The funny thing is a clock is actually an extremely taboo gift for Chinese because it’s a symbol of death, i.e you want that person to die.

I was still friends with my ex for a while and for his birthday I got him a comfort bird wood carving kit (bcs he wanted to get into wood carving but didn't have any resources for big projects) and for my birthday the following month, he got me soap, acne face wash and candles. i felt so fucking insane for being upset over his gifts but i can now rest easy knowing i got the superior gift and he did indeed get a symbolically weird gift.
