My family on my mother's side lived in Sudetenland on a farm during this time. My Grandfather built the first hydroelectric dam in Czechoslovakia and they had a large house on a medium sized farm. The Germans who were a majority in that area all believed in Hitler's propaganda of "a greater German state" they were all out on the roads waving the swastika flags that had been provided. The occupation leaders soon began to issue ultimatums. They took one half of the crops in the fields and there after. Then they conscripted all the boys fifteen and older. My uncle Karl was marched off and went into Russia after the invasion there began. He was assigned to a cooking unit and later was shot in his posterior and had to walk back with the bullet still in him. The family all moved to southern Germany when the communist forces came into the Sudetenland. When I was born I had an unusual birthmark on my posterior so I was named after my Uncle.
