Rumble is Earth Bending in VR and it's Exhausting

Rumble is a great little VR game. Earth bending in VR is a great concept, Rumble gameplay is like being teleported into Avatar. If Avatar only had earth bending in it. And being in VR is what makes it fun, but it's also why it's such a workout. I can imagine I will only be earth bending for a little while longer, but it was a fun experience while I could keep my heart beating.

  • The fact that you have to struggle just to learn to earth bend feels like a genuine Avatar simulation. This is awesome!

    • it's the same as learning forms. you have to be precise and accurate. it will especially be exhausting if you're not fit like a martial artist. i've seen so many people test for a new belt and fail because their stance isn't correct or their hand position isn't on point. someone with very little mind-body connection is bound to fail.

Sorry that you have negative expectations tied to people asking for games that disabled people can play. • I had an idea for a game like this a while back. The goal was to let people experience bending in VR, but it would also double as teaching you a martial art, because every bending style is based on a form of martial art. Airbending is Baguazhang, Waterbending is Tai Chi, Earthbending is Hung Ga Kung Fu, and Firebending is Northern Shaolin Kung Fu. The idea was that the game would progressively teach you real forms by showing you with an AI teacher, and then reinforce things like balance, speed, and positioning through a system called chi. Basically the better you did, the more powerful and precise your attack would be. There would be an open world you could explore, of course, but there was also one thing I thought would be really cool, a power scale. You could duel people at regular levels, of course, but then, if you wanted to get spicy, you could increase both players' power levels extremely to get a result remeniscent of the Last Agni Kai. There were two things holding this idea back though. The first was that I wanted to make use of the Index's finger tracking, but didn't want to exclude Quest users, and the other was that for some of the more intense moves you see in the show (specifically anything that takes you off of solid ground, it would be required for players to use another concept I drew up for VR, which was a slidemill similar to the CatWalk, but designed to hold you off the ground when you're in the air in game, while still giving you full degrees of control. That would limit the amount of the game that people could actually play dramatically and it kind of shot the idea down the moment it began.

I remember one time during MMA I tried to make a wall into a punch and I got grappled instantly having to tap out the reason I did the wall into a punch because of the dopamine that I experienced before when I had just learned my first combo in beta what included a rock jump into the earthquake type when you land and hit the target.

  • I want to play this game if I have a VR setup. Just after getting a yellow belt in Tae Kwon Do did I start to learn that marital arts are like a fighting game where you can practice one technique repetitively before tying everything together into a single fluid action. Shooting rocks with a certain form is all about practice just like perfecting a certain form. My best advice is to practice some forms every day for at least an hour and then rest for something else on the computer. If you keep playing for more, you’re just gonna get more tired.
