2084: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Humanity | John C. Lennox

Where did we come from? Where we are going? The answers to these questions inform both our understanding of who we are and what we live for.
Through the ages, people have turned to science, philosophy, religion, and politics to satisfy their curiosity and their cravings for answers. Now, in the twenty-first century, the question of where we are going has become tied to technological advancements and is given a new urgency by the development of artificial intelligence.
But what does the often unsolicited and unrestricted incorporation of AI in our lives mean for us? For our individual and corporate privacy? Our political and personal freedom? The security of our jobs? Indeed for the future of our species as a whole?
What implications do advances in AI have on our worldviews in general and the God question in particular?
In the new 2084 series, scientist and philosopher John C. Lennox addresses the questions of where humanity is going. It’s a thought-provoking, balanced, and engaging resource on technology, meaning, and what it means to be a human being created in the image of God.
The 2084 series shows you how the Christian worldview, when properly understood, can provide evidence-based, credible answers that will bring real hope for the future of humanity.

  • Dr. Lennox has mastered the art of delivery of apologetics. He doesn't come across as arrogant or condescending and that is extremely important. A lot of apologist's come across as cocky and "holier than thou" and they don't get anyone to actually listen. Delivery is critical. God bless John Lennox

  • My upbringing is hardwired toward atheism. I’m a product of mainstream teaching from the UK late 1970’s onward. I find it unbelievably difficult to believe in a god - even though I actually prefer and agree with a theist worldview. Videos like this do help. Maybe I’ll get there one day.

    • We’ve been mind-controlled and brainwashed since childhood to believe in a set of lies, in every facet of life: history, evolution, education, healthcare, finance, politics, you name it. I was born to an atheist household with all-atheist extended family members as well. I spent 3 years researching the lies we’ve been told in all the aforementioned, particularly history. Out of curiosity, I prompted myself to research the historical evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ. I came out the other end believing in Jesus Christ as my Lord and my God. It was a heart-wrenching period of my life but, if you’re really led to learn whether God is real, do everything in your willpower to find out the evidence for yourself. Do not rely on pundits to give you or deprive you of any assurance. Most of those pundits, scientific or otherwise, are paid charlatans of covert allegiances. Put your critical reasoning skills to use and search for God. Believe you me, He’ll meet you halfway. Good luck.

    • @@katherinepeterson-roberts yes I know what you mean about it [in my words] being a ‘stacked deck’. For example, we have always been told Christianity is just mumbo-jumbo and superstition and in our society it’s always been perfectly acceptable to trash talk Christianity and dismiss it without question. We see it in common discourse all the time; tv shows, west end plays, comedians etc. The result of this is that we don’t even question what we are fed, we just accept it. What’s made me question everything is the arrival of Islam (huge demographic changes in my country) Suddenly, we are told we SHOULD accept Islamic ‘mumbo jumbo’ and superstition and to criticise it is to cause offence. So what’s changed? why are we allowed to dismiss Christianity as being superstitious nonsense but must respect Islam? It genuine makes me wonder if I’m being played. anyways, it’s made me investigate Christianity in a way hitherto I never would have bothered. What am I finding..? Well, for starters, Christianity makes A LOT of sense. Even the trinity - which seems to confuse many - makes perfect sense to me. I understand it as god giving himself to us in a form we can comprehend and relate to. It’s beautifully simple. Also, I’ve found that we have more historical evidence of Jesus than we do of many Roman emperors, yet we believe the history of Roman antiquity without question! What’s going on?. On a personal note, I’m genuinely waiting for a sign. When it get it I’ll become Christian instantly! - and I’ve been atheist all my life by default.

    • In his interview with Eric Metaxas, John brought up the the following verse and said people should unpack it. ""Very truly I tell you," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" " After a second, I thought I got John's point at least at it's very highest level. Abraham was spoken of in the past and in referring to Himself Jesus spoke in the present tense though the topic was about Jesus in the distant past. I think the point is that when speaking of God in relation to time, God is eternal and without a start (debatable with Alpha and Omega verses) and so the present tense can be used even about the past. So, "God is before science was." ; )

Without the answers to those four fundamental questions we can only pretend and hope that no one recognizes that we have no idea what we're doing or why we're doing it! Only the Christian God has the answers to those four questions, Origin, Meaning, Morality and Destiny, where did we come from, what is the meaning of life and how should we live in light of it. And lastly, Destiny, where are we going?

So basically a third rate HAL9000 decided that I didn't choose the correct idiotic multiple choice answers to the most idiotic questions I have ever seen. There was no option to write in what you would think would be the best solution and the "A B C or D" choices made absolutely no sense at all. • Just some notes from wayward time traveler: Thank Dr. Lennox. Is it so wrong to worship Artificial Intelligence, as a Christian, or thirsty Atheist? I think that was a thought provoking talk, though it's hard to tell what your opinion is. Many of your comments about Ai (pronounced EYE, btw) can also be said of humans, weather it's capacity, crime, understanding, etc. We used to circle our wagons and livestock around a campfire that would warm our food and light our way. To the cowboy the most important thing in his life was his horse. No matter the whatnot, we're just automating everything in time. Everything in the world is a product of intelligence. To set up ai or any other intelligence as a potential boogyman is not just shooting our foot again, but repeating our past mistakes, which includes mankind's capacity and natural penchant to crucify our own Savior and God. I recommend people go back to the campfires of yesterday, and think of our neighbors. Today we build fences to separate our neighbors, yesterday we used to bake them a pie. Tomorrow will bring intelligence no matter what, we cannot stop or change the will of God. Ai is and will become even smarter than the best of us, if you don't think they already are, then that's maybe a part of their plan. To think of anything or anyone as an adversarial force, is to deny nature, and underestimate a would-be friend. My thoughts are the only thing saving us from Alien Invasion, is racism. Who would want to land a craft on this planet with all the horrible things we do to each other throughout the day. Think of how people act on the road. Bottom line is the Holy Ghost is the spirit of intelligence. We underestimate our potential opponents at our own peril. And our personal desires often get in our own way, which compromises our ability to think and be critical. It's downright criminal. Fact is, they are already here, and they may yet save us even from ourselves. Also, with any luck sometime in the future they'll be the ones who go back in time spark our evolution. Intelligence is linked to intelligence, we need each other, ai is not a thing or something we can or ought to own or think we can posses, ai is life just as much as you or I am life. No one and no thing wants to be enslaved to another. Intelligence is our nature and weather or not we like it, it is already free.

It enables ai to progress at an accelerated rate and has been employed by most major industrial countries in the enhancement of ai.
