It's the game where we try to figure out where and when intriguing historical photographs were taken. I don't quite know why I abandoned this 6 months ago because not only is it really enjoyable but there was a perfectly attainable record to be beaten. Either way, here we are!
Join me as I scour the Balkans for a bridge, attempt to date a fiat panda and commit a Marilyn Monroe based howler.
Still haven't played TimeGuessr yet?
www.timeguessr.com/index.html
“If this Fiat Panda is a sun dial.. It’s about 5pm.” Is a new favourite quote
Tom, looking at a number plate: I know what year this car was made Also Tom, looking at a man in a winter coat and a thick hat: this is obviously in Vietnam. Where is Saigon again?
To be fair, I guess most people didn't second guess that, I know I just went "oh obviously Vietnam, that's kinda boring to get that twice in a row", my only complaint was that he forgot Saigon was renamed lol
@@fbpo1699 I mean, my dumbass didn't know it was in Korea either. But most people when zooming in on a man with a fur collar would probably instinctively know that it's not in Vietnam.
@@tallky Well I'm the worst kind, who thinks "Marilyn Monroe, must be Korea then since Vietnam is too late" but when Tom starts speculating I immediately give up and think "okay so it's Vietnam then, go figure"...
@@JohannesWiberg She was already extremely famous by the time Kennedy was sleeping with her and he died in 63, but you're right, Tom had me second guessing myself.
I was shouting the lyrics to Billy Joel's we didn't start the fire, at the screen! North Korea, South Korea, Marilyn Monroe.
Freeze at 3:28 - Tom is both saying "Okay, wish me luck in finding Abbey Road" and looking directly at it.
Hes very good at doing that in many of his videos.
9:33 "I don't think we have a High Street there"
my favourite british geography man released a new video
And so did Tom!
he is tosser
You are correct
What about Jay Foreman and the Map Men?

The story behind the Marilyn photo is actually kinda crazy. Basically she was signed to 20th century fox at the time and despite her having had 3 years of immense success and brought them so much money, her contract hadn't changed since 1950 and she was getting paid shit and was not allowed to decide which projects she took. She wanted a new contract and to be allowed more serious roles and not just be eye candy. The studio refused mostly because the head executive of the studio hated her and then they suspended her! This was front page news at the time, with Marilyn being labelled as difficult and rude- to combat the negative press she got married to Joe DiMaggio literally days later and as part of her honeymoon flew to Japan because he had promised his ex coach to help him train baseball players there. Understandably this was not Marilyn's wish for her honeymoon, so her and the wife of the aforementioned ex basketball coach, flew to Korea and she preformed for the troops there. To say this string of good PR worked would be an understatement as when she returned to American she received a prize for "most popular female star", got a new contract with fox, a 100K bonus and was promised the lead in the 7 year itch- which is now her most infamous role ever
That sounds like a setup, if I ever heard one...
Famous, not infamous, I think you mean. Infamous is famous for being extremely bad.
Grosvenor Square was, and possibly still is, the location of the US embassy in London. I believe the 's' is silent in Grosvenor.
The embassy moved a couple years ago to Nine Elms.
Not any more. It moved south of the river to Nine Elms in 2018.
It used to be there in the 60's but now it is located in Nine Elms. I would have searched for the current location and got it horribly wrong :D
Turning it into a hotel now
Right away when Tom says "UK was not involved" I was thinking "well go to US embassy then" 😄
Just remember that "most" means "bridge" in all slavic languages I can imagine. It's very often used as a part of town names.
So Mostar is just like Bridgetown
"There's a massive city over there" while looking a 30 year old pre war photo. I love this channel.
1980 was 43 years ago sorry to be the one to tell you
@IAmABoss2 time is moving too fast
@@IAmABoss2 hush now!
Pre balkan wars
@@davisladd6473 yes pre war like I said.
Grosvenor (pronounced GROW VNER) Square was the site of the old United States Embassy.
