  • 7:45 "Why is the camera shaking so much?" Joss Whedon was tired of the clean sterile look and modern polished camera work of other SF shows. His director of photography used obsolete 1970s filming techniques to give Firefly a distinctive look, to make the audience feel in the middle of the action. You will see handheld shots, shakycams, offcenter shots, zooms, lens flares, rack focused shots.

    @seanmcmurphy4744@seanmcmurphy474411 ай бұрын
    • It even says in one of the books that they used to bump the cameraman because he was too steady 🤣

      @goraz43@goraz4311 ай бұрын
    • Yeah, Joss basically revived the techniques and everyone else jumped on the bandwagon ever since, until John Wick then revived single, long, steady, well-choreographed shots, bringing it full circle.

    • I think I also heard that the chaotic, shaky camera work was primarily done on board Serenity and the planets on the outer rim and much more polished and steady camerawork was done whenever we visited the core planets or were watching the Alliance.

    • It's funny because watching this reaction makes me realize how static modern camerawork is. I never really noticed the "shakyness" of the handheld camera work of this show until it was pointed out, because it used to be very normal. Only now do I realize how much shows have moved away from this, and that explains why so much new stuff feels 'sterile' as you put it.

  • Something a lot of reactors get confused by is the way many characters will drop a Chinese word or two in their dialogue. Joss felt it was a way to imply the cultural melting pot of his universe. As well as being a cheeky way to inable his characters to curse and swear without being censored.

  • One of the influences was an older Western called Stagecoach, which had a variety of characters traveling to the same destination facing the same dangers for varied personal reasons. The 'Verse is a postwar series, like the expansion of the Old West. People seeking new lands, new opportunity, leaving much of 'civilized' society behind, yet bringing much of Progress with the railroad. Malcolm Reynolds, Captain of Serenity. War veteran. Zoe Alleyne Washburne, First Mate on Serenity , Wife of Hoban Washburne. War Veteran. Hoban Washburne, Pilot of Serenity, Husband of Zoe. "Wash", Civilian. Kaywinnet Lee Frye. Mechanic of Serenity. "Kaylee", Civilian. Jayne Cobb, 'Public relations" on Serenity. Inara Serra, Registered Companion, shuttle tenant on Serenity. Her rent has often been the only reliable income between jobs for fuel, fees, and food. Shepherd Book, paying passenger. Man of faith. Simon Tam, fugitive, doctor, top 1% of his class. Earning his keep as Medic on Serenity. River Tam, fugitive, cargo, Simon Tam's sister. Serenity, Firefly class transport, -03 model. Home. Along with the 14 episodes, there are the R Tam Sessions [viral online advertising for the movie], and the movie Serenity. After that, Browncoats have graphic novels, licensed tabletop roleplaying games for both the tv series and the movie, novel, and comic book series. Ron Glass, our Shepherd, had passed away in the years since.

Don't get too attached to your opinion of any of the characters. They're not heroes or anti-heroes. They're just people trying to get by on the fringes of the Alliance. Remember that Mal & Zoe started the show fighting a war against the Alliance. Simon and River are on the run from the Alliance.

  • I subscribed for your "Firefly" journey. This partial series (with a movie finisher) has more depth, more character arc, and more dynamic character interactions than most series. Even the minor characters & scenes have depth. Everything shown has a well written, nuanced reason behind it - and a lot of foreshadowing. Mal's cruel joke - When Mal told Simon "Kaylee is dead" he was testing Simon's true character. Simon's genuine concern for Kaylee is why Mal offered him a position on his crew at the episode's end. Drinking water would be limited on a ship. Using very little to rinse your hands and face would be necessary. Chances are that isn't drinking water but more of a sanitizer/cleaner that Mal used sparingly on his hands and face during his bathroom break.

  • No spoilers. One thing to remember is that at the time this series was made, "nerd culture" was not as mainstream and cable and broadcast TV services were completely different than today. It was difficult at that time to find an audience for a character driven, sci-fi, western mix type of show without a proven star that was very expensive to produce. Only a niche audience was into sci-fi for example. All of those factors would have held it back but of course today everyone talks about the bungled marketing. Well, it was bungled in part because it was a difficult show to prove it had an audience. Edit add: It was lighting-in-a-bottle via DVD sales, of course.

    @eschiedler@eschiedler11 ай бұрын
    • What you are saying is true. But the real problem wasn't the marketing - I was/am the target audience for this show and I heard about it no problem and was interested enough from what I heard to tune in for the first episode (the second pilot, of course). But the lousy time slot and the fact that just about every time I was actually able to try to tune in it had been preempted by something else meant that I didn't see much of it until after it had already been canceled.

  • "Firefly: Serenity": The pilot episode that Fox TV executives said "didn't have enough action." It is a time of civil war, with Outer Rim rebels fighting to "be left alone" by The Alliance of the inner planets. In the solar system, Companions are sorta like Geisha. I watched the episodes that Fox TV deigned to broadcast, but I didn't see the show until I bought the DVD set. The grimy 'Verse of "Firefly" lies on the outer rim, where old tech like gunpowder pistols "just work" better than inner planet LASER pistols.

    • It was a classic question of the sci fi world of the time: " On Star Trek, where were the bathrooms?" Joss chose to answer it right there in the pilot. It was also the time of the Great Star Wars debate, occasioned by George Lucas revision: " Who shot first, Han Solo or Greedo?" Joss weighed in- MAL SHOOTS FIRST. He's either intuitive and very fast, or his combat skills are super tuned. He chooses quickly, deals decisively, and then gets ready for the NEXT problem .

