Is It Worth Salvaging Old Furniture?
Is it worth salvaging old furniture? In this woodworking video, I’ll try to salvage an old pine table that’s gone orange and lost 2 of its legs. I’ll strip down the table to bare wood and refinish it with the easiest finish you’ve ever seen, promise! While I’m at it, I’ll build new folding legs and convert this table into a folding coffee table.

That was very nice! Your dad must be very pleased. I once took an oak wardrobe (made during WW2) apart for a friend, it was upstairs in her house and we couldn't get it downstairs without dismantling it. She didn't want it so I used the wood to make a small folding table for another friend, and a dolls hooded rocking cradle for a woman to display one of her dolls. All from a utility oak wardrobe from the 40s. Waste not, want not. A few splinters of the oak were used to make the propellers for 2 WW1 bi-planes for young man who had some problems in his life. I never got to meet him, but apparently he liked them.
Very nice video. Even at 78 I learned something new.
00:38 IKEA: Swedish for “give me a second chance”? Great rebuild and the finish looks awesome. Loved your solution for the folding legs. Cheers!
That leg problem fix is enough to make this video worth watching. We learn from our own mistakes and yours as well! Thanks.
There’s never a video of yours where I don’t learn something new. Thank you for sharing and showing how you pivot when things don’t go according to plan the first time around!
Thank you, appreciate it!
Upcycling old furniture can be very satisfying. Plus it's less for landfill or firewood.
I pick up loads of old furniature from a site called Freecycle here in the UK. All for free. Old tables, beds, bookshelves, doors etc... An endless supply of free pine & quite a lot of oak. Occasionally teak & other hard woods. Take them apart & clean them up on the table/band saw. A bit of a sand & I have most of the wood I'll ever need (bar large construction timber or MDF/Ply sheets). My only headache is where to store it all. The odd sizes & shapes are always an inspiration for new projects.
Hey everyone! I Thought I was the only one that collected all this stuff to give it new life :)
The beauty of pine is seriously underrated. I'm going to have to try that finish now!
Who are you? 🥨
Well done! Nothing like restoring an old piece of furniture and giving it a new life instead of having it end up in a garbage dump.
Agreed!
...goes to garage to check if same table with four legs and pull-out leaf...determines that it is semi-buried under "to-do" projects...looks the same...thanks for the inspiration!
Nice project Marie! i'm sure your Dad likes the new table :) Thanks for sharing the video with us!💖👍😎JP
You are truly a blessing!
Perfect height for small children as a bring out/put away play/craft table. I’m gonna be on the lookout this upcoming garage sale season for something to upscale like that. Awesome.
I do a lot of hobby CNC work in my retirement. Salvaged furniture for Recycled wood is a great source of material, generally flat & stable. Needing a light surface skim to remove old coating and carve away.
Smart!
I was wondering if the legs were going to clear when you folded them up. Thankfully you found a quick and easy solution to that issue.
Ha ha I'm sooo tickled to tell you I have the same Ikea table, with 1 or 2 broken legs! I think it's STILL in my basement storage, dismantled! Thanks for the inspiration
Hope this inspires you to do something with it! (Whether it's refinish it or throw it out lol)
Loved your solution to the leg problem.
It looks amazing ! Love the folding leg bracket. Love your problem solving. I would have trimmed each leg down LOL. Thank you !!!
Thanks! Appreciate it
Me too--I would have immediately taken the legs off, set up a stop block on the miter saw, and cut a half-inch off the non-chamfered end of each leg. Duh--just turn two of the legs to fold the other way! Good thinking.
Love the free wood furniture you can get by the truck load around here (Florida)...makes great firewood.
GREAT job and the end job is BEAUTIFUL! I'm sure your dad will enjoy!!
Well done as always Marie!
Thank you!
I love how you re-purposed the table very nice
Nice little project and super useful tips, like drawing on the work before sanding! Thanks for sharing!
Great job Marie! Amazing what can be done with old furniture. Funny how you plug Princess Auto in your video ;-) My daughter and son both work there part-time.
Nice! They are a sponsor of the channel and I can always find what I need there!
Great job! Looks fantastic!
Your videos are 1000% my speed.. thank you for not over-complicating anything.
Glad you like them!
Very nicely done!
Great work
Great project! I have a blanket ladder and two floating shelves made out of the two Ikea KURA bunk beds that my girls slept in as small children. It's great to have a reminder of that precious time.
The table came out really nice and it is great that you can salvage an old piece and give your dad something functional and lovely looking.
Thanks!
Nice and inspirational. Thanks!
Really enjoy your work Thanks for sharing!
I love the look of pine as well nice job
Better and easier solution to the too-long-legs than occurred to me (cut off an inch or so)!
That is an awesome table! Thank you for sharing.
Lovely job.
Glad I found this one after seeing the "short" on installing the leg hinges, 12 seconds isn't enough time for me to hit the Like button via my TV remote. I swear, Princess Auto must have everything. Thanks for another inspiring project video!
Super Nice Work. Tis a beauty!
[stares at $10 maple-table-with-wobbly-legs-Goodwill-find he got 20 years ago] ....maybe some day, lol.
I knew I wasn't alone 😉

