  • I think one of the things that frustrate me recently with the MCU is how inconsistent it is with its "age-check". Moon Knight's afraid of getting too violent, but Doctor Strange MoM gets to have bisection, heads blown up, body horror contortions and disturbing imagery just fine in a PG-13 setting. Meanwhile, Deadpool 3 is confirmed to keep the R-rating, mostly because Ryan Reynolds and his team fought so hard for it, so there's literally no reason for Moon Knight to tiptoe so much on the violence department.

    • The “eating shit” trope works best when a hero is in the developmental or early years of being a hero. It works best with the grounded and technological hero’s like Batman and Iron Man very well since many people see technology as a multi step process and taking many failures so people very much expect that. I think that’s the best way to do it is to either have the hero fully rely on their own tech or just starting off being a hero.

    • Ethnicity as well as religion and Oscar is even ethnically Jewish, but the West tends to view Jewishness as only a religion parallel to Christianity, hence not considered diverse. Hence, Disney had to give the character another supplemental (akshual) diversity point by being Latino. Coincidentally, the actor happened to be both. Plus, focusing too much on the Jewish aspect might have upset any anti Zionists along the largely Arab fan base. The Egyptian director had already been slammed by viewers for daring to make a film about Arabs and Israelis.

Spider-Man is bumbling funny man, but street level. Star-Lord is bumbling funny man, but space. Now Moon Knight is also bumbling funny man, but with DID. In the comics, it actually feels like these guys are radically different people, which makes it all the more fun when they clash or team-up. • @@aghitsaplane4262 That's because the people behind Moon Knight tv show were exactly how you described them. The writer of the Moon Knight series "Jeremy Slater" has stated that he never really liked Moon Knight and always thought he was a Batman ripoff. He also felt Moon Knight doesn't have any good villains, so he created "Arthur Harrow" as an MCU original villain. Kevin Feige on the other hand, wanted to go even further with the "Let's make Moon Knight like Deadpool" thing and originally wanted to base the character on 2011 Bendis version of Moon Knight. A goofy comic series where Moon Knight pretends to be Spider-man, Captain America, and Wolverine. A comic series that sold poorly, that most Moon Knight fans hated, and was eventually retcon/forgotten. .....It was also the first comic to introduce the concept of giving Moon Knight "Dissociative Identity Disorder", instead of Moon Knight just being an evil man who used to kill innocent people and now hides from his past with his new disguises and a superhero identity. Slowly going insane because of his guilt. Bendis also gave Moon Knight D.I.D. back in a 2005 Ultimate Spider-man comic, but that wasn't canon. In the end, Jeremy Slater was only interested in making this show for "Mental Health Representation" and while at it he openly admitted to trying to cram the Dracula Moon Knight meme into the script. However Marvel wouldn't let him because Blade is going to be introducing Vampires. Meaning we might get the meme referenced in the Midnite Sons movie or some shit.

  • I genuinely did like the show, but everything you said here stands true, and would've only served to improve it. Steven is cool as he is, but the decision to make him a complete goof and then magically competent at the end along with tying him to Mr. Knight was weird, the boiling down of Jake to just being the Evil Alter and being an essential plot point that ends up just being bait for future projects instead of fleshed out in this show is just a really annoying choice when looking at the series in a vacuum (as the creators themselves intended), the misuse or just lack of use of key characters felt weird, the absolute underplaying and undertilization of Marc's Jewish Heritage and belief (and especially his father seemingly not being a Rabbi in this version, considering the changes with his mother) was one of the biggest missed opportunities to tell a really profound story that I've seen in a Marvel project. Plus, Kevin didn't do the show any favours by just straight up lying about how violent the show would be; like it's just clear as day that this show is not as gruesome as he made it out to be. I really did like a lot about the show, and I'd even say it was good. But, it could've been *great* and all they would've had to do was make the show that Kevin initially described this to be, one that didn't pull back, and wasn't afraid to portray some very ambiguous and disturbing subject matter to its audience without watering any of it down for them. But really, I just hope the comics keep doing their own thing, because this current run is peak moon knight, and I would hate for it or any of the runs that follow it to have to become as safe or constrained as the show.

