Robotaxi technology is not good enough to work everywhere: Edge Case Research CEO

Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk has turned his attention to the latest endeavor for the EV company: robotaxis. After the heavy criticisms lobbed toward Tesla's own full self-driving features and other automakers' robotaxi fleets is this the right move for the electric vehicle innovator?
Edge Case Research CEO Michael Wagner - whose risk management specializes in autonomous driving adoption - explains that the technology is "not yet good enough to operate everywhere" based on many variables and is curious to see how Tesla has its self-driving data "calibrated" to account for safety.
"What I would really love to see in that kind of an event is what's called a safety case, which is a structured argument for why the technology is ready to go out on the road. We have standards that are written like UL 4600 that they could use to be able to argue that very effectively to the public and to regulators," Wagner says to Yahoo Finance.

  • It's still just public transportation and people don't just use cars for pre planed point to point trips. They also don't want to use cars thousands of other customers have been in. The cars may drive without a human but they don't get cleaned and repaired without a human.

  • A few years ago everyone said this would be a multi billion dollar business and each company expected to get a huge percentage of public transportation business. As it turns out the business finite and already served by too many providers.

  • “Robotaxi” can be categorized in the same category of “flying cars” and “living on Mars”

  • The new market for Robo Taxi's is young people who choose to not buy a car due to cost of car, insurance, parking, maintenance ect. Plus if they do have a drink or smoke a joint they are not breaking the law. They will choose a Robo Taxi for a few reasons, it's an EV, it will arrive when it says, it knows where you are going, it's quiet. It may cost less or the same or more and this may influence choice but I think they will have loyal repeat customers. For many this will be better than owning a car or taking public transit. When a EV is waiting it is not running burning gas.

    • I guess you've never heard of eco mode the fact that it takes mining of over 200,000 pounds of earth to make ONE EV battery. My 2002 f150 is more planet-friendly than any and every EV EVER.

    • I disagree. Its one of those obvious job that will get replaced with technology, because its clearly cheaper to have a computer drive you around than a human. The same goes for the truck industry.

    • @@Marnildtruck industry can’t afford to pull over every 30 minutes to charge for 30 minutes because they are pulling an 80,000 pound load, in a non existent infrastructure.

    • Thats inevitable. The days where you just had to show up somewhere, and work with little to no knowledge is soon over. It will be very difficult for everyone with a below average intelligence to make a good living in the future.

    • If by some miracle it were to come to existence (which it won’t), very few people would feel comfortable being driven in an empty car let alone elements, the battery 🪫 in cold weather.. the list is endless. It’s a 5th grader school project idea.

  • People will die in robotaxi if Tesla current fsd is used. It won't be good enough to run taxi within the next 5 years unless they limit the route to specific areas.
