Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene vowed on Wednesday to bring a motion to remove her fellow Republican Mike Johnson from the House speakership, a situation where he might have to rely on the votes of Democrats to stay in power.
“I think every member of Congress needs to take that vote and let the chips fall where they may,” Taylor Greene told reporters at a news conference.
Taylor Greene speculated that Democrats who voted for Johnson would face consequences from their constituents for their support of a Republican during the November elections.
“I can’t wait to see Democrats go out and support a Republican speaker," she said, adding, "I think that’ll play well, I'm excited about it."
Johnson was elected speaker by House Republicans in October after a contentious process that began with the removal of his predecessor, Rep. Kevin McCarthy. This week, House Democrats promised to give Johnson votes to remain speaker, arguing that removing him would create distractions to governance.
