A max update for you all! A lot has been going on since our last update on all the horses so I wanted to let you all know what’s been going on and what’s happened! It’s a little different video and I hope you enjoy getting the update!

It really just makes common sense to have their shoes off while they are not being used, during the winter. It allows their feet time to spread and become healthy again without the restriction of a shoe. I have transitioned fully to Barefoot now and I douse hoof boots When I ride on rocks. I think you’re doing a great job with Max. Good luck.

My Lusitano/TB cross had very good strong hoofs, he was shod only for eventing season, May to October (Canada, you have to wait for the snow to melt). We had good footing in our indoor and outdoor rings. I think that this kept his feet healthier. He loved having the shoes put on in May, he knew an Event and Cross Country was coming up. Love the way you know your horses.

Aw Max is so sweet. I’m glad to hear that everything is going well. There is no one size fits all answer to anything. Everything is just a tool and what some horses need others don’t. You just do what you think is best for your horses. If you need video ideas we would love a house update. Also if you want to talk about your Land Rover jeep I would love to know more about it. I think it’s just the coolest looking tow vehicle.

You're a fantastic owner Ashley, you should take pride in how well you care for your beautiful animals. They are lucky to have an owner who is so invested in their wellbeing and doesn't just see them as a vessel to compete on. It's amazing how much shoes affect them, we took back shoes off the horse I ride and he was so uncomfortable and sore in his back - safe to say they went straight back on once we realised the cause!

My goodness what a significant improvement to the angles and the heels are far less underrun... The initial foot confirmation would cause some strain even if just subclinically. It used to be normal for horses to have shoe free time each year, hunters in the summer and competition horses in the winter when on holiday

It's always worth it to keep them healthy, sometimes we have to put our preconceptions aside and do what's best for our horses, he's looking well, glad you've had good advice.

Agree absolutely, what a good plan to video before and after vecause the results are there plain as day. I bought a piny recently.. always liked her.. she nearly got put down with lami last summer but now she is doing around 4 miles a day, mostly roads, very happily. I bought some boots but it's like carrying an umbrella.. as long as you've got one you don t need it! Also agree about haylage.. it's excellent feed but they can't digest it properly. I find it's ok as long as they're having grass or hay for part of the day

Just writing to say I had the same issue my tb, she was slightly lame (barely) but had heat and inflammation in her front right, thought it was a tendon injury but after an x-ray it showed she had bad foot balance that was making her lame from bad shoeing. She ended up needing special shoes with a heel wedge and is completely sound now.

I had an OTTB who was so low-heeled on his right front that he was a bit unbalanced-he had also bowed a tendon on that leg at the track. We shoed him with the least thick wedge pad possible. It took two years, and he was. never out of light work and had daily turnout. He slowly grew more heel ( or maybe it’s more accurate to say that his heel bulb wasn’t being squashed anymore so the tissue rebounded, and his front heels evened up). He got daily hoof supplements in his feed. He also got a lot of chiro work, as racing had caused his whole body to be uneven. We had an open-minded farrier throughout this process, and we never shod him behind because he got turned out other people’s horses. It’s a slow, gradual process to get them right. Good luck! Sounds like you’re on the right path.

I am of course so very sorry that Max has been unwell, but as ever you have this covered, for the best interests of Max, he could not be in better hands, I am in awe of how you methodically think of him (as you do all the horses) and what will work for you, drawing in expertise, you can do no more. I wish Max a full recovery and hope to see him out and about once again very soon.

My horses had barefoot, nothing wrong with it. I knew a horse that had glue on shoes. Just like us, barefeet feel good sometimes! Good luck!

Love how your horses' well-being is your first priority & seems to me you are being very sensible in your treatment. Even if the alternatives don't help they are certainly harmless & you won't know if you don't try. Acupuncture may be helpful too. The hoof shape also seems really significant---that flare does not look right at all, esp. for a horse who competes at his level. And the gut health, too---isn't he the one who poos the minute you put him in the trailer? All or any of those things could be significant. But he is clearly pain-free & happy, except for being a bit bored (toys? tricks? classical music? algebra?). He is clearly quite fond of attention from you & has a lot to say! Perhaps you could give him the job of narrating your videos!

Thank you for the Max update, I had missed him and am sad he has some issues but glad he is not in pain and you have a plan.. It sounded like the farrier was shaping the hoof to the shoe instead of the shoe to the hoof. I mean you said his heels had spread and a loss of cushioning due to the shoes? His hooves look harder barefoot, darker color denser and more supportive, and careful hard surface work (walking) can further harden his hooves without jarring too much... Sounds like you have a plan and no hurries so carry on and let us see Max at times, even just shorts in the field or whatever you have time to share as the season gets going...

