Bringing back the grounded, psychological horror of the original 1976 film gives nervy Margaret’s sudden visions of devil claws and mysterious bestial rites a useful ambiguity - is she relapsing into mental instability, as Sonia Braga’s shrewd abbess insists? But when disgraced Father Brennan (a dogged Ralph Ineson) reveals a Catholic sect’s plan to breed the Antichrist from an orphan, the film unleashes a set of rope-swinging, pole-flying callbacks to The Omen that ramp up the film from arty restraint to burgeoning body horror.
I think 1976’s The Omen is great. Rewatching it a couple months ago, it still holds up quite well. With this movie, I think I’ll wait until it hits streaming. I’m already seeing a lot of movies in theaters this month, which means one I’m not as looking forward to has to wait for a couple of months. After this review though, this movie has more of my attention.
Maybe this and immaculate are like Bugs Life and Ants lol. Who really had the original idea haha
Tornado and Twister and that other one!
It’s funny because the movies on paper are very similar but when it comes to the story, they are polar opposites
So glad to hear The First Omen is worthwhile. I love the first two Omen movies, was a bit disappointed with the third, hated the fourth, and felt the remake was unnecessary. You can say I've been waiting for a good Omen movie since 1978! Funny how we got two nun movies so close together. Kind of like the werewolf films of 1981(The Howling/Wolfen/An American Werewolf in London), Dante's Peak/Volcano, Deep ImpactArmageddon, and Deep Star Six/Leviathan/The Abyss.
Dude I cant tell you enough how good this movie was. Go see it!!!
Doesn’t really sound like my kinda thing. I find it funny how this and Monkey Man have eerily similar posters tho 😂
I made an April watchlist and them right next to each other looks hilarious
@@nicholasonciul5770 lmaoo 🤣
I was just thinking about it😂
Look at the Omen 1976 poster.
I was named after the Antichrist from the original Omen movie lol
John 3:16
Stay away from me lmfao
You do know the ONLY verse in the bible that names the antichrist is revelation "9:11"....when you call "9-11" you're calling for Satan..
@@PoopilussMcDoopiluss lol
Wow, this is a huge surprise
I'm lds and just got out. Loved it. Impeccable horror imo.
I actually watched this movie before watching this review, and I had never heard of the omen franchise before so I thought this was an original movie not tied to an IP. Once the movie ended I wondered if the movie would be successful enough to make sequels because I wanted to see what happened, now I know I just need to watch the original movies😂😂😂
That was my friend and I 🤣. We walked out of theatre like “dang they should really make a sequel on what happens with that Damien kid” ☠️
They will make sequels I won't like such as over explanation on jackal and more that ruin timeline more. Margaret is only character in whole serries I like so I'll watch anyway
I was always of the mind Damian was born of a Jackel?? Interesting. Anyway, Surprisingly I’ve always enjoyed the Omen trilogy. Yes the sequels are not as revered as the first but as a complete trilogy it works quite well. Much like the exorcist it’s full of incredibly grim and dark themes and scenes. Their still very much a story of good pulling through great evil
That’s the way it’s supposed to be. They literally say it and found a jackal in the grave of Damien’s mother.
@@AriannaGi I saw the new movie so thanks for trying to spoil it. The mother isn’t dead and there’s a reason Brennan tells Thorn is and that she was a jackal.
@@DericMyersYT I wasnt trying to spoil it I'm sorry I literally saw it last night and I like to listen to reviews after I see a movie 😅 I listened to a couple that were just 100 precent spoiler filled I didn't realize this wasn't one of them.
@@AriannaGi Oh my God. I sound like such a jerk. My apologies. No worries though.
this film was CREEPY AF😮 JUST DON'T EAT 😮 there's some scenes that was just grotesque🙃 🤢 iht...... "the first omen" is 💯 better then " immaculate "
I'm really looking forward to seeing this on Saturday. I am wondering, though, being that it's a prequel to a franchise, where do they go if this is highly successful? Do they do another remake? More prequels/sidequels? Or expand the lore in other ways?
