Seeing the leg gave him PTSD "This is how it starts". He thought to himself, first a Prosthetic Leg then Bionics, gradually then comes the Cyborgs then the HK-T Robots.

  • I’m a double amputee and ride around on a skateboard. When I go to the zoo and get off my board and hop around the chimpanzees go absolutely crazy. And there is always one chimpanzee. I guess he’s the leader that sits at the top and doesn’t look at any of thevisitors. But when all the chimpanzees go crazy, he is forced to turn around and see what’s going on! I love it.

  • There’s a higher level of awareness going here than just seeing a leg that’s unusual. The chimps seem more cognitive of we humans as similar to themselves, as opposed to say a lion or elephant. They expect a correctness and balance in our form. Expecting a similar behaviour and gait. A dog with a prosthetic would probably not stimulate the same reaction.

    • To: @keithdawson8893 - A very good interpretation of the situation. It would not be possible, of course, but it might have also been interesting if a comparative video was available in which the unfortunate gentleman had shown the chimpanzees his 'status' without the prosthetic. Perhaps it was not the 'missing' leg that disturbed them, but the actual prosthetic, itself. Amputations, if only of digits, is something that they may have a better appreciation of, than even ourselves.

    • I dunno about that, they’ve probably never seen anything like that since they’ve been in zoos their whole lives. Being wild animals you may get the impression that this sort of thing would be hardwired into them unlike humans, but that’s the interesting thing us higher level primates have in common -- We are so intelligent and social that much of what comes instinctual to dumber animals has to be learned by us. When you don’t have the ability to pass down information through generations and use much reason, or remember much, you must by necessity have more things baked into you instinctually. When you prioritize brain power and social communication, on the other hand, you sacrifice some things because those become learned behaviors. Less of the brain is used to store instinctual things and more for learning, adapting, reasoning, memory, communication, etc. Big example of this is parenting: for the longest time apes in zoos were always hand-raised by humans. Why? The mothers didn’t know how to take care of them. Since the very first primates for zoos were taken as babies from the wild many decades ago, we started raising these generations of zoo apes removed from their original social environment, so they didn’t get things passed down to them that their parents and grandparents learned. For many dumber animals, taking care of their babies is entirely instinctual. If it wasn’t they’d never live to adulthood. You can take these animals and put them in a cage, never having interacted with an infant of their species, and they’ll have babies and take care of them in much the same way they would in the wild. You can’t do this with higher level primates like chimps or gorillas (or people for that matter). These animals learn to take care of babies from experience and learning from their troop and mothers. By the time an ape is old enough to be a mother, she’ll have already spent years of her life around babies and watching how others take care of them, and she’ll also be surrounded by more experienced mothers who can help. Put a bunch of apes who have been raised by humans and never seen a child of their species before in a room, and they won’t know what to do. For the longest time if you let a mother ape in the zoo take care of her own baby she would almost always accidentally kill it. Since then, however, there’s been a huge effort to transition the zoo apes into taking care of their own offspring. It took a tremendous amount of time and effort to reteach these apes how to be apes, a slow and gradual process, but eventually the social groups in captivity started getting these skills back and could pass it to each other. Anyways that’s a bit of a tangent but I wouldn’t be surprised if the recognition of an exposed bone isn’t hard-wired into them without seeing it before. You wouldn’t say that a child getting surprised at a prosthetic is because the image of exposed bone is genetically hard-wired and they instinctively see it as an injury they’ve never witnessed, even though people are animals too. I think they were just curious. Anyways sorry if this is taken badly, I’m bored and on adderall and I just like talking about chimps, I ain’t trying to come at you or anything. Just wondering aloud too.

    • I could read stuff like this all day and potentially forget a segment of it a minute after, but it's an okay read nonetheless. makes me think if we're in the same predicament as animals are -- like a rat in a cage (bonus points for anyone getting that). do wolves even dream of deer or hunters in sheep's clothing? probably a whole recovered forest to fight over with. kind of unfortunate that it takes so much effort to help species like the ones you've mentioned, but so easy to undo all that work by actions we can't necessarily solve reasonably without getting into the nitty-gritty of things, especially in muddy waters where old men pay young men to die in caves for some amber or hunt an animal within some protected area with a certain risk of getting shot by rangers. I find it ironic still that despite all this information floating around, people still flock to some short-form content led by some grifter to harvest reactions and potentially misinform people about the state of things regarding the natural world. and with the way things are going with this generation, following a trend of rebellion and some apathy as well as turning the brains of people to mush, the animal situation could get worse or it'll have to wait in the backburner because the higher-ups gotta think about the next big thing to do, and let the animal situation get worse unless it serves a value to the country. it happened already, pandas already turned into some propaganda machine and milked for the tourism and the brownie points, and then there's the crowd that want the government to release them back into a habitat that no longer exists + is occupied by people that could potentially have nowhere to go as well. terrible situation all around. maybe I could make a video talking about these issues and see what people think about them, at least that could get some gears turning. alternate me would've just slapped grifter sponsors up the ass and waste people's time with clickbait, but pass me the Adderall.

They're probably pretty finely tuned, as we are, to notice and respond to variances in body shape, condition, and so on, e.g., the broken leg of an injured chimp. They obviously don’t know _what_ to make of a prosthetic leg like that but it appears to be definitely outside the range of what would be considered by them to be “normal.”

Chimps that regularly see humans know when they're seeing something that isn't right. They knew there was something not right about his leg, but not necessarily that it was an attached replacement.

  • I find this fascinating because a lot of people forget that chimps and other primates see us humans as fellow primates so they are reacting out of sympathy and fear for us in their own way. This wasn't aggression even though the amputee was a male primate, but of fear and concern for the hurt fellow primate. Chimps and other primates are actually very caring and affectionate beings, they just can't use words vocally like we do to express their concerns.
