  • I don't think people really understand....this is legitimately god-tier Planet Coaster skill. If you don't play the game, you have NO idea how unbelievably difficult and time-consuming making something like this would be. Like, I can barely comprehend how this was even made! It's absolutely incredible, it could truly be a ride in real life, that's how detailed it is.

    • That's what's so impressive. It's not just technically brilliant as a construction, the "directing" of the ride experience is what really turns it into something world class. It feels immersive, and manages to convey a sense of suspense and horror. And even more surprising - it's not just scene-for-scene recreations of the movie, but the story told is the one that best suits a coaster - while still distinctly being Aliens.

  • Best theme park ride ever, and it doesn't even exist. Near perfection. 0:38 Coaster speed timed to perfection for the music as the door opens. Using the original soundtrack rather than a mix is good in an IP that is defined better by its general tone than by specific cliches. Windows to the "outside" in this first room are great for tricking the brain into thinking this isn't a darkride but a location. The angled walls and raised floor also add to this effect. Appropriate use of the space dudes at a distance where they aren't too recognisable. 0:51 The panel top-left is a great bit of set dressing to make this more than just a corridor. 0:55 Light-up sequence with synced audio and angling the track upward gives the clear message of "here we go!", both in terms of a space launch and a rollercoaster. 1:09 Again we're seeing the "outside" from inside, camoflaging the nature of the ride. Subtle lighting to pick out shapes outside too. The "Gate 810" sign is just enough subtle storytelling that we need to know we're departing this station. 1:23 The monorails are fantastic for making the station feel alive. 1:32 Video screen on the left changes, like a traffic light to signify you're going somehwere. 1:40 Confirmed in dialogue, and the panels lift out of your way for a dramatic reveal of the destination. 1:49 I like how the tunnel "powers up" here bit by bit, again with appropriate sfx. The notion that this is functioning machinery is sold totally. The "express elevator to hell" line is also perfect for a coaster. 2:00 The big distant image trick is pulled off really well, and again like a lot of things with this ride is nice and subtle. 2:16 Genius trick for doing the re-entry on the dark side of the planet. 2:19 Re-entry effects again have the music syncing up perfectly. 2:29 IMO the best effect of the ride, and that's saying something. Synced sfx again. Hinting at the hazards ahead too. 2:58 The angling for the reveal is fantastic from facing forwards. Also jesus christ what a gargantuan creation. The sense of scale here is incredible. Rather than rush down I like that it's slower with some dialogue and music instead. The slowness also gives you time to realise the scale change when entering the door. 3:45 No music. Just sfx for immersion now. Slow movement like walking. 3:48 It's been quite some time since I've seen Aliens, but I instantly knew where I was in this corridor, with Newt hiding under one of those grills. The attention to matching the environments really pays off here. And again the fact there's clearly stuff above and below the corridor breaks the feeling that it's just a box environment on a darkride. 4:05 The rats cast in silhouette by the red light is way better than just seeing them. Much more ominous. 4:10 The use of the scanner blips combined with coaster speed here is genius - turning what would otherwise be a fairly generic scifi corridor into a tense piece of horror. The lights are set up well though to be at just that point where it's bright enough that you can see, but not bright enough to be sure if you're actually seeing movement or imagining it because of the rotating light source. 4:23 I'd really love to know how you made that growl sound have a seemingly perfect echo match for this tunnel. 4:31 Red and yellow. The colours of danger. Using the movie's pallete to great effect. Also going from a growl to mechanical noises implies you imagined the growl - clever horror misdirection. 4:43 & 5:05 Music sting upon seeing that something is VERY wrong with this location. The transition between corridor and goopy cave is really seamless too. Again with colour, goop + green = toxic. Makes you completely forget that those decorations were originally cake icing. The dripping bits are just enough to show movement and stop it feeling like a statue. 