Keep expanding lore. Jackal for one which I don't care on and then maybe Damien sister. If really lucky maybe we get perspective from house scianna
@@AshePBlack Looks like it wasn't all that successful after all and I don't think it will get any sequels, but I really enjoyed it.
Maybe eventually, good review
Glad it didn’t turn out like last year’s The Exorcist: Believer.
Hmm I'll give it a try
How's 3 Body Problem? Did you watch it?
That’s good to hear it’s good
11:01 if it was lean into priestheavy aspect of it, would that be your kind a thing? leans on that a lot in exorcism.
As a devout Catholic, I thought this movie was super well done and not only didn't attack the church and the faithful, but completely adhered to what is taught about human corruption. Also knowing some Latin, there were some really clever music choices and eerie Latin mutterings in the sound mixing. This and Midnight Mass on Netflix are perfect for a religious movie nerd like me!!!
can't wait... loved The Omen and Damien Omen 2.... thought Final Conflict was horrible
Let me guess, so anticlimactic that they didn't mention Damien in movie 4 until end. Like hey remember the time a bunch of babies were killed, world didn't almost end, and by the way.... Sorry for sarcasm but my point still stands
Damiens mother was a jacket was it not?
Yes
In the original movie, Father Brannen tells Robert Thorn Damien was born from a jackal. Yes.
your right, and Damian has a twin sister???
So they changed him being born from a jackal?
i mean you are right what happened to the jackal, and now he has a twin sister???
Awww they toned down the creepiness, no fun!
So it’s a reboot?
@@mdandy67 the demon at the end looked like a jackal
The possession scene was amazing great film
Do I need to see the original Omen or the more new one first?
You don't need to watch anything. This is a prequel to the first film from 1976.
Try #1 then 2, then this new one Will add to the story
Father Brennen is in this, what about Father Spilitto, Mrs Baylock and Bugenhagen?
Spiletto is but it’s just a blink and you’ll miss it cameo
Only thing I didn't get was how you they made the humans, More evil than the actual demon which was either brilliant or weird. I don't know how to explain it
I'm going to name my kid Damien. 😂 One day maybe.
Nah bruh
Point of Reference: I’m not a huge fan of The Omen. I think the high events are great but everything in between is a little boring. I think it’s an ok film and that’s it. I love the idea of the film more than i do the film itself. I’ve seen the second one and didn’t like it. I did not see Immaculate and i’ve heard similarities. Going into this year I didn’t even know this movie would be coming out and, when I did hear about it, it was not on my radar to watch at all. The trailer which had people going in reverse intrigued me. I just wanted something creepy to watch so I went and saw it. I seem to think more highly about The First Omen than most. I also heard about the NC-17 stuff and i’m not shocked. The horror in this movie is very different than most Paranormal Films. The best way I can describe it is it itches a part of your brain you didn’t know could be scared or uncomfortable. I do not get scared anymore with movies. This was frightening in more of a “WTF did i just watch” type of way. I had someone ask if it was Terrifier level of gore and I said no but in the few gory scenes that really make you go WTF. It does have the character development in between the creaky scenes but not near as much as the original which imo makes it better. It does not have many, what I call, Final Destination type of Deaths but I believe that is because the antichrist isn’t born yet so he doesn’t subconsciously make those kills. The main actress in this was marvelous. I loved this movie overall. I had it as one of my top 10 movies so far since 2020. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes paranormal horror or demonic type of horror. I honestly gave it a 9.5/10 off the bat but could lower it to a 9/10 on rewatch. I know most won’t agree but I just really enjoyed it. UPDATE: Go see this in Dolby Cinema, IMAX, or something with great surround sound so you can hear the little things.
Honestly I didn’t know how this film was going to be received because at least for me personally, I only saw the first trailer they put out for The First Omen and my thought was that this was going to end up like Madame Web where as it got close to the release date there was no second trailer. But now even as someone whose never seen the original film I do want to see The First Omen.
Watch the original. I saw it with my pops when I was younger and i ended up watching the sequels on my own
This one was pretty good. I didn't expect much from it but I enjoyed it. I'd watch a sequel to it.
