Ever since the mysterious events surrounding the 1998 World Cup final, conspiracies have abounded. From Ronaldo being forced to play by Nike, to Brazil selling the World Cup, they range from fascinating to absurd.

maybe it was because of his performance against netherlands. he did a lot of running and had so many rough tackles in that game.
I remember this game. I remember watching Ronaldo standing in the line with the other players during the National Anthem. HE DIDN’T LOOK RIGHT and he hadn’t even touch the ball. He was in the BEST shape of his life physically. He was in SCINTILLATING form as a footballer for that entire tournament. I couldn’t understand what had happened to him on that day. I remember the commentators being BEWILDERED by Ronaldo’s display. It was horrible for me as a fan to watch. I never understood WHY Ronaldo played if he wasn’t feeling well, until. Brazilian Friend of mine explained something: He said, “Many people blame Zagallo for making Ronaldo play that game. But, Ronaldo is Zagallo’s Friend and he knew if he didn’t play, people would blame Zagallo even more. That’s why Ronaldo decided to play.” Listening to Ronaldo in this clip, I now understand what my friend meant and I think he’s right. Imagine if Ronaldo, the best player in the world at the time with all the amazing form he had shown in that tournament up to that point, all of a sudden was BENCHED for the final. I don’t think the mystery would be any less. One thing I loved about this World Cup was Ronaldo’s Boots. Man! Those things are the best Soccer Boots I have ever seen.

the theory knocking about from the UK media is that ronaldo had the fit, vomiting, the full 9 yards. the decision was taken to put him on the pitch as he was their star player and it would affect the team (mentally/spiritually) if he wasnt out there. So, doctors doped him up to the eyeballs and sent him out in the number 9 shirt. Unfortunately, it did more bad than good as Brazil (who in that era where an absolute freight train of talent and flair) got dicked 3-0 by France. in some if the replays i remember when the camera focused in on him, he had an almost vacant look about him, and thinking "he doesnt look right... hes not all there.. why is he on the pitch?"

That 1998 France team could not have beaten Brazil. They had useless strikers like Stephane Guivarc'h (who didn't score a goal that entire World Cup) and Christophe Dugarry. Zidane was carrying the entire team. That final France could have won by 5 goals if the useless strikers didn't miss the chances Zidane created. Fortunately for France, Brazil were unable to be at their best thanks to Ronaldo's early incident, which led to sloppy defending. I guess we'll never know what really happened.

i remember watching the 2014 world cup and specifically the game of germany vs brazil. this world cup was in brazil if i am not mistaken, and germany went on to win 7-1 or something similar. i, as a soccer player, watched and could tell the brazilians were not playing normally. players looked to be 'giving up' way before the score got out of hand. players were out of position defensively, etc. as a player watching the game, it felt like they were throwing the game.
I think some players were drugged with something that made them slow and out of it. I remember watching Oscar speak and he was literally the only player alive in that game and he was normal. David Luis sounded so off, his voice, the way he cried was just so weird. He was "slow". The keeper sounded off too, and as someone who is a Flamengo fan I know Julio Cesar well since he was our keeper for years. Like his face, voice, something was wrong with some players. He couldn't even speak properly.

They didn't throw the game. They were completely unprapred for the germany team. As a Brazilian, I can tell you that these are two different cases (1998 and 2014). In 1998, Ronaldo decided not to play moments before the finals. That triggered a suspicion. In 2014, however, the team was all ready to face Germany, but our coach was just really bad. He put up a line of 4 shooters and gave two fucks about defense. our laterals and backplayers were too oblivious. The whole team entered Mineirao (the stadium here in my city) believing they would have an easy game and "sweep" Germany. Germany had such an efficient team, organised, fast paced, errorless plays. And yet, Brazilians were just like "Germany? Nah, no worries about that one". The result was pretty much the opposite. After the 2 first goals, the players were left with no reaction and froze in the field. It's the greatest embarrassment in the history of a football team. I have a german friend, and from his standpoint, it was pretty much well deserved. Prior to 2014, we didn't treat Germany with the respect we do now. In the end, THANKFULLY, they got the championship. Argentina getting a WC in Brazil would be 1000000x worse than 7 german goals

I think that Ronaldo wouldnt have had those convulsions that surely resulted from the immense pressure and anxiety if Romario wouldve been taken to the 1998 World Cup. Romario wouldve taken alot of the weight off Ronaldos shoulders and helped him be focused mentally. Plus, they had formed one of the greatest partnerships the world has ever seen leading up to 1998, scoring and assisting truckloads of goals and winning 1997 Copa America and Confederations Cup.
