Metallica - The Making Of Hardwired...To Self-Destruct (2016) [Full Documentary]
All the short making of videos posted by Metallica since the album release last year put into the right order and into one single video for ultimate viewing convenience.
While I was at it I also tried some EQ-ing to balance the audio levels a little bit, so the loud parts aren't as loud and the quiet parts not as quiet...
Enjoy!

still trash. imagine if Travis Barker was their drummer....so much better
You are correct. Lars is not the best drummer in rock, but he is a master arranger and writer. That's way way more important. If Lars says it's good, it's good. That is invaluable. Without that, you have a bunch of great musicians and very few great songs -- essentially Dream Theater.
@Jason Voorhees chill out EdGeLorD
@@chrisflashmusic , No Fucking Way!!!! Lars puts way to much grit, Grind and additude into Metallica Music.. Lars knows his shit and knows Metal inside out.. Travis is good with Pop music and is a more talented drummer, but he would never fit into Metallica.. Metallica is what it is because of Lars

Lars is such a mastermind when it comes to arranging songs. I rewatch this documentary every now and then since I play in a band and produce songs myself. Stuff like this is so fucking inspiring. The DEATH MAGNETIC one is fascinating as well.

It shows just how valuable Lars is and it goes way beyond his "band management" skills and his drumming abilities. Most of the haters have 0 clue how much he means to this band absolutely 0. He's every bit as important as anyone when it comes to the writing and arrangement process, especially the ladder. Without his arrangement skills the Metallica songs we know and love would be very different and probably not as good. Just listen to the riff tapes from puppets and justice and you'll see what I mean. The songs were all jumbled before they did final arrangements.
Love how James records his vocals WITH his guitar.
A lot of people do, it allows them to flow the energy that comes naturally from the floor of playing as a band.
LMFAOO i was just thinking about that
He's said he has to have something in his hands.
If it was a traditional office-business style, Metallica members would be: James: *The easy-going CEO that always brings new ideas to the company (riffs, melodies, lyrics etc...) and thus helping the entire project stay fresh.* Lars: *The project manager, making sure each piece (instrument parts) is arranged the best way they can.* Producers: *The IT department, always helping the project behind the scenes, we may not see them, but the project members certainly know their value!* Rob: *The sharp employee that always does A+ work in his specific area and that is most likely always getting employee of the month as well.* Kirk: *The contractor that the company calls only once in a while but he really enjoys what he does!*
Lmao...i love this, wtf?...

Hetfield has some of the best guitar tones ever. So tight, clean and also extremely heavy.
Bayonetwork1989 302 you got to be fucking deaf to say that tone is heavy or one of the best😂 the songs are good though
METROIDROCKSXP98 the clarity means you can have some heavy as fuck riffs. Bands like Monuments and early Meshuggah were inspired by their technique. Obviously this is my personal opinion though. Vildhjarta's tone of 'A Thousand Evils' is one of my favourite tones.
HIs guitar tone is very tame and boring nowadays. I think it is the most disappointing thing about this album. They finally managed to write som decent songs again, but then the production let them down. Compare it with Master, Justice and Black album. The guitars on those albums are extremely heavy and cool. He needs to bring out the Mesa Boogies again.
They use mids this time around Back in they day the scoop the mids I like the new sound now, sounds like classic rock with a bit of a punch for that heavy sound