5:18 Stepping up the suspense seeing the clearly biological structure ahead. The rotating red light also makes it feel like it's moving. Scanner noises come back and anyone who has ever seen any horror movie knows the 2nd creepy time isn't a red herring. The ride is moving so slowly and yet there's so much storytelling going on in just the lighting, sfx and music, it's incredible. 5:42 Didn't go overboard with the skeletons. The subtleties of this ride really help. 5:51 Growling red maw. Entering the mouth of hell. Oh god. THEYRE STILL ALIVE IN THERE. SHIT. SHIT. AND THE BEEPING IS STILL GOING! Dude, this right here is horror done 100% RIGHT. 5:58 Chestbuster! Shame it's a little hard to pick up on. 6:04 Black and silent for the big reveal. Unfortunately this is one bit that falls flat. The video clip is more funny than scary. It would probably help if the xenomorph audio had more bass and the video was closer to the ride. The idea in itself is fine though, it works well later on. 6:06 Instantly redeemed with the fantastic xenomorph sculptures positioned in a way where the ride's movement looks like they're running towards you. Fitting "ruuuunnn!" music. 6:15 The way the track curves as if running and dodging past aliens gives a good effect. 6:19 And here the video pays off. So subtle and so fleeting, yet really impactful! 6:23 The twists and turns after the orange video through a couple of different environments give the feeling of getting lots of ground between you and them. 6:36 This video trick is even better than the last. At least I assume it's a video trick. I genuinely don't know. 6:42 Nice homage to the film with the gun turret and the screen showing the ammo going down. It will buy some time, but not long. 6:49 Appropriate claustrophobia 7:01 The pacing here is fantastic. Great horror and great action both need room for breathers between set pieces, and this segment does that really well by giving a little bit more eye candy. 7:22 Switching to a different threat, and one that actually fits better for a coaster - the self destruct. The use of the film audio is right on point again. It's also neat how the lighting all changes for this alert. 7:39 Another fantastic video trick. "Worried about self destruct? Hah! Did you forget about me!" Backing up and then running past. I'm saying running when I know it's a coaster track, but that's just how well thought out the movements are. 7:50 And now we go into full-on coaster mode. This is a race against the clock through lots of badass effects and a cluster f**k of sound. 8:36 Take note of this environment. 8:53 Things take a turn for the ominous. Slows back down to creepy speed. 9:14 How many years did this one set-piece take to make? The hot breath effect really shines here as does the use of maggots for the ovipositor. 9:24 Time to go back to RUN LIKE HELL mode. Cue bombastic stuff. 10:03 "Where do you think you're going?" 10:09 Another cool launch sequence. 10:26 Think those last few minutes were explosive? Hah. Let's blow up that MASSIVE place you saw earlier. Just spectacular. 10:43 The music screams "We're outta here!" 10:47 Subtle yet really effective trick of adding the explosion to the image. 11:13 Slow and calm and the music seems to have stopped having a heart attack. 11:22 It's a very similar environment to the one at 8:36, but you'd never notice. That's how much of an impact the sound and music in this ride has. 11:34 Wait, the lights went off, what? And a growl. The end. This would be a perfect ending. Unfortunately anyone who has seen the film would've been expecting a big battle after this rather than a tube followed by the exit with the music still playing. A big sign saying "Aliens The Ride" to signal it's the end or something like that would've helped. The plot setup of missing out the finale to go for a "the monster is still alive!" cliffhanger instead is a fantastic way to bring the ride full circle to the start point though, and if it were a real life coaster would make sense as it doesn't spoil the film's ending.

I think with the Alien franchise in the place that it is, people need a return to form. This captured all the horror and claustrophobia of the genre, the strobing lights, massive set-pieces, atmosphere, and sound bring out the Colonial Marine in all of us. Terrific job, best of luck if you decide to pursue this as commission.

I've been fiddling through the opening scenario of this game for the better part of a week and have a couple of starting rides down and generally like the way they turned out but am still learning the basics. Watching this I feel like a caveman that was just shown a hammer a few days ago and then shown something like the Eiffel Tower. I know enough to understand how this was built and made and how it works so the effort and talent required and on display is outrageous.
