  • Eric 'winkle' Brown (RIP). Guinness World Record holder for the most planes flown by one man EVER! and that didn't include derivatives of the same aircraft. If it flew between '39 and '70, you could bet he'd flown it. Also holds (or at least held, not sure which) the record for the most carrier landings. A personal hero of mine, what a bloody legend !

  • Didn't Brown say one of his all time favorite aircraft was the Mossies replacement the single seat Hornet.

  • @20:10 - Thank you for this comment! I've nevet known about the tail being offset in prop planes. How much in--say--a Piper Cub?

    @stevenbrucci@stevenbrucci10 күн бұрын
    • First, your answer, but then a clarification. The angle is very, very small (about 1 degree is typical), so small that you would have to measure accurately to see it. It is not evident to a casual visual inspection. Now for the clarification. I do not believe that the commentator was exactly accurate in his statement that it was set at an angle to counteract torque at takeoff. That angle would have to be extreme, and this would cause excessive drag trim at cruise. For takeoff, left rudder is used to counteract torque. The real reason for the offset is that without this, the plane would have a tendency to turn left (assuming the engine turned clockwise, which is by far the most common direction). There are several factors that make that happen, but the rudder is slightly offset to provide just enough steerage to counteract those forces at cruise. Very powerful planes like the Corsair would have much more, but once again, even in this plane, the rudder trim tab was used to counteract the takeoff torque. The angle for the Corsair is set more for to counteract the turning tendency at cruise than at takeoff. generalaviationnews.com/2022/01/26/it-takes-a-crooked-tail-to-fly-a-straight-line/#:~:text=Control%20inputs%20can%20negate%20the,of%20flight%20to%20the%20left.

  • Could refuelling cables be used to tow fighters? So the fighters could re-engage after a sortie?

    @Ubique2927@Ubique29277 күн бұрын
    • No, both are actually designed in a way to snap if the force gets to great. And towing planes at higher speeds isnt a good idea at all.

  • Australia never operated the Helldiver. It was rejected during early evaluation in the U.S. of the land based version, due to its numerous faults, in favour of the Vultee Vengeance, and although one was painted in Australian markings, (and photographed by Curtiss for promotional purposes), none were ever delivered to the Royal Australian Air Force. Ordered into production from the drawing board, so much money had already been spent on setting up production, that it wasn't politically expedient for the type to be withdrawn from production, hence the continual mountain of modifications that never really solved all the problems, and earned it the scornful nicknames that it truly deserved.

    • I think Brown died just too early for his Knighthood to be confirmed; it was being considered but officialdom always dithers. In answer to another query here - Brown indeed holds the record for the most deck landings; a feat not likely to be broken now.

  • Excuse me? The Martin B-10 surely. Is anyone else getting tired of the parasitic Boeing intellectual property lawyers claiming everything the Boeing company has bought, the Boeing P-51, the Boeing B-25, the Boeing F-86, the Boeing F-100? Some respect please for the North American Aviation engineers (not lawyers) who designed these great aircraft.
