    • lllblisslll , I know you're not familiar with guitar, but try this: make the motion like you're picking back and forth across a string at a relatively slow pace. Now, try it again but do it twice as fast. If you downpick everything you have to bring your pick across the string twice as many times as alternate picking would require. It without a doubt causes you to hit the string harder, so that's essentially why downpicking is better for rhythm. That and your wrist is naturally faster on the downpick than picking up.