Mine are all barefoot. Have had 2 of them with front shoes at times, but they do really well barefoot with trail boots on paved or rocky ground. I'm in Northern California, and most horses just have fronts or are barefoot with some form of trail boots. I have the cavalo's. Some people use scoot boots, and I have used glue on shoes at times. The glue shoes stay on about 2 weeks and are susceptible to water weakening the epoxy but are nice if you need short term shoe like support. My horses are primarily for dressage, but they do trail riding as well. We have lots of hard rocky ground on many of the trails in the mountain areas alongside the valley where I live. My young horse has been struggling with ulcers, so I have lots of supplements to support his gut health. His feet are excellent, which is nice, but there is always something to deal with 😂

We always only put shoes on the front only and pulled them in the winter. Also, if it's the foot with the white sock, that hoof is going to be softer which can cause leg issues

Max is so sweet. It almost looks like with shoes his heels were being trimmed down too low and too much toe was left? Maybe that’s just me coming from the western world but I am SUPER proud and happy you are taking every route you can for him!

Great call. Good decision. I have one that came with awful front feet. 6 months barefoot in hoof boots has been the making of him. He's back in shoes now and comfortable again! Fingers crossed Max will be out and competing again soon 🤞🏻

Just for perspective, as someone from Canada and competing with horses my whole life, I have never had a horse wear shoes - I'm not opposed to them, just never had a horse demonstrate the need. Now that I have been watching vlogs from the UK, I have noticed kind of a cultural thing there -- not sure if it's accurate but there seems to be a very "traditional way of doing things" compared to perhaps North American trends of more openness to new ways of doing things. Anyway, I wish you and Max the best and love watching ❤

My horse had two front pedal bone fractures after we got him and then “unknown” intermittent lameness for the year following his full recovery. We went barefoot and haven’t looked back since. Barefoot is best; do the reading, look into the case studies etc and you’ll see!

Bowen is lovely and the nutrition and holistic approach is fab. He obviously has inflamm condition which you could research what can set that up in certain animals. There’s plenty of info out there.

I totally agree with this. My 3* horse loves his shoes, same with my young horse. Not that they mind being barefoot in the winter but definitely prefer their shoes. My younger mare that I brought on as a project LOVES being barefoot. I took off her shoes because her feet were so bad from the person I bought her from. But she has totally told me she loves the barefoot lifestyle (at least for now until she needs studs 😂)

Speaking as an owner who has been through this although my mare was intermittent lame - her shoes were taken off but this was a big negative for us so now she has bar shoes on and has been the soundest she’s ever been but she did have a lot of abscess issues thankfully that’s has all now subsided - good luck with it all

Wow, just paused this halfway to say, his feet are very low in the heel, long in the toe, no surprise he has had inflammation 😩. Your barefoot person has Done a Good job in his rehab. I’ve been through this too! Can I advise to go back to your vet and get X-rays of all 4 feet to check his Navicular/ pattern angles. Look into the deep tendon that runs down the leg and around the navicular bone, this gets stressed when the angles are so out like Max’s xx. Good luck 🤞🏼

I’ve got one of each. I think barefoot hooves look healthier generally. I did the same, mine was going to have some time out after surgery and treatment so I took his shoes off and he transitioned really well.

Don't give up Ashley and don't let anyone disuade you. It's false economy getting horese up and running in the fastest possible time and always has been. Hence the reasom so many people find themselves with supposedly sound horses that just weeks away from purchase face really expensive vet bills!!! I think when you get to my age, you will be a leading equine care specialist. Keep going. Max will repay you, I'm sure 👍👍👍🥰

wondering if you ever looked into magnetic therapy boots? i've never used them but i've seen alot of people say that they're good for swelling, not tryna be like "what youre doing is worthless if you dont do this" cause clearly what ypuve done has already improved his overall health, but i think if god forbid the swelling does come back it'd be something to look into to see if it'd even be suitable, glad to know max isnt lame and gets out though he sure looks happy to just be there

Well done with what you’re doing for Max. I’ve a horse who had an injury & is now happily barefoot eventing up to 100, qualifying for BD dressage champs & CT champs & loving life! I’m fortunate to have farmland hacking but should I do more road work or he’s hacking just after a trim I use Scootboots. Looking forward to seeing Max’s progress & well done for pursuing alternatives before surgery 😊

You are having a brain fart day ! I changed my profile name but I think I'm your Number One fan :) (from Aussie) Is your arena 40 m or 60 m ? If it is 40...do you find it a good size. I'm pressed for room on my property due to the undulation and wondering if a 40 would be ok. Moving from a flat property to an undulating one sure has financial drawbacks !
20x40m is the standard size here- my arena at Zeb’s yard is only 33m long because of space and it’s a bit short

I would have all 4 feet X-rayed to make sure the PA and bones are aligned correctly. Barefoot is great if everything is correctly aligned. Toe looked too long and heel under run when you showed first barefoot pictures.

I am living this right now with my ottb's ... one of mine is now barefoot and Ive been told to leave him alone for a year. Oh gosh, it is so hard to do that. Another of mine has glue on EasyCare Versa shoea and it has been a LIFECHANGER for him. Barefoot is best. When ready, you might consider glue on so its not concussion of aluminum and covers the entire hoof with a thick poly shoe or whatever it is made from ...
