  • Not a band, but the most overrated artist of all time has got to be Beyonce. The press treats her as the ultimate sacred cow, the most important artist of our era. Completely run of the mill commercial r&b with a shrill, unappealing voice and not even the charisma that you would expect from a major pop star. I just genuinely don't get why anyone rates her at all.

Btw XTC is genius, but Oasis wrote simple rock/pop anthems that now make for good 90s nostalgia. I don't see, where the problem is and why people have to snobbishly prove their inferiority on every corner by bringing up totally unrelated postpunk/new wave/art rock geniuses? The thing with Oasis is, Noel could get a tune out of very basic chord progressions, which is actually an underrated talent, and Liam looked cool in a parka, also they were funny in a stupid reality tv kinda way. The problem with XTC is, that Andy sounds like a barking seal and doesn't look cool in a parka (Maybe Colin could have pulled off a parka though). Again, XTC are total genius and they're criminally underrated, I agree on that, but why the need to compare?

  • I had to prepare myself for Oasis, which I knew was coming at number 1. I LOVED Oasis when they came on the scene. Their debut album 'Definitely Maybe' was such a slap in the face, it was totally unlike anything else you could hear at the time, in sound, attitude. It's hard to appreciate what they represented for a lot of people at the time. It's an incredible album. Now are they overrated? Yes they are. By the second album 'What's the Story Morning Glory' (which had all the hits and made them one of the biggest bands in the world, if only for a short time), I was still very much a fan, but I started to see the other side, the boring self-indulgent side, the caricature of themselves. It's well documented that with the second album Noel had planned for a calculated shift towards more commercial songs, a much more sellable sound (far from the punk influence from the fist album,) which worked even better than expected in terms of commercial success. It's not often mentioned how much the band changed from the first to the second album. And it became completely apparent in the 3rd album which was a big let down (other people started to see it), and I lost interest from there. They had many other albums and maintained a decent level of success for so many years while being totally uninspired, so yeah they are overrated. But the first album alone keeps them at a special place for me.

They're really not a great band - they just happened to have a sound that managed to possess a few trending-at-the-time attributes, and managed to squeeze a hit or few out of it. However, there's no real depth to their catalog, no musicianship, songwriting or lyricism to marvel, neither a broad selection of "bangers" (appealing hits) nor artistically significant or impressive deep cuts etc.

  • U2 -- a GREAT band that decided to write great songs that I don't care to hear starting in the 1990s. They helped define the REAL 1980s. They chose to be political but still managed to write amazing pop songs. And they formed in the late 1970s and never changed the line up I do believe. Similar bands that come to mind are Midnight Oil, INXS, The Church and The Call ... and even Simple Minds, Big Country (one of my all time favs) and Echo & The Bunnymen. But the band that I personally pair them up with due to where I grew up is ... R.E.M. These are all fantastic bands as far as I am concerned, regardless of whether I like a particular song or even album or not -- they did something amazing at some point in their careers, often many amazing things.

I was at the second one, on the third row from the stage, dead centre and it put me off him for life. I was offered hundreds of pounds for my ticket by several different people outside the venue, when hundreds of pounds was a lot of money and my fiancee who attended the gig with me said she'd break up with me if I took the money. The concert was probably the worst one I've ever seen by some distance. Needless to say, after the show during the 200 mile plus journey back home, not a single word was said, though I know she thought, just like I did, WHY DIDN'T WE TAKE THE MONEY.

