    • It was him standing too far away from the boards that caused the problem. Ekholm went easy on him. If he'd have been standing against the boards like he should have been it wouldn't have happened, he was trying to leave the zone before he had possession of the puck, with his back turned and his head down. Rookie stuff. I did that when I was 13 and my coaches and team all told me to not to do it again when I got plastered. It's begging the d-man to step up, Avs did everything wrong.

    • @@meifert2 Actually, you pretty much can. This was what medical professionals would refer to as a mild (grade 1) concussion because Rantanen displayed Post-Traumatic Amnesia (PTA) for ~1 minute, without a loss of consciousness. A moderate (grade 2) concussion would be a brief loss of consciousness followed by a more severe case of PTA lasting for much longer, anywhere from 30 minutes to a day. A severe (grade 3) concussion would be a loss of consciousness followed by PTA lasting anywhere from 1 day to more than a month, depending on severity. All this being said, "grading" concussions is actually being phased out by medical professionals - in my area at least. The spirit of your comment IS correct that I do not have the information to accurately assess how serious this particular concussion will be for Rantanen. Sometimes mild concussions end up causing long term issues and take forever to get over, sometimes severe concussions have no long term repercussions whatsoever.

  • One of the first things they teach you in hockey is "keep your head up." And every player knows if they see someone cheating on that rule to deliver a big hit. That's what happened here.. hockey 101.. if you get caught with head down looking at puck you could get rocked. Ekholm showed veteran play by not laying him out totally, so Rantanen caught somewhat of a break. However, it was funny that Rantanen started ranting afterwards as he left the ice, living up to his name. The hit was clean, hope Rantanen is okay. However, Avs announcers are always talking about how Rantanen is a "moose" and how he stiffs opponents around the creese. This time he got some of his own medicine. Look folks no way the NHL is going to stop old time hockey they have tried the last 7-8 years & yes it's made for amazing highlight reels but how much of that can you even take in? It's now every night every game in the league has highlight reels, But G D IT it's not NORMAL!

    • I agree with both of you except ekholm is also a star player so in this case I think it’s good I mean he’s Edmontons best Dman if he fights they lose him in a 2-2 game for 5 minutes and if he hurts himself in the fight he’s out for ploffs. Ekholm and Bouchard don’t fight there but any other dman for sure has to answer the bell there

  • Sloppy play by Johnson, sloppy play by Rantanen. Picture perfect textbook hit by Ekholm. Johnson passes without looking and Rantanen is accepting the pass in the danger zone 2 feet away from the boards. Most kids learn not to do this by 14 years old. The fatigue from the game made them make two rookie mistakes. That's one of the cleanest hits I've ever seen, ever. He even lets up 50% to make sure there's no charging or boarding.

No real intent to hurt the guy, just one of those small moments in a game a player wasn't totally aware of his surroundings and got knocked off balance and unfortunately hit his head on the ice without getting his hands/arms out in front of him.
