushioned light stands that are 13 feet.
Thx for sharing. I’ve been wanting something small for sunset style portions of the wedding. Have you ever used these during that time for outdoors?
No problem at all. I’ve never used them for sunset but I do use 4 for the sendoffs. Really helps bring the exposure up a lot. I have used them during ceremonies too to bring up the foreground exposure.
Hi Justin, just bought two ML60bi thanks to your video 😄 may i know if you’re using the reflector on the light for your wedding or are you just using it bare? And what percentage of power are you using for the different scenarios?
Hey! That’s so awesome! You’ll love using them. I use the reflector on the lights and run them around 2-5% during the dancing. For toasts, first dances, and grand entrance I use them around 80%
Hello! It's me again. :) Love the insight. Any chance you could do a BTS of setting up the lights, and how you move them around during the night? (If you got any weddings planned that allows for BTS). Would help a ton! I've only invested in two Aputure studio lights (Light Storm 60X and Amaran 100x). Seems like big work having to move them around :D Btw; How tall is your light stands? They look extremely tall.
Hey. I really need to do that. Like now lol. So the stands I use are impact air cushioned 13 foot light stands. Usually I keep them on the dance floor the entire evening and only moving for cake cutting if I need to.

This is good work right here. I do have a question when you start your set up of lighting the reception and the placement of the lights. What do you take into consideration? Thank you.
Thanks so much! Typically I always try to focus on the dance floor first. Then I use any extras to fill in the back walls or distant areas to raise the room ambience. The biggest thing to making it look really good is turning off all indoor lights. This helps create shadows and get that extra “cinematic” feel lol. Not sure if this answered it but if you have any other specific questions I’m happy to answer those too.

Hey yes it is. I actually do this now myself. There’s a cable you have to order but it works. Search Godox ml60 dtap - dc cable

Hey. Yes I still recommend these as they have held up with no issues and they updated the app which makes it 10 times better haha. A cheaper alternative are the amaran 60x. Similar output and form factor but about 40$ cheaper 🥹

Great review man. How do you think they compare to the new Aperture amaran 60x lights
So I worked with a guy who had one. Honest opinion is they are almost identical. The Godox are about 150$ cheaper but that does come with the annoyance of bad remotes/quirky apps lol. The Godox are so much smaller too compare to the 60X

At max you’ll get maybe an hour and a half. I’d recommend using a dc-dtap cable and a v mount for longer lasting options

Thanks so much for watching! The flat base light stands I made using an umbrella stand base from Home Depot. Costs about 45$. Then I just inserted my light stand into it. 🙌🏾

You could use it for photography. I like constant light over flash myself

The 60x is honestly a really great buy. I believe it came out just after the Godox but at the price they are it’s definitely worth it. Even offers v mount powered options too.

I just use the reflectors. I use between 4-8 though so the light is spread pretty even in the room.
Any way to make that dome fit a Bowens adapter? My lights from GVM are all Bowens

Hey Justin! Do you ever light the bride and groom during the ceremony? I'm filming a ceremony with a bride and groom in a dimly lit room against a window with a waterfront view, and don't want to blow out the window. What would you do in that situation? Also, gear-wise, why do you prefer the Godox over the Amaran 60x? Thanks man!
Hey. Yes I have done that if we are able to mount them. The 60x are actually on my wishlist haha. The Godox lights came out before the Amaran lights.

It's possible. I do that now ironically lol. I use a dtap to dc cable and mount the v mount using a vmount lightstand clamp.
Entire wedding reception with just 2 npf batteries, really? How many hours is that and at what brightness do you use each?

I use just the reflector. During the send off I use my assistant and he holds a light stand behind us with a little Godox softbox gel that comes with the kit. That’s the only time. Or in bridal suites.

Do you ever modify these to spotlight people doing speeches or the first dance? Or is the angle of spread plenty fine as is?
I prefer the spread. The big thing is if it’s too dark in the venue, you have to raise the house lights. I try to reduce the need to do that since most of the interior lighting is horrible. Have to preserve them skin tones lol.

I wanted to be able to run bowen's mount with the battery plate, so I retrofitted the AD300/AD400 adapters to fit the ML30/ML60. kzhead.info/sun/oq2rZ5aOaplsn2g/bejne.html I've even got a new video in the works on how to make a custom godox mount to bowens adapter
Have you tried using these lights during sunset/sunrise? Can the power hold up while in the sun 🤔 lol sorry I'm not very technical.
Oh definitely not that powerful. You’d want 600x or 300x. These are perfect for indoor applications though. If there’s enough sunlight coming through they help a lot with the shadows or dark spots.

Technically yes you can. You’ll have to find a dtap to v mount cable but it’s possible. It’s just not an included option right out the box.

Does the battery plate charge the batteries or do you need an external charger?
It doesn’t charge them unfortunately. Would be a cool feature but you’ll need an external charger for the NPF batteries.

The Sony NPF batteries I use a power extra 4 bay charger I got off Amazon. It was about 35)

Do you ask the couples ahead of time if they want video lighting? I’m considering adding lighting to my wedding videos, but honestly, I feel like some couples and DJs will not appreciate this.
I’ve never asked but I also light it to look good in the room. As long as you do so and it looks good, no one will question it. Bicolor lights are what you want for sure.
@@JustinPorterMedia Excellent. I’ve considered asking on the fork I send couples after they sign their contract, but I think it’s easier to ask forgiveness than permission, especially if it looks good like you mentioned.

@@ryanthompson4846 yea I wouldn’t do that. It’s still not as common in the industry to take lights, or in my case 8, but I’d do it, make it look good and they will assume it’s part of the venue haha.

I think it does help for sure that the lights you mention here all look like they could be part of the way the venue or the DJ set up the room (rather than LED panels or Aputure 1200ds or whatever that are super obviously “video”). I think with the smaller lights, everyone will be thinking that someone else brought them lol.

Yes without a doubt. I say 2 minimum so you can help with shadows but starting with one is better than none haha

You run 7 lights?? What if you can’t afford all 7 at the moment lol which ones would you go for first? 3 of them?
Haha well not every wedding do I use all of them. Typically, I always use 4 ML60Bi’s during the reception. Depending on the layout and ambience in the room, I’ll add more. If you can atleast grab 2 ML60bi you’ll be in a good spot. Then add to them over time.
How many hrs for 100% power?
100% power won’t go very long. Maybe 2 hours but at a wedding you’d never have a need to run them that high for that long. You can create a d tap cable and route a vmount to the stand if you want to have longer battery life though.

Yep. I have 4 60s and 4 30s. I’d recommend the amaran 60x though.

The largest crew I’ve had was 5. Usually it’s 3 though for the most part.

Ml60 vs Ml30?
Have both. I use the ml 60s for the dance floor and the 30s for the guests. This way during toasts I can control all lighting.
