Maradona more of a traditional and proper dribbler. But Messi does not need to even come close to the players - his high speed runs with twists and turns and body feints, enough to throw the players off track, on the wrong foot and send them packing from few meters away... Its crazy.

Its weird how similar these 2 were. Its like someone took all the skills and attributes of Maradona and made a baby and that baby was Messi. Both left footed, both short and fast, both unreal dribblers, both could do magical passes and both could put the ball anywhere they wanted when they shot. I doubt we will see another like these 2 in my lifetime

I agree that modern day game rules are protective for any attacker, but saying that messi is not a great dribbler does not posssess the same touch and that a less talented player could do it also with help from referees is just shameless. Yeah! It's a true! Diego and Leo have biggest talent ever, there are no differences between them. But Diego's carrer was a path full of incredible clashes with the best defenders ever. They were brutal, they were almost always attacking his legs. Defender of Athletic Bilbao had broken Diego's leg. Long pause and he moved in Italy were he was "welcomed" by the the most defensive league in the world.

As someone who enjoys artistry no matter where it comes from, these two are simply gifted. I am an American and someone who, I admit, does not know a lot about soccer history, but it does seem, and please correct me if I am wrong that the recent Messi videos are very much like the recent NBA as far as contact goes. It seems Maradonna played during a much grittier defensive time in the past. It looks as if they are attacking his legs whereas there is almost a softness to how the defenders attack Messi. It's easily seen from the video clips on a handful of clips. Goodness, the talent in both of them!

Players are more protected today, but they are also physically more prepared. So you have to have that in mind.

Maradona es con claridad el mejor jugador de la historia por una cantidad enorme de motivos que lamentablemente para la gente joven que no lo vio jugar y tampoco se interesa en conocerlo hay que mencionarlas. Técnicamente en el dominio del balón es ampliamente superior, con una inventiva y nivel de creatividad increíble, que solo logró exhibir Ronaldinho y nadie más, el control directamente parecía sobrenatural y con una precisión hasta graciosa por lo exagerado. Como gambeteador fue el número 1 en tiempos donde se turnaban para talarlo en la rodilla y sacarlo de la cancha cada 3 minutos sin recibir tarjeta, sin protección arbitral alguna, porque su regate era saltando las patadas continúas que recibía y si lo volteaban volvía a levantarse para seguir con el balón sin reclamar nada a nadie aunque lo estuvieran masacrando, algo impensado que vuelva a ocurrir, un nivel de valentía y coraje irrepetible, otra cosa es que es muy difícil lo hayan visto salir del campo por un foul recibido, era físicamente una roca en el tren inferior, soportaba cualquier tipo de contacto. Porque como estratega fue lo máximo en lectura de juego y habilidad del pase, un pincel en el pie, visión panorámica y pases desde ángulos, posicionamientos y con cualquier sector del cuerpo que parecían imposibles y totalmente inesperados, de cualquier distancia y en cualquier momento y contexto, el dueño del partido y de la dinámica del mismo. Porque defensivamente siempre colaboró luchando y recuperando balones. En cuanto al gol, la mayoría de su carrera la jugó de enlace o de mediocampista, algún año aislado de mediapunta, aún así fue 7 veces máximo goleador en torneos largos, 5 veces en Argentina con menos de 20 años y 2 veces en Napoli. Maradona en cuanto a goles se destacó totalmente por la forma en que los hizo y más que nada por el contexto, la importancia de los mismos, contra que rival y en qué escenario, goles siempre memorables, no para llenar estadísticas. Como líder, capitán, ejemplo de gallardia, tenacidad y mentalidad ganadora en el campo de juego no hubo ni habrá quien se le acerque, una bestia competitiva, un león que mejoraba a sus compañeros en lo mental y en rendimiento en cualquier equipo que jugaba. Y luego algo fundamental cómo ganó lo que ganó, la estadística queda en un segundo plano para medir sus conquistas, habrá gente que haya ganado más sin duda pero no de la forma que él lo hizo. Cómo logró lo que logró en Napoli es irrepetible, y lo exhibido en el mundial 86 y 90 difícil se vuelva a ver, en ambos mundiales eliminando potencias pero con diferentes desempeños, en 1986 por el nivel ampliamente superior estando en condiciones óptimas en lo físico y mental, y en el 90 por como lideró a un equipo a la final en el estado físico que estaba, con 3 lesiones grandes de tobillo, sin uña del dedo gordo del pie zurdo, con lesiones musculares varias, con un equipo disminuído y con el país organizador en contra en climas totalmente adversos. No sé volverá a ver una muestra de liderazgo como en ese mundial, en lo espiritual, único, por estos motivos ese segundo puesto está a la altura del mundial anterior que dominó de principio a fin.

