  • Here's when it was -40: 32:58 And an example of the ice flooding after drilling a hole: kzhead.info/sun/qdGwe7eFapOvm6M/bejne.html Get a lot of questions and some are quick to accuse me of lying about the temperature (no, I never have). Temps are regularly in the -30s here and I camp year-round...it's not a green screen, it's a wood stove. If the title says -30, that's the LOW for the trip...the temp fluctuates, of course. I made a video for the top 11 FAQs I get about winter camping: 1) If it's so cold, why can't you see your breath? kzhead.info/sun/lMOnoquNq5dul4U/bejne.html 2) If it's so cold, why is there slush on the lake? kzhead.info/sun/lMOnoquNq5dul4U/bejne.html 3) Why aren't you melting snow for water? kzhead.info/sun/lMOnoquNq5dul4U/bejne.html 4) What is the temp inside the tent? kzhead.info/sun/lMOnoquNq5dul4U/bejne.html 5) Why winter camp at all? kzhead.info/sun/lMOnoquNq5dul4U/bejne.html 6) Why aren't you wearing snowshoes? kzhead.info/sun/lMOnoquNq5dul4U/bejne.html 7) How do you poop when it's that cold? kzhead.info/sun/lMOnoquNq5dul4U/bejne.html 8) Aren't you worried about carbon monoxide from the stove? kzhead.info/sun/lMOnoquNq5dul4U/bejne.html 9) Aren't you afraid of animals attacking you? Where's your gun? kzhead.info/sun/lMOnoquNq5dul4U/bejne.html8 10) How you you power your devices? kzhead.info/sun/lMOnoquNq5dul4U/bejne.html 11) Why don't you use a floor? kzhead.info/sun/lMOnoquNq5dul4U/bejne.html Hope it helps clear some things up.

I randomly came across your channel while i was searching for soothing stuff on YT to calm my spontaneous severe IBS flare ups, and for some unknow reason, your videos make me feel so much better. Your cinematic abilities, the way you talk, do things is so soothing and calming and stoic at the same time, it's contagious, as someone said " Calm is contagious " . • Good trip. Those holes in the snow you found on your walk around the lake are overnight ruffed grouse roosts/beds. They bury themselves in soft snow for its insulating properties. They usually defecate before leaving their beds. That's what you found. The impressions in the snow near the holes are made by their wings at take off.

I was in a very difficult place in my life at the time. I think the most difficult in my life. Watching you exploring the wilderness in the way you do is inspiring. You approach it with such humility, and respect while showing good humour and positivity in the face of the nastiest bugs, weather, and portages the North has to offer. It gave me hope in a hopeless time in my life. It got me out there; into the wilderness again! Following in your footsteps sometimes. Sometimes finding my own way. Thank you Jon. Thank you so much. Now I am starting to post my own videos. Learning along the way. Loving it!! I still watch everything you post. I love watching you and Erin too. You're a great pair!! Thanks again! Cheers!

  • The still image at 6:42 is so beautiful, homey and calm. Speaking of what smells more appetising than cooking onions, id say garlic frying is a close second. Your video is a combination of some of the most pleasing things, like staying warm and cosy indoors while watching out a window where outside is raining or snowing, the cracking of wood in a campfire, the sound of hot water pouring into cocoa powder… it feels so reassuring. It’s very kind and considerate of u to handle the fish captured so gently l, and ensure it stayed in the water instead of lifting it up. ❤

You need plenty of trust in your gear and ability to do this sort of thing. It's crazy to think of how the native Americans, Innuits and other northern peoples survived this stuff.

Living like this is about connection to nature. Life in conditions like this is very good for humans, as it drives progress immensely and promotes friendly, cooperative living.

  • Hey Jon, another great video my friend, it's nice that you had some fish action in the tent. Those holes you saw in the snow are most likely from Grouse that come off their roost and burrow under the snow in real cold weather. The temps you had would do it for sure. I have seen this many times over the years. I even had them bust out of the snow when I walked past them, that will get the heart started . lol Another great video, take care and stay safe Brother. • I camped in the boundary water in -40 x-country ski 7 miles to the lake. Didn't use a tent or a heater. When I woke up the next day the thermometer needle was buried at -45f. I just dug a little cave in a snow drift. I tried fishing but the hole would freeze over instantly. I'm not sure I'd want to do it again.

  • John I wanted to thank you [and that pretender Xander, yes, you are like a dad to him] for your videos. I share your joy of nature, be it a greT moose or bear or a tiny flower, insect or interesting fungi. You do a great job of sharing your experience in a thoughtful, inclusive way. You also set a great example for others to follow of how we should 'take only memories and leave behind only footprints'. Keep them coming please.

    • Also, what does the temperature stay at inside the tent in those temps?

      @bryceborgialli5090@bryceborgialli5090 Жыл бұрын
    • Thanks Bryce! The inside temp ranges widely depending on how I use the dampers (on the door and flue) but it's doable to get it to 40C when it's -30C outside. But if it's -30 overnight and I'm trying to maximize the burn duration, I'll close the dampers most of the way to slow the burn. It's also much colder on the ground than in the top half of the tent, so it could easily be below freezing still in that scenario which is why I still need a good sleep system (I only run the stove all night at -20C or colder). Generally if I'm awake the indoor temp is probably 10-12C and if sleeping a bit below freezing

It's all a ruse to cause heart failure in unsuspecting snowshoers or skiers, so they can roost under a warm body for the evening.
