Waiting In A World Of Instant Gratification

Waiting is not an easy task or skill in a world of instant gratification. What makes it even harder, teaching the concept of waiting to an autistic kid with a sensory processing and language disorders. What makes it even harder than that? Knowing that the wait is for something that will help with sensory regulation. If I had it my way as a parent, I would instantly make the water warm enough to swim in... Right now. Problem is, that is not realistic.

  • One great way to teach just about anything is to do a show & tell on mom & dad than on the little one! I can see Braylee learns a lot by watching mom & dad great job Braylee!

  • Oh, she is doing so much better with those eye drops. It was great to see her trying to pull her lower lid down - that is the way that I put in my eye drops. Waiting can be so hard for some things, even when we can understand the concept of waiting and the reason why we must wait. You work so hard to help Braylee to understand these concepts and I think you are right, she may understand much better than she can communicate to you. She is a very bright girl.

  • Hi fam ❤❤❤ Braylee toy looks fun. Magnets?! My favourite was magnets. Love the pool guys. I love water. I don’t why us autistics are addicted to being near water particularly in it lol 😂. I’d say for my sensory processing issues is feelings of agitation & restlessness in a waiting situation. I hope this may help. Dy xxx ❤❤❤

  • Just a bit of personal experience my son (25) is on the spectrum, and changes in his routine have always been hard for him. When he was in grade school he would keep the teacher on task, for instance, if it was reading time and the teacher decides to watch a movie, he would correct the teacher and say it’s reading time lol 😂. Now he works overnight stocking at the local grocery store and if they change his schedule, it throws him off a little, but he’s learned over the years how to adjust and cope with the adjustment/transition. Braylee is still learning how to process the transition from winter to summer, but you can clearly see an improvement in her ability to process the transition. Seasons change, but summer and winter come once a year and last 3(ish) months, so it will probably take a few more years for her to easily adjust to the changing seasons. Routines and patterns are the key to autism. It’s how their brains work. That’s why swinging, rocking, music, stacking in order, etc are common traits in autistic people.

  • Dear Wee Family :) I'm sitting on a park bench somewhere in germany right now and a moment ago I was very angry about some relationship stuff and life and whatever and I just felt very miserable... I also really walloed in self-pity which is absolutely the worst 😅 And then I thought about you lot and the way you promote aproaching life and relationships on your chanel and I instantly felt more compassion, more scope of my action and I kind of switched into this 'fuck self-pity let's aproache life like the Wee Family'-rage mode :) Thank you very much for your work and for beeing so open. I startet following you because I wanted to know more about autism and I just realized that I use what I learn from you mainly in order to be more compassionate towards anybody who is just human or any other living beeing :) + you are so funny I just love it 😂 I wish you all the Best! C

  • Sorry, I tried to comment on your eye drop video but it wouldn’t let me. I know a lot of people made suggestions and I am sending one more. Once you have her in a position you think will work and have the bottle above ready to go. Have her look off to the a something. Then drop the drop…she won’t see the drop coming. Then lots of praise. This is what worked for us. Hope this helps, loved seeing the modelling.

  • I am autistic and waiting is extremely hard for me it's like a storm inside where I'm racing I side and feeling disconnected from the outer part of me. I find distractions with my hand or mind helps to some degree.

  • Would showing Braylee the app with the graph of the pool temperature on it, with 80° marked as the goal help her? She could check it every day to see if the pool is 80° yet