But I said half a season because it was only the fall half of our tv season. It's no wonder the world thinks we work too hard here. The Lone Ranger may have had 50 episodes per season Gilligan's Island more than 30, Star Trek 28. Kolchak, The Night Stalker had two good movies and 20 episodes. The snippets of Chinese are meant to convey that, as well as sometimes getting obscenities past the censors. The English has also evolved over a few centuries, which explains words like "gorram" (a descendent of "goddam"), as well as different slang such as "humped" and "shiny."

It's important to watch this series in the order it was intended because each episode builds on the previous one. There will be a lot of character development and world building throughout the run of this amazing show, especially in the first few episodes. There will be times you will love each character and there will times you will hate them. Well, except Kaylee. Kaylee is awesome. • I used to be a US Navy submariner (sub mareen er). Pronounce it that way and you won't insult the crew as if you say sub mariner, it means that they are less than true sailors. The sinks and toilets are what's like on a submarine due to space. I was lucky as I was an officer so I shared a room with another officer. Enlisted quarters were filled with bunk beds and a trunk to keep their stuff. I had a closet although it was difficult to pile all the different uniforms I had: poopy suits (overalls), khakis, and different uniforms depending on the ceremony or season, plus my civilian clothes. When we pull into port, we didn't want to be spotted in uniform as we go visit local bars, restaurants, or just play pool.

  • Thank you for watching this series and thank you to the person that convinced you to watch it. I know you're unsure of the characters now, but as you watch the series you'll learn about each one. Firefly has a great storyline, but it's the characters that make Browncoats really love this show. Everyone has their favorite character, but ain't no one that don't love Kaylee. Oh, and please watch out for spoilers. Some people love to say things they think will help, but try to watch the show as it naturally plays out. That makes it the most fun.

  • The weird camera work is purposefully designed to mimic found footage/guerilla documentaries. As though you are the cameraman yourself-you wouldn’t necessarily know where to focus or who was important, so sometimes the camera work doesn’t seem to make sense from a traditional cinematography point of view, but trust me, there’s a method to his madness.

  • If you can, try to stay away from the idea of liking or not liking some characters. You may not see it yet, but all the characters have likable and not likable traits, and they are really messy and complicated, particularly in their relationships. This show is pretty unique - not just in it's setting, but also in it's attempt to stay away from typical character tropes, and it leans more on the relationships of the crew members, which vary widely. Each of these characters looks at the world through a different lens and reacts to things very differently, and often not in a way you would expect. The joy for us watching it is not necessarily trying to figure out what is going to happen and predict and categorize things, but to plumb the depths of the relationships and see what is there. And as we do, most of us feel that we develop a ridiculously strong bond with all of these characters. There are a lot of details that you are probably missing - don't worry, that is pretty typical. It usually takes several watch throughs before you start to really draw connections between what is going on and why it happens - which is another reason why we love this show so much. Can't wait to watch more episodes.

  • It all takes place in a new planetary system that the human race has moved to after the Earth was exhausted. A mix of technology is actually realistic - not only because the outer planets and moons tends to be poor, but also because people keep using the old stuff that works. Some of our technology would still be recognisable to a person from the Bronze Age.

  • Alan laughed at the captains little joke… He called him psychotic… But he was still laughing his ass off all the same. Also not sure where book from the abbey get a jerk designation.. He did put down the cop that shot kaley.. I don’t have a problem with that..at the end of show he’s pouring out his heart to someone he’s just met…hardly a jerk move. Btw not sure if you realized it but that scene had the holy man on his knees confessing to the harlot…who gives him some sage advice. One more thing, you cut out the best part of revers description… “And if we’re very lucky they’ll do it in that order”

  • This double-length pilot didn't please the stoooopid network execs, they felt there wasn't enough action - so the next episode was written over a long weekend and was broadcast as the pilot. It does a quicker job of introducing the cast and stands as a pilot on its own. Be curious after you see it, which you think makes a better pilot?

  • Yeah in this 'verse Companions are honourable, and high society. The rest of the crew... are commoners she is... important. Trust me these character will grow on you. Jayne might grow on you like athlete's foot, but you will get used to to miss them before they are done with you. Right now they are all rubbing against each other... they will soften as they settle in. They will stay rough around the edges, but they are "outcasts" so they will need each other. The Reavers... that one sentence about what they will do... is very strong exposition of them... and you do not want to meet them.

  • Al right, another new Firefly reactor. KZhead knows I am a big Firefly fan so the put you on my computer. And since I love this show I will subscribe am join you on this short but wonderful journey. You did good and you will learn more about these characters and their backgrounds as we go thru the 14 episodes. You will find Mal loosening up since in this 1st episode Nathan Fillion thought his character needed to loosen up and he talked with Joss Whedon the creator who agreed and Mal's character is just a little bit different from now on. Keep up the good work.

  • I'm thrilled to see you starting Firefly. It'll be interesting since you're not doing it in release order and all the other reactions I've watched were in that order. If I'm going to catch the next episode I'm just going to have to subscribe and wait for the notification. Sorry but now you're stuck with me. The one scene I was hoping you'd include was the "Crazy Ivan" maneuver. You seemed impressed by it. I peeked and saw that you reacted to The Mandalorian season 3 but not all the episodes. In the 3rd episode, The Convert, Bo-Katan did a similar move and I told other reactors that it was like the "Crazy Ivan" What are your thoughts on that? Well, I'm gonna go through more of your reactions and add them to my "watch later" Take care, Catherine
