DO MOON PHASES AFFECT BLUEGILL SPAWNING ACTIVITY? The "Strawberry Moon" Bite!

We fished the day after the "Strawberry Moon" of June 14, 2022 to see if bluegill spawning activity would increase/decrease according to the moon phase. Old timers and biologists alike claim that the bluegill spawn peaks during full moon phases throughout the summer. I have long believed that this is true in some, but not all, of the waters I fish. Let me know what you think and if you have seen similar results during the full-moon periods in the waters you fish.

  • Love to get a small stringer for the frying pan. Don't take more than we can eat. You're a good fisherman. 😊

  • I’d have to put some of them in the bucket man. I guess you don’t want to offend the airheads.

  • there are full moons in the winter and they don't spawn. it's all about water temps. it's may in michigan.

    • The initial spawn for most sunfish species is indeed dictated by water temperature, with bluegills around 70 F. I have caught bluegills and red ears , on beds, in April, May, June and July in my state of Maryland. However, not all water bodies exhibit this trait. In many waters, bluegills only spawn one time in the spring/early summer period. Most northern states have but one spawn while warmer, southern climates have multiple spawns per year that get underway once waters reach 70 degrees. After that initial spawn the lunar phase kicks in and bedding activity can occur during full moon phases almost as active as the initial spawn, whether it is May, June or whenever. And this can vary from one year to the next and from one water to another. Appreciate your insight.

  • Noticed 2 different reels. Just a small chance you could be a brilliant bullshiter.

    • Indeed, I have several ultralight combos and usually keep two with me on any given trip in case something happens. And I may have gathered this footage from two different trips either side of the full moon, same water. I based my research on thousands of hours of fishing and observation over a 66-year period, not on some Google Graduate degree. I would encourage you to read some of my many published articles on bluegill and crappie fishing in the In Fisherman, Fish and Game, Baltimore Sun, or check out my Face Book page. I only average around 2000 bluegills a year and have been a passionate angler/outdoor writer for all things sunfish throughout my lifetime. Not just I, but many fishery biologists have confirmed, along with thousands of savvy, seasoned panfish anglers, nationwide, that many environments see an upswing in spawning activity bracketing the full moon phases. In regard to your demeaning, jealous-fueled comment, I would be more than delighted to take you fishing, to some of my favorite spots in and around full moon phases during the spring and summer. As I clearly pointed out....some waters hold true to the "moon phase bite" and increased bedding activity and others do not, seeing only a "once-a-year" spawn...primarily in northern tier states of the US. Please let me know if you would like any more information on bluegills, sunfish or hybrids thereof and catching them. It is my goal for all who view these videos to be successful anglers and catch quality bluegills and have fun. Have a good day, my friend!