One of the happiest moments in 40 years old man's life is Metallica coming back with the great album after so many years again. Thank you Legends!
The House That Metallica Built Lars is the architect designing the structure and drawing the blueprints. James is the builder laying the foundation and creating the structure. Rob is the carpenter making all the joints match up and connections tight. Kirk is the painter and landscaper who comes in near the end and makes everything look incredible.
They are the “King of Metal” Yes Load references the ones that are less used in this community
Well said, bro
Guitar Tech: Which guitar do you wanna use ? James and Kirk : Yes
I love that Lars and James get along the whole time. Just watched Some Kind of Monster and the contrast is crazy
To be honest Cliff's death really fucked the band up, and you can't fault them for that. Alcohol, drugs, life on the road, and the vast amounts of willing women served only to cause what that film showcased.
Its An interresting comparison. Watched the black Album docu, then some kind of monster, Then this one. All 3 are very different
It wasn't all fuzzy, warm feelings. I just recently watched a Hetfield interview where he said they both got so mad at each other during these recordings they didn't speak to each other for a week in the studio. Both can still be hard-headed fart-knockers.
@@acerimmer8338 which interview was that?
Best friendships are those you can have a heated argument that to onlookers would be "well they are over" but then a few days later you forget. Because in the end, if the positives outweigh the negatives you learn to move on and compromise if the friendship is real and worth it.@@acerimmer8338
57:00 Is the guitar gonna play the solo or you gonna play the solo ? Is there a différence ?
I haven't written a thing on my albums. My guitar writes it. I try and stay out of the way. THAT is the difference
Metaphsics!
I love that response.
My respect for Lars has increased, man is a genius when it comes to composing music.
This shows through with all the documentaries though. He was even the one that decided that enter sandman should be the lead single in the black album. James wanted it to be holier than thou.
Arranging
Lars is good, but he sure could use a guy like Bob Rock again, to put a different perspective. After all it was Rock who forced these guys to arrange tracks on black album the way we hear them today. Especially Lars's parts could be improved. Rock would not allow these drum lines to slide.
This kind of stuff shows that without Lars there wouldn’t be no Metallica his drumming may not be the greatest a lot of times but no one can’t argue that Lars ain’t a musical genius he drummed behind dozens of the greatest metal songs ever created the hate with him really ain’t deserved
@goldenwolf8081 I agree with you 110% most of it is the technically is everything crowd dissing on him because he isn't super technical but his style is perfect for Metallica he IS Metallica his name is literally on 99% of every Metallica song ever created. His arrangement skills are infinitely important to metallicas end result. Anyone who says Metallica needs a better drummer or Lars sucks or anything like that at all has 0 clue what they're talking about.
1:03:00 James alternate picking.
He alternate picks alot I'm not sure where this idea came from that he only downpicks just because he's known for fast down picking doesn't mean he never alt picks many Metallica songs are too fast to be down picked even by the great hetfield.
14:17 - That moment when Lars looks exactly like your aged-hippie social studies teacher from junior high
like his father!! haha
Yeah. like George Carlin. :)
Holy shit he looks like my Ethics teacher but less chubby and more accent XD
sits in chair backwards and then says "okay kids lets rap. Let's talk about how we feel." he reminds me of a Science teacher I use to work with. You know the one with the awkwardly long hair...the mullet ponytail and James Hetfield looks like a principal I use to work with. " excuse me sir, what do you want me to do with this one? she threw food across the cafeteria."
You have to admire how Lars doesn't care how ridiculous he looks in these docs. He looks the opposite of cool, but the results speak for themselves.
People complain about Lars and simple drumming but a lot of the greatest songs came from simple drumming. When it comes to the studio and producing an album Lars is a freaking genius
and justice and many of Lars drumming is NOT simple.he's a good drummer But far from a "Genius" he suggests things that's all. any 14 year old boy watching this might think of Lars as a genius.
These videos are all run through Lars' ego anyway, so of course they're going to paint him as a genius. In reality, he's a good drummer and a shit human being.
Without Lars and James, there is no metallica.
Justin Lesamiz I met Lars, he's very kind and interested in people. Can't agree with you on that.
Justin Lesamiz you know him ?
Man... I just watched the Some Kind Of Monster documentary and then went on to watch this. They are all in such a better mental state here. Like night and day. Glad to see them happy again. Love this fricken album 🤘🏻☠️
You can tell Metallica get out of an album both where they are mentally and what they want from it. One sets the tone, the other the composition and arangement.
Must be hard to produce them. Recording 9 seconds of drums - then get lost in a philosophical discussion about the meaning of that drumpart for 2 hours.
That's Lars work, for everyone who says he's a shitty drummer. He is more involved in Metallica songs than Hetfield.
I don't listen to Metallica too much these days, but damn I love and respect how transparent they are. To show all the behind the scenes stuff... warts and all... pretty cool. Especially for the die-hard fans.
@InfantrymanNYC you took the time to write this. Therefore you took the time to watch this! In essence there's something you like if not At least Respect the fact you can't do it,they can so they deserve respect!! METALLICA FOREVER!!!!!
Infantryman NYC Let’s hear your songs
@Infantryman NYC idiot trolls
I don't think that Lars is a bad drummer. He's a great drummer for HIS band. But, since he never played different cover songs while learning the drums (remember that he started playing barely before he, James and Ron McGoveny got together), his drumming is limited in style. I've seen him trying to play different cover songs on the fly, and it's been horrible. He's not a guy that can sit down and jam on others people's songs. But again, for Metallica though, he's great.
Infantryman NYC let's hear you play what Lars can huh or even play like hetfeild that's right you cant

It's said in the comments a bunch already but I'm not sure it can really be overstated that Lars really is one hell of a writer/producer. For those of you that haven't written and produced an album with a group of people I don't know if you can appreciate what a skill it is not just to hear something and have an idea (which itself is easier said then done) but to find the way to express that idea to the performer that is effective as well. It's no small task, especially when you are not the one with a guitar in your hands.

One thing this movie shows, when you get a Metallica record, you get a highly crafted record. The attention to detail is pretty amazing. I guess you could say that attention to detail means you loose some rawness, simplicity or even spontaneity but for me thats what sets Metallica apart that craft ethic, kinda like a classical music approach to Metal and that's cool.

lars was great until he got rich. then he got lazy and lost the hunger. this happens to most people. success ruins the human spirit.
Was gonna say , most teenage garage band drummers sound lke lars
this is so fun to watch. I love seeing how things come to be
I love so much watching this one immediately after watching Some Kind of Monster. Seeing the tension between Lars and papa Het in monster...then coming here to see two incredibly inseparable friends/brothers...it's amazing.