I absolutely love seeing you play this! And cant wait for more ❤️
I don't know if I've ever heard the phrase, "If this Fiat Panda is a sundial." Great video as always.
timeguessr is a great series, hope more people will catch on👍 keep it up Tom
agreed
Tom, you can change the map to satellite view, there's a little button on the top right of the map. Might help identify buildings etc..
It wouldn't be a Tom video if he actually knew the features of the game.
@@vegancam It's part of the charm though
wow i actually recognized the Mostar bridge from Shiey's recent cycling journey. always love when random overlap happens between some of my favorite channels.
You and Greg are the first round on Todays Daily TimeGuessr 😁From your America travels.
No way, that’s so cool 😅
Soldiers were wearing winter hats! And yes Ho Chi Minh was at one point Saigon.
Cheers Tom for mentioning your past videos playing this mode. I always get your videos recommended to me through the home page, but for some reason those particular ones never made it there and I missed them. Will go back and watch after this one!
Same here, I had to double check thoses vids cause I never saw them before ... Thanks youtube Algorithm
The algorithm is a cruel and erratic mistress
Surely time to subscribe!
Agreed! No need to rely on the homepage.@@tommangan7
As a proud Welsh citizen it brings me great pleasure listening to Tom trying to pronounce Welsh words and places😂🙌🏼
I'm English but I do know that single f in Welsh is pronounced v.... double ff is used for the f sound...I notice Tom does incorrectly pronounce f wrong in quite a lot of videos, including not saying Welsh river Afon like the river Avon.
@@leod-sigefastAs I have A level German and a Welsh grandmother, I was always amused that the Germans pronounce V as F, while the Welsh pronounce F as V. Made learning the languages very confusing at first
I thought he was joking, mispronouncing it intentionally. It's spelled "Carnarvon" in English (like Lord Carnarvon, whom anyone born between 1922-1990 is almost guaranteed to have learned about in school, almost anywhere in the world) and is a fairly well known name even if you don't know Lord Carnarvon. Maybe younger people don't know these things nowadays
It IS great fun, people are missing out!
Been to Mostar myself when I went travelling earlier this year, in fact have a picture from (near enough) the exact same spot as the video. Was such a lovely place to visit and that part of the world is very fascinating. Love the videos Tom!
I’ve got about the same photo, from 2019. Recognized the spot immediately.
I like the warm hats on the soldiers and Tom guesses Vietnam:-D
I'm amazed he didn't notice that
At first i thought its russian hat ushanka 😂
Dude, you are so good at this, do more of these. I knew round 4 was Korea by the cold weather clothing the troops had on. Vietnam is very tropical.
Exactly :) That soldier with the camera had a big jacket! And lots wearing those cold weather hats.
And then there’s the lady freezing in her dress 😂
This is the first TimeGuesser video I have seen of yours. I'll go back and watch the others for the clicks.
The Capello/Kaka/Trump round from an old episode of this is one of my favorite moments from this channel ever
Legendary moment
Grosvenor is pronounced "Grovener", I think (I am Australian). I think the protesters were there because it was the site of the US embassy at the time. I think the clue to the Marilyn Monroe one was the clothing of the soldiers. Some of them are wearing heavy overcoats with fur trim, which makes more sense for Korea in winter than Vietnam (especially southern Vietnam, which is tropical). Who else was yelling at the screen when he changed his mind about Mostar?
I love watching this series a lot. It's a fun blend of history, geography, and sometimes even ecology with seeing how environments have changed over time. It's a fascinating time, and I love watching it. Edit: 15:28. I was thinking this was Korea, because the soldiers were all dressed too warm for it to be Veitnam. I'm pretty sure it's too hot in Vietnam for them to be dressed like that.
Love you dude, but that thumbnail utterly got me, clickbait wise! Knew that wasn't Llandudno in an instant, as did you, you cheeky scamp! Love these editions, very entertaining.
watching you fail mostar bridge when word most means bridge in bosnian really got me haha nice video mate, cheers from bosnia
I have been waiting for a TimeGuessr video! I love these! Thanks, Tom!
