The City of Johannesburg (COJ) is building an informal settlement for displaced residents. With a 500 000 housing backlog, the city has repeatedly failed to deliver on its housing projects, leaving thousands of residents without adequate homes. Last year, when 77 people died in a massive blaze at the Usindiso building downtown, the city’s skewed priorities and lack of preparedness were exposed. Every municipality is required to provide temporary shelters for residents caught in a major disaster - but the COJ hadn’t made any arrangements. So, it built 300 one-room, paper-thin tin shacks at an eye-watering R4.2 million. But should shacks cost ratepayers millions of rands? Carte Blanche investigates.

Might be worth taking a look at Vienna social housing when talking about the topic of handling lower and middle income housing. The city owns most of the land, builds it all up, and rent is pretty low.

Heres the logic. The person in charge of building those shacks probably charged them R200k per unit
As soon as any building is renovated for people to live in, you'll have various groups demanding that they are given that accommodation for free, or they'll just hijack the building before any else is allowed to move in.

I have been looking for one for the passed 2years to use for business and the cheapest quote I got for a normal container is R20 000. So please refer me where I can buy that 7k container without being scammed. Thank you

To promote the family unit and parenting. To Educate people to understand basic numeracy and financial literacy. Hold thieving politicians to scrutiny and account for taking what should go to the people. Educate people so they grasp what things really cost the taxpaying populace. To stop telling people to expect free things. Nothing is Free! Everyone who is able should contribute something! Like keeping ones environment clean, keeping an eye out for another, being responsible for oneself instead of making welfare an ideal.

I worked on a project in 2017 where we earmarked state-owned buildings in the inner city that would be used for affordable rental, gentrification and emergency relief but here we ae 7 years later and still nothing has been done

I beg to disagree! As young people, *you have the power to effect immediate change and demand accountability* by taking to the streets on sustained monthly (at the very least), respectfully orchestrated protests. It is so disappointing to see our young people sitting back, waiting for the change to come. It's never going to happen. Worse, is the young people who celebrate the thieves in government as they flaunt their ill gotten gains - the bling brigades! As a Black person myself, who struggled to raise funding through government programmes to start my own business simply because I am not politically connected, then securing the investment privately (yes, from white people!), and then making a success of my business, but needing to take painstaking measures to live as simply as possible because others unjustly assume that I am where I am because of BEE or political connections, it's doubly infuriating. I don't want to be associated with that bunch but because of the colour of my skin, I am. If young people were/are actively working to change the exploitation of the poorest of the poor, we wouldn't be having the problems we have. I speak to my staff repeatedly, they agree but just don't have the incentive to work to bring about the change we need. I can assure you, that investors are eager to invest in SA, but they cannot do so with the criminals running the country (Please don't get me wrong, I am against the DA and it's pro-West stance. Many Europeans I know are themselves sick of living under the yoke of the US with their weak complaisant governments!). Our problems are not insurmountable, but again, it's you young people that must drive the change!

The reason why government cannot convert existing inner city buildings into habitable living spaces is the amount of bureaucracy building policies and regulations they have to deal with to get planning approval to convert these buildings. The money is there, the empty buildings are there but the planning approvals are not. It’s easier to build a shack because there’s no planning or building rules to deal with.
This is embarrassing 😮. A municipality should never resort to housing people in a formal settlement

Nkosinathi doesn't know the price of a 1 room shack. A 1room shack is sold at R3000-3500. 1 and half room is sold at R3500-R4000. 2room is sold at R4000-R4500.
