  • For those who are confused, normally in tennis when the ball hit the top of the net and still lands on court during the serve, the serve is called “let” and is replayed. In this tournament, lets are played, meaning they don’t replayed, they counted as normal points When Nick served this, the serve was let, Novak thought this would be replayed and returned the ball jokingly, Nick then played and won the point. Edit: Lets are not fault, Thanks!

That's what Djokovic was expecting, and why he didn't really try to return the ball. If the ball hits the top of the net during a rally (a "net-cord"), it is played like any other shot. So, basically, to save time, they were treating lets like net-cords -- although, apparently, no one told that to Djokovic. Djoke's on him! (Sorry, couldn't resist. 😎)

  • This is called the 'no let rule' and it exists in the rules of the game of tennis, but tournaments may choose to apply it or not in the same way that they can apply different scoring formats. While we see various scoring formats more frequently, it's rare to have the 'no let rule' on tournaments where the top players participate, so it's not unlikely that it can slip their minds. Anyway, according to the 'no let rule' if the ball after a serve touches the tape of the net and lands in the correct service box, it is considered to be in play and the receiving player loses the point if the ball gets in contact with any part of their body. But Novak took it like a good sport. 😄

    @chetanphoenix@chetanphoenix Жыл бұрын

    • A let is when the serviced ball touches the net but still lands in the legal zone, in the normal rules that service is replayed. Apparently in this game the let rule isn’t enforced and the ball is still live.

      @adrianpilbrow@adrianpilbrow Жыл бұрын
    • Yep. A "let" can happen for a number of reasons. It's just an abbreviation for "do- over". A let is called most commonly when a serve hits the top of the net and then falls into the opponent's service court. But it can also be called if a ball rolls onto the court from an adjacent court, or if a bird lands on the court in the middle of play, or in some other situation in which the empire feels the point should be re-played. All would be called a "let," and the point would be re-played.
