MIT Professor George Lusztig (2014 Shaw Prize) discusses his career in mathematics with University of Oxford Mathematician Dr Tom Crawford. Recorded at the 2023 Hong Kong Laureate Forum.
*CORRECTION: the image at 8:55 is Serge Lang, when George is in fact talking about Jean-Pierre Serre.
George begins with his early career in Romania, before a chance meeting with Isadore Singer - and the invitation to Oxford that followed - changed his life. Whilst there, George worked with Singer and Michael Atiyah, following the latter to Princeton as his graduate student.

    • Hello @babupriya8814. I love that you stick to your researches with this formula. Maths has this amazing ability to stick not solely in the mind of post-PHD maths students or teachers. It's wonderful that you are enthusiastic about discovering something intriguing and new in maths. I love that! What is your precise and specific question, please? What do you wish and how can we help, please?

    • @@babupriya8814Could you write your studies and formulas in Indian ? It would then give you time to develop your english through internet to translate it, or to leave something that might be translated later on by somebody who speaks Indian

  • You know you have reached the top of the elite when you have a shaw prize. Fun fact, you also get $1.2 million. I think it should be at least $12million. Far more useful for humanities advancement, that say similar prize money for winning a tennis grand slam.

    • Grand slam makes more money than any award program. Awards program generally tends to be charity work rather than a mere competition or business. The value of research shouldn't be the prize money the researcher gets. Rather, it should be based on the impact of the research work in the field.