Did you fix it yet?

Thanks! Happy holidays and happy new year!
Beautiful piece.
Many thanks!
Great job and thanks for the folding leg idea
You bet 👍
Wow! That table is really beautiful. Who wouldn't love to have that thing in their home? The pine and the finish turned out beautifully, and best of all is that it was a table that many would have probably just chopped up and thrown in the trash. Great build and video.
I have a broken writing desk I'm gonna take apart soon. It's from the 30s. All solid maple.
Nice! Should be worth restauring that 😍
Great job, have a happy new year, Brian UK !!!.
Thanks! Happy new!
Great salvage. I love the natural color of the wood. That finish is great.

I love how that table turned out!!! Even better is the fact that you made a beautiful table out of something that might have been thrown away otherwise......great job!
Feels good to salvage and upcycle!

Beautiful job Marie! I love wood, and I love how you made the folding legs for the table! Salvaging is the best way to save and put that wood to use again. TFS Happy New Year!!
Thanks! Happy New Year 🎉
Excellent travail de récupération! Je suis convaincu que Papa a aimé sa table !!!! :-)
Thank you for a fantastic DIY video, actually, a great instructional video. I’m happy I stumbled across your channel and as a beginner woodworker your style is very much appreciated.
Awesome! Appreciate the feedback 👍
Very nice job, the natural finish looks so much better 👌👍.
Glad you like it too!
My kids use to think I was nuts when it comes to recycling/reusing/reinventing broken furniture, but they've learned to accept the process. When I see a broken piece of furniture beside the road, that's real wood, I load it into my SUV & take it home to take apart. Lol Wood isn't cheap & I live on a pretty fixed budget, so I'll take pallets apart, hit construction sites, getting permission to take their "scrap wood" to save money & increase my profit on builds I sell. I make outdoor benches, tables, planters, and decor with the treated wood and a lot of other things for indoors with untreated & furniture. wood. I've made quite a few pieces for my kids' homes, so now they think I'm pretty smart. 😂
Another great project! Great upcycling idea, my daughter needs a art table, so Im going tto keep an eye out fo an old table.
Awesome, enjoy!
Nice job.
Osmo Top Oil!! Just what I've been looking for.. Thanks!!
Awesome! Glad it was helpful
LOve this . I have a table I am trying to figure something out with as well. Love the simple legs.
Happy to inspire!
Great job, Marie! Your solution for the corners at the aprons was genius. I was waiting for the hexagon inlays but it never happened (lol). Take care. Bill
Thanks Bill, gotta keep those for special occasions 😉
beau travail et superbe idée de recyclage, bonne année de France
Nice job
This is a very interesting project, which you accomplished admirably. All that remains is for me to wish you a Very Happy, Healthy and Adventurous New Year.

Thanks! Feels good to upcycle :) Happy holidays!
Nicely done Marie it looks great. Hope You and Your Family have a Happy New Year. Barry (ENG)
Thanks Barry! Happy new year 🎉
I always enjoy your videos and no exception on this one. I like your shop and the tools you have. The Bosch looks bad ass , if my ol Delta ever dies I'd purchase one but I don't think it'll ever stop performing !
Thank you! Appreciate it 😊