Which is better Immaculate or The First Omen? Scare level
First Omen 100% Immaculate was a cheap cash grab. First Omen is a modern masterpiece
@@PoopilussMcDoopiluss 100% AGREED
2nd omen great too...
The first great omen sequel !!
And here i thought that it would be just another disposable Prequel/, sequel/remake to a classic!
That third act was a bit of a snoozefest for me. I’m glad you enjoyed it!!! 🔥🔥🔥
It's an actual prequel? There are elements that are in the original. Weird.
Spoiler in regards to what he said about the sequel baiting ending: I didn’t like it at first because we know it doesn’t pay off because those three characters never come up in the Omen trilogy…. BUT this is about twenty years timeline wise between Damien: Omen II and The Final Conflict. Soooooooooo they could potentially continue the franchise with entries that take place in that time period.
Decent last thirdl but holy moly the first 2/3 is a schloggg to get through
Looks like Bombed in box office ...NONE beats the legendary wit ;legendary cast in 70s was well done & was epic f** all these
Yeah it's underperforming. But it's still a good movie and the best in the series since the original
Movie is a C+
Two of the same movies come out around the same time? Nahhhhh. Wait ur right, it happens. 😮 1997 - Dante's Peak/Volcano 1998 - Deep Impact/Armageddon 1998 - ANTZ/A Bug's Life 1999 - Mission to Mars/Red Planet 1999 - Stir of Echoes/The Sixth Sense 2006 - The Prestige/The Illusionist
2013 - white house down/Olympus has fallen
last year's the nun ii and sister death were very similar as well
2017 - Dunkirk/Darkest Hour
Unpopular opinion but The Omen (1976) is the best movie by Richard Donnor.
Can’t get behind this one! They had to change the birth of Damien from a jackal to a nun! The only thing good about it is the gore/body horror.
The beast at the end of the movie was a jackal
Movies don't attack The Catholic Church! The people who say they do are full of it
The Jesuits rule the western world...
SPOILERS I thought the ending was very confusing. Wasn’t Damien in the original Omen born from a jackal? And now he is born from a nun. Like how does that work lol
Am i the only one who find it very slow paced ? It was scary and had some really disturbing scenes... but i find it a little too slow tbh. Not saying its a bad movie , just a little tòo slow for my liking i guess.
So watch the Omen first then watch the First Omen. Wait what.
Spoilers: You know what made no sense. Margret not knowing she has the 666 symbol on her head. Does she not wash/lather her hair with shampoo?
Same thing happened to Damien in Omen 2. How did he or anybody that washed him when he was younger not notice the 666 in his hair lol
Loved movie, not bothered by so called changes or retcons from original cuz yes they can be explained away. What ruined for me was timeline continuity. Movie 3 where Damien is 32 the year is 1971. The thing is when I watch movies like if the are reboot prequel sequel remake whatever I listen to directors not fans to see what's cannon. Being this movie is called prequel and would have been believable yes timelines and issue. Since this movie was newest they needed to count backwards more years. However a remake/ reboot where it's all same except they push Damien trilogy further into future could work fine. Why? Because even in 2024 a person like Damien could be voted into politics politics never changes no matter the year. Like first omen needed to be set in certain era but I'm not so sure the year drove story in rest of movies. For example in first omen they had protests about stuff at that time and church wanted to make antichrist to lead ppl back out of fear. If Damien story was set in 2000s or a lil less the motive would be bad church wants to make antichrist to bring ppl back to church and they'd be against woke church. That's like only diff and if omen quoted Bible, last generation was supposed to be worse than Noah's day. That doesn't seem like 70s. Plus in movie Damien died it was so anticlimactic they didn't mention Damien was Delia dad till end of movie 4
I re-watched "The Omen" recently, after many years, and my interpretation was completely different to what I thought in the 70's. Originally I viewed the film as being a supernatural movie, about a family that realized their child was the anti-christ. But this time, I saw it as being about people "believing" the child was the anti-christ, treating him as such, with no evidence. Just fanatical beliefs that have tragic consequences.
He literally finds the birthmark of satan on the kids head lmfao
Being a Catholic I had no problems with this film but Immaculate is absolute blasphemy