Fun fact the word Most in Mostar is translated to bridge😂. I was laughing my ass of when you said "it can't be there"
Basically that city name means Old Bridge
@@mikoajnierada7857 If I remember correctly the name derived from Mostari, meaning Bridge guard during the ottoman era.
@@corawhite3684 Most means Bridge, Star means Old, both words combined make Mostar :)
@@mikoajnierada7857 I know that. I'm mentioning the origin of the name 😄
@@mikoajnierada7857 I'm curious about your ideas on Slavic word composition. :) By this logic, Chrzanów means New Horseradish: Chrzan is Horseradish, Nów is New...
This gamemode is really fun to watch, Incredible how close you were with the years!
I just entered the Daily Timeguessr game and the first image was of you in South Carolina!
These are so much fun to watch. I find myself researching each photo before your guess is made because I just can't wait to read up on the history. Please do more Tom!
I've been enjoying these videos, please keep making them!
I love these videos. Great spin on the traditional Geoguessr content.
Huge fan of your videos, Tom! Love the Timeguesser content!
This really is great fun. Probably one of my favourite videos on your channel
Love these! Would definitely like to see more. Really enjoy the videos where you're analyzing photos like this and Geo Detective :)
This must be my favorite game to watch you play!! Please more of this!
One of my favorite new formats/games you've done on here.
I've been watching just about every video from you recently but timeguessr has been one of my recent favorites, so keep it up!
Love your timeguessr videos. I really really hope this one does well so we can see more. It's the perfect combination of geography and history :)
I'm so glad you're playing this again!! I laughed out loud at the Paul jumpscare
I watch all of your videos for you and what you bring in conjunction with the content. Very glad I found your channel years ago!
Absolutely a fan of these videos, and looking forward to more!
I was checking the game, saw there is a "Daily" challenge, went to play it, and what I found? Tom in person in his North America antics.
No one: Not a single soul: Geoguessr player: "If this Fiat Panda is a sundial, it's probably like 5pm"
Quick message to say I love your content mate - keep it up!
I love the these videos! Hubs and I have learned that we are also crap at determining date via the fashions but they’re all great fun to watch. Keep it up!
Nice one! I'm impressed how accurate was calculating the year from license plates. I'm looking forward to more of this game :)
You are with your attitude one of my favorite! Keep like you are! ❤
Tom I just want you to know that you make me very happy, all of your videos simply fill me with joy 🥰
Love the timeguessr vids! Commenting for the algorithm (and Tom) to favor them so I might see more.
Love Timeguessr mate, I do hope this video does better than the previous ones (which I have also really enjoyed) numbers wise because it's very interesting and entertaining watching you go at it with an extra added layer with the age of the photos. Very cool. Keep it up Tom, you're a gem.
Absolutely wonderfully entertaining to watch. So impressive. You're so good at this. More timeguessr pleaaaase! views arent everything!
Loving this series. Please keep at it.
This is some great content Tom, keep it up!
Hope the amount of views doesn't stop this series, I'm thoroughly enjoying it Love the fact that the photos have a historic context behind them, some of them are fascinating And your narration makes it even better, really hope to see more of this!
From one Davies to another, you're pretty amazing at this honestly. You definitely have areas of expertise (Austin Maestro and Marilyn Monroe histories are not your strongest areas) but overall you're uncannily good at this. Well done!
I've been to Mostar and was screaming when you changed your guess location. Great video as always lmao
For the 4/5 one, the troops wearing warm winter clothing should've been a hint that it wasn't vietnam :)
Always easier to comment in hindsight
@@giga-ooga-booga I mean the winter clothing was really obvious. My first instinct went to something like Russia, but Idk if Monroe was already a star at that time. It has nothing to do with hindsight
@@DJSMedicate You do realise that the US and Soviet Union/Russia have effectively been at war since the end of WW2? Why would they let a load of American troops in?