It really does seem like the MCU is afraid to get more mature and touch on certain subjects because it might scare away people that are used to the usual MCU tone and feel. We used to have the Netflix shows for that darker, more mature take on the MCU, but all of those were canceled and who knows if we’ll ever see that again in the MCU. Moon Knight really would have benefited if was taken a bit more seriously and really delve into topics it didn’t.

On top of that, I also have Bipolar Disorder and deal with a lot of personal trauma- so reading about Marc, Jake, and Steven left me genuinely like for once, I was understood in some level. It helped me to process and understand a lot of myself, and MK comics help me connect more with my father. On top of all this, I even relate heavily to that aspect of trauma shocking and distorting our feelings of faith. So when I watch the show and feel this impossibly sanitized version of the character, I just felt... Empty. Or angry. • As someone who liked this show, and watched it with their family I can definitely say there is a degree of...Simplification to the character, but also not unexpected of the MCU. I think people saying its fresh and original are correct in the way that the show doesn't really feel like typical Marvel or Disney plots, even if its a lil toothless. As an example I was in Disney Land back when the final episode was airing and rewatched all the previous episodes with my parents in the hotel. And our talks about mental health and multiple personality disorders was interesting, perhaps even more so than the way the show had illustrated them. Which maybe that's what people are taking away from the show is more concepts than strictly whats being put to screen? I know I liked it and I'm a huge moon knight fan of the comics. Not to say I want this to be the end all be all for the character, because that's not true. I think the comparisons to Fist of Konshu at least make it clear to me that the MCU did the basic idea of mystisim super hero a lil better than those early runs. The unfortunate reality is I never expected Moon Knight to be like himself really, it just seemed like too complicated of a character to bring to screen without alienating people from the character and was MCUified. But I also don't think those concessions were a bad thing in this instance either. Comics, and by extension books as a whole just have a lot more room to say and do weird or unique concepts that most other media wont tackle. Having an easy to understand approximation of the character for people who want to get into the comics is kind of refreshing. My mom, who has never read comics just picked up Moon Knight From the Dead to read at work because shes interested to learn more about the character. Granted I will also admit however that based on prior MCU track records Moon Knight might become a lil more toned down in modern comics as a result of this show. We can hope otherwise but, that's probably the truth. But I still personally think this is probably one of the better MCU TV shows, and projects as of late. Im sorta sick of super hero tv shows and movies as a whole outside of stuff coming from other countries, but I thoroughly enjoyed what this show had to offer just on the pure basis that it wasn't like other projects. For as watered down as Moon Knight was, I think the show still has merit in introducing people to the character and getting new fans into his books.

All that time spent invested just got wasted." And I'm not saying this to just dunk on you and dash ur hopes. I genuinely just don't think it's worth going through that and putting on this blinders to deny reality just for a dumb show. The Warren Ellis run is short but fantastic and where we first get Mr. Knight, and the Peter Woods and Cullen Bunn runs that followed are also alright, worth a read. I haven't read the original Doug Moench run yet (mostly out of laziness) but I'd still give it a read since it's the og. The current Jed MacKay run is absolutely fantastic so far though you need to read Age of Khonshu to fully understand it (or a summary at least). And finally, there's a ongoing 4 part mini series called Black White and Red which is just a bunch of short stories using only black white and red. Also I've heard the Charlie Huston one is good too but I haven't read it yet. Hope that helps!

Jake being functionally a deus ex machina plot device to offscreen kill people and framed heavily as an ~evil alter~ by the subtext of this rather than the protector via any means- violence, charisma, "doing what needs to get done"- is equal parts bad writing and offensive, stereotypical writing. "This time it's the END OF THE UNIVERSE!" The best spidey comics in my opinion are the low key street level ones. That's why I still like the lizard and why I think ASM messed up his character, and that's also why I liked the new Batman movie. Gives them more time to flesh out the word and characters, plus they don’t have the same “grandness” even as someone like Batman. Just comparing the Daredevil television show and the Ben Affleck movie (granted they were numerous problems with it) where it feels rushed. Actually, one of the reasons why Daredevil was sent to TV was because Marvel Studios wasn’t interested in making an r-rated, smaller budget movie as Drew Goddard stated and I believed it work in favor of the character. I actually think thats why Marvel Studious has had a lot issues with their shows because they’re use to making big blockbusters rather than telling serialized, smaller stories for so long.