      @goodknight37@goodknight37Ай бұрын
    • @@AndyEdwardsDrummer Wow, Hi Andy, I'm deeply honoured you've replied personally. Thank you for taking the time. Okay, so it wasn't really a very long show, he came on stage late, but the thing that really ruined it for me personally and probably for most of the audience too was that the only song he performed in it's entirety was Purple Rain at the very end. Other than that, it was one verse and a chorus here of one song and one verse and a chorus there of another song and that's the way it played out all evening. He even performed a version of 'How Much Is That Doggie In The Window!' Seriously, he did, very strange! It was all very rushed. At the time, August 1986, Seeing as M.J. was busy doing his Bad album, Prince was arguably the biggest - can I say - pop star, in the world? Purple Rain had happened and Parade was his current album, the single 'Girls And Boys' being released to coincide with the shows. The three shows had certainly been hastily arranged, almost as an after thought. A mere 4 weeks before the three gigs, there was an article in a national tabloid newspaper announcing the shows with the date and time the tickets were going on sale. I'm from the North West of England, had just passed my driving test at the time and drove down to Wembley alone in the early hours to ensure I got tickets, this was my first ever long driving journey. Around the Northampton area I started experiencing extreme driver fatigue and in not knowing the rules, I pulled over on the hard shoulder of the M1 for a sleep. I was awoken by an officer of the law a short time later and was prosecuted for the offence. When I arrived at the Wembley Arena around 4.30am the queue for the box office was already quite long. By the time the box office opened at 10am, the queue was right around the whole arena, such was the demand for tickets. Only 4 tickets per person were allowed to be purchased. This was the first time Prince had come to perform in the UK since he publicly proclaimed he would never play in this country again following the scathing reviews his 'Dirty Mind' concerts received in London (Dominion?) a few years before, so anticipation was off the scale, yet during the concert, you could tell he just didn't want to be there, it was just so apparent. Maybe those bad reviews from a few years before were still on his mind? The house lights went down, there was a huge deafening roar from the crowd, he stated to the audience: "I'm Prince and I've come to play with you!" The title track from Around The World In A Day started up, the curtains opened and for me, it was all down hill from there. Maybe we were unlucky, I know great artists have bad gigs, but boy was he off that night. All in all, just a massive anti climax, I just didn't feel it and I know I wasn't alone. After that, I didn't bother following him anymore.

Yes I have a bias and love them, but beyond that, its ludicrous saying they are "overrated". Basing your rating on how long they took to find their mature sound is just weird. Every good band started out sounding more naive when they were starting. The Beatles included Yes also sounded quite elementary on their first albums. The fact that Pink Floyd had 3 great full albums should be enough. The fact that they are so unique in their creativity should also hold weight. they didn't even borrow any sound like Led Zep did with blues. It was totally their own creation. I agree btw about The Wall. But the DSOTM, WYWH, and A albums were masterpieces. Then include many songs that stand on their own from other albums. Comfortably Numb (The Wall), or Echos from Meddle. And others from other albums They simply were and still are (which is a clue) a great band. Not over rated or under rated. In fact they never got their due when they were in their prime so any praise now is catching up.

  • Check out Fil at Wings of Pegasys, and his review of that Prince guitar solo, on Play that Funky Music. That’s all you need to know. For more, watch the video of Prince’s Gently Weeps solo, during the George Harrison concert.

  • For most people it seems calling a band overrated is just a way of saying “I’m sick of hearing about them”.

  • 23:19 - I literally said that right before you did. Not a fan on AC/DC, But appreciate them for what they are.

  • Personally, I think that there are no overrated albums and even if some bands make such an impression, it is only because there are underrated bands. So what about underrated bands?

  • It's so wrong but, I knew AC⚡DC was going to be on this list. AC⚡DC is rock.

  • What I have learned from this channel, there is not a band thats ever existed that someone could not make an argumet for as best, worst or over-rated. And perhaps convincingly.

    • Agreed. You can take literally any act in the history of music, including the Beatles, Dylan, and Zeppelin, and you can find millions of people across the world who think they suck. Music really is all subjective.

  • Andy keep on keeping on. People need to learn to lighten up and not get so personal over your video. I have to agree with you about The Stones, Led Zepellin, Prince, Red Hot Chili Peppers, AC/DC, etc, great bands. The best ones on here that people came up with are Pearl Jam and Oasis. I had that take on them back then in the 90s that they were overrated although not terrible.

    • I was surprised to see Led Zeppelin named by people, or perhaps not. Although it's a bias and prejudice that we all have with anyone we call 'overrated', I don't think we own or will have listened to a massive amount of anyone that we give that tag. But I suspect anyone who calls Led Zeppelin overrated will have only heard a handful of songs. They'll know Stairway to Heaven obviously, and surely Kashmir, Whole Lotta Love, maybe Black Dog and Rock and Roll, and base the 'overrated' opinion off that. I doubt anyone calling Zeppelin overrated will have actually listened to or own a full album. It's difficult to imagine that, but there's no accounting for people's tastes.

  • Went to see Mercury Rev once. They spent the first fifteen minutes yelling at each other (OK, they managed a couple of songs in that time, but a LOT of yelling, never found out what about). I cut my losses and went home. Didn't mind Deserters' Songs, to be fair, but stuff that for a game o' soldiers!

    • There were more Mercury Rev stickers on lampposts, etc. in downtown Manhattan in the late 90s than there were wads of gum on the sidewalk. Never seen a band more shamelessly self-promoting.

    • @@apchsiri1156 Maybe they had a 'street team' or whatever they call it by then! There'd been a lot of fuss about them in the music weeklies in the UK in the early 90s. Paid my money and got a stand-up row from 'em. I think that singer left shortly after and they reconfigured.