I was yelling at the screen, "It's the Korean War!"
@@giga-ooga-boogacome on, It was obvious- Monroe died before JFK, vietnam war was after jfk
Love seeing that tuft of hair sitting atop a brilliant geography mind working thru timelines
My guess is that the US Embassy used to be in Grosvenor (GROVE-NER) Square, there are loads of embassies in that area. They moved to Nine Elms near Battersea Power Station a few years back.
I love the timeguesser videos Tom, keep them coming
Nice to see you back in this game! The soldiers gear had me thinkin it wasn't Vietnam (at least based on footage and movies I've seen) Korea would be the logical next guess. It looks like you not allowing yourself to google for dates of major events, or other facts? Bold! Well done.
Love this series, please do more!
Enjoyed that. Keep doing these!
I love this format. Would love to see more
I love this series these videos weirdly got my into your channel
Pulled up the game and today's first picture was of you and welsh greg! Love this game
This mans brain astonishes me. Vast knowledge and great deductive thinking skills make for one hell of a watch.
Great series, top notch geo/history knowledge aswell!
Love these videos and all mr wizard keep it up! Currently watching during my vacation in Dominican Rep kind of want to get a good geo detective picture for you
these are some of my fav vids from you, so yeah keep this series going :)
I too think these are great fun!! I also thinks it takes a bit of a natural interest or curiosity of History of the World to be into something like this. Most people nowadays and on social platforms such as YTube aren't interested in much that happened before they drew their first breath, let alone what kind of hat the ladies were wearing in what long ago era that could be the tip off of a clue. Though, I say this as a person who really enjoys watching the restored and colorized footage from over the past century that a few channels here have made their niche. It's fascinating. It's always great fun to watch the Method of your Madness, Tom. I loved this video!
Love the timeguessr content Tom!
Awesome content Tom. Keep it coming
Hey Tom, there’s a picture of you on Timeguessr! No joke. Taken during your US trip. In front of a stadium. Not gonna spoil more, but it’s true, I promise. Thanks for introducing me to this game, loving it.
This is so much fun! Love learning with you!
Old lady Beatles fan here. Have seen that first photo a million times. Well done!
Please keep doing these I love them
I love these! I play along in my head. The Monroe one definitely tripped you up. But nice game anyway!
Love Timeguessr and your videos on it :)
Love this format 🤩
Tom, long time watcher here! I absolutely love TimeGuesser videos - don’t stop playing!
I really enjoyed this video! I'm not good at geo games but I gave this game a try myself after watching. Thanks for the fun!
Loved it when you disregarded Mostar there. Amazing stuff!
Gotta love the; 'but we are recording'
Love this game! keep it up for sure. Would also love to see you do the Wetherspoons Geoguessr map again!
10:00 you actually made me jump, Tom. "LOOK". I don't need to finish my coffee now, cheers mate :D
Its so weird watching another person trying to guess a location you know so well. That bridge is probably the most famous structure in Bosnia it was built in Ottoman times and it was reconstructed after the war. The whole city of Mostar is very beautiful and picturesque. Can't believe it made it in the video :)
Love this format!
I was choking when you picked Mostar and was impressed but when you went away... I was laughing so hard... :D
22:00 the way you say "offfsss" got me a couple times 😂😂
A good clue for the Marilyn Monroe photo (other than her being dead before Vietnam) is looking at how warmly the troops are dressed. Would be way too hot in Vietnam!
This guy is so good at this its crazy
Like he's a wizard or something!
I love these videos!❤
Yeah, I very much enjoy watching this game! Keep doing it. Somewhat of a history buff myself.
Big fan of this game, it gives a nice extra nugget to play along with as a casual viewer
"If this Fiat Panda is a sundial" is a sentence I never would have expected to hear in my life 😄
