El Rito Azul is one of 3 small feeder streams that form the beginning of the Conejos River in southwest Colorado. I believe the name translates from Spanish to mean "the blue rite" and may refer to Blue Lake which is near the source of El Rito Azul. Getting to it is not so easy. You will need to park at the Three Forks TH. Get here early because this area can fill up. You then hike 2 miles through the South San Juan Wilderness. When you reach the Three Forks sign you take a left, which is South, along trial 718. After crossing the Conejos River you will then find the stream. The trail follows the stream for most of its length.

  • Hello, Dan! I enjoy watching your videos, and I am always pleased when I receive a notification that another has come out. Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico encompass some dramatically lovely country and some beautiful native flora and fauna, one of my favorites being the Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout, our southern-most ranging Cutthroat Trout. Gorgeous fish, and worth the effort to get to! Wanted to share with you and your viewers that El Rito Azul actually translates to "The Little Blue* River", the appended "ito" in Spanish being a diminutive modifier; thus Rio (river) becomes Rito ("Rio" + "ito" = Rito, or "little river", i.e., "small stream"). And yes, I saw the online translation that indicated "the blue rite." As sometimes happens with online information, it is inaccurate. So El Rito Azul means The Small Blue Stream. While I have not fished that particular El Rito Azul, I have fished others, and they have all been invariably beautiful, and aptly named. Thanks as always for your wonderful videos. Some of your locations I have visited, others I have not, but I live vicariously through all of them. Be well, my friend. *Edited: I added the "Blue"

    • Also wanted to add that I just love how you zoom in on the maps at the beginning of your videos and highlight the stream. It really helps to put the experience into context in terms of geography, watershed, and ecology, and it contributes greatly to my appreciation and enjoyment of your videos. I always pause on the map screen and dream about what that particular place and area must be like. Lots of fun! Thanks again!

    • Thank you for the correction on "The Little River". If you like beautiful rio grande cutthroats you will want to see the South Fork Conejos film scheduled to be published in 4 weeks.

    • Fantastic, Dan! I was thinking that you might have some videos of Rio Grande Cutthroats when I saw where you were fishing. I very much enjoy seeing you and Ann on your angling adventures. It is such a treat when your videos come out and I wonder to myself "Now what cool new place have those two crazy lovebirds gotten to?!" Ha ha ha! You guys are the best! Really looking forward to your South Fork of the Conejos video. Thanks for doing what you do. Take care!

    • I pretty much fished and filmed all of the streams of the Conejos watershed and will be posting them eventually.