En cuanto a dominio de balon y tecnica a mi punto de vista, estas equivocado Messi la tiene mas pegada al pie fijate que Maradona la lleva A 1 METRO cada vez que acelera, en cambio Messi la tiene pegada al botin. El hecho de que lo mataban a patadas, no significa que lo estuvieran marcando bien,al contrario recurrian muchos defensores a ese recurso por escasez tecnica y fisica. A mi punto de vista Maradona es inferior en practicamente todo a comparacion de Mesi, en goles,en regularidad,en efectividad,en vision de juego,en asitencias,en titulos individuales,colectivos Messi es superior,quizas Maradona era mas vistoso pero nada mas.

Muy buen analizes. Yo no vi maradona jugar y creo todavia que es el mejor del mundo. Por las condiciones que jugo como vos ditactes. Estamos en una epoca que los jovenes solo ven videos repetuasas en youtube. Se les queda grabado en la cabeza solo Messi, Messi y Messi. Si youtube estuviera en los 80s cuantas imagenes hubieramos recibido de Maradona. Muchos lo odian afuera de la cancha, Pero el futbol esta adentro de la cancha. Vos sabes que en los 80s no se daba el balon de oro a los sud-americanos. Maradona no tuvo el previlegio de Messi. Canchas de elites, Var, diferentes reglas. El futbol a cambiado mucho al favor del juego del individio. Maradona esta adelantado en su epoca. No veo como Maradona fue inferior a Messi. Messi en mi opinion lo veo muy comodo se fue a una liga facil. El Barcelona le dio todo jugadores grandes. Osea nunca se aventuro.!. Por eso creo que Ronaldo CR7 es un buen ejemplo como Maradona lo fue.

Messi's dribbling is on a totally different level to anyone that's played the game. He plays in an era were teams are more cohesive & press in packs of multiples, rendering less spaces. Hence, he's surrounded by sometimes up to three, four, players in a cul de sac & still destroy's them! Maradona era had big spaces, rendering the play more streched, in comparison to today. This allowed him to dart in & out from defenders. In scudetto Italy. They pressed more quickly & his dribbling numbers dropped. I personally don't see were Maradona dribbling is greater than either George Best or Johan Cryuff. Messi however, dribbles on tighter margins, in literally no spaces & still makes it look all so easy.

The reason you think Maradona dribbling is on some out of space level above Best & Cruyff is because, he's had greater exposure in the modern era. If you go on my twitter. I've got clips of Best & Cruyff dribbling from the half way line, into the opposition box. They also had greater two-footed usage, over the very one-footed Maradona.

BOTH WERE amazing. It;s like comparing Bently to Rolls Royce. It's all just personal references. Of course people from the younger generation will stick to Messi because that's what they experienced . Those born in the 70's or earlier will prefer Maradona. Both were legends however. Although it has to be said that Maradona won the World Cup in 1986 single handed and also Maradonna played for Napoli which at the time was not a very good club and he brought glory and triumph to the club. While Messi played for Barcelona which was a great team already. So his path was easier in my opinion

The big difference is the age they played in and the aggressive fouling that Maradona had to deal with. Look at how many times the defender pulls out of the challenge, hands in the air, with Messi and how many times they try to slice Maradona in two. Imagine what damage Maradona would do today. EDIT to add that the balls were heavier back then and the pitches often very poor. Even the boots are much better today, plus the conditioning.

Very to difficult to tell who's better. Undoubtely the two best dribbler in history. If I dare an opinion : maybe Maradona has a slightly better acceleration and stands better on his feet (good point for the 80s). And Messi has a slightly better close control and body feints. Let's call it even !

You can't split them technically, tbh. Maradona was more elegant on the ball while Messi is perhaps a little more intricate in his dribbling (due to his little legs). The greatest thing for me was watching Messi replicate Diego's World cup 'greatest goal' v England. He must have dreamed of doing that as a kid, lol!! #MAGICAL p.s. It seems Maradonna played during a much grittier defensive time in the past. It looks as if they are attacking his legs whereas there is almost a softness to how the defenders attack Messi.
