  • I have enjoyed Calexico live several times in Berlin. In Munich I met the producer of their very first album Spoke. It was interesting to hear from him about the beginning of the band. I have got most of their albums on CD (except Spoke which I have got on vinyl), and I think that Feast Of Wire is also my favourite one. I have also got the DVD World Drifts In, which I find very enjoyable. My former neighbor was the long-time concert agent for Calexico. It's a small world after all.

  • Wow, quite an honor to bestow on Calexico. A band I believe has now faded from the regular press cycle and attention of the online media. Though they've always put out quality. I definitely loved this album back then, and still have the CD, but I have to confess haven't heard it in some time. Always interesting that they were lumped in with indie rock bands but were certainly a different beast. Much like Tortoise was as well. Cheers Mazzy

  • hi, love this band and John Convertino has been my favorite drummer since I first saw him in the '90's. Quick correction, John and Joey were in Howe Gelb's "Giant Sand" (not big sand) before going out on their own with Calexico. They also contributed heavily to some great albums by Richard Buckner and Neko Case. Really appreciate you championing them!

  • One of the nice things about these VC videos is the reminders to revisit the music in our collections. I bought the CD of Feast of Wire based on the strong reviews from Mojo, Uncut and others and loved it. I’ll stick with the great sounding CD for now although I did recently pick up a discounted 180gm version of Lambchop’s Nixon through Newbury Comics. Another great album. Thanks Mazzy

Hope you have the limited edition "Spirotoso" album they did with a German orchestra about 10 years back. Some excellent stuff on that one (with some excellent alternative arrangements).

Btw… I like the way you wondered if ‘historical history’ was redundant… tbh, I’d start with ‘I’m not wearing a hat, right now’😂 Cheers, Mazzy… I’m enjoying an omnibus catch up of your videos from the past couple of weeks.

Also, check some sleeper releases from them like 'Aerocalexico' and 'Travelall'. Superb musicianship.

It's not my favourite Calexico album, that's The Black Light from 1998, but it's certainly up there. I did a Calexico video years ago. Perhaps it's time to do a ranking video? I've not done one of those before. I've got that DVD of the Barbican concert too. You're right, it's pretty great. I haven't picked up the anniversary edition of Feast of Wire, I've already got the original issue, but I might try to get it later in the year when I'm less fiscally challenged. Hed

  • Brilliant record, but jeebuz it's not the best. How can you choose the best? I saw them on this tour in Australia & that's what turned me onto them, but again how can you say it's the best US album? There are so many incredible records released in the last 20 years just in America! It's like choosing the greatest album of all time. I personally can't do it, so good on you for having a crack. British hey....Thom York's voice always sounds like he's crying to me, but musically Radiohead are great. I have to be in the right mood to listen to them. What about an Australian record Mazz-dawg? It's like we don't exist in the northern hemisphere. Ghosteen kicks the arse of both records you mentioned...so does Push The Sky & Skeleton Tree by the way. Just one man's opinion. Cheers...Ben

  • Erm... interesting choice Sir, for me it's impossible to choose 1 album, but there two which are fairly recent releases, one 2019 and the other 2020, so in no particular order Dylan released a mammoth single in 2019, it came out of nowhere and blew the music industry upside down, then in 2020 as Covid hit he released his 39th Album RARW's, one pondered if the Man himself had predicted the coming of the Virus and offered up these absolutely fantastic gems for us to dive into, RARW's is a masterpiece, I wish people would take time and engage in Dylan's work, he is unique Next us is a 2019 release from an artist whom I was drawn to because of the savage attacks from critics, there were two things here, the absolute misogyny and unjustified hate levelled at this artist appalled me, but the truth is Lana del Ray showed her credentials on her first Album, critics had to backtrack eventually, but they showed misogyny is alive and as toxic as ever, Norman Fucken Rockwell is a humdinger, it is certainly a masterpiece, its vision and scope sublime, thanks as always Sir, love that hate btw

  • Calexico is a cool band and a good choice. Prolific band also. Probably the lone wolf a bit on this but my pick is still Father John Misty's "I Love You, Honeybear" Why? Because I think its the before Blood On The Tracks of this century. Before the breakdown and breakup. Very personal album of Josh Tillmans that basically explores relationships in a 21st century way with lyrics such as... "I wanna take you in the kitchen Lift up your wedding dress, someone was probably murdered in" ...from Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins) The album plays the trick of harkening back to aristocracy, yet brings in elements of privileges and mindset of the american male of this century. Josh is able to humorously depict the trials of finding the "one" and at the same time out his own BS. Mixing in dreamy arrangements that are both epic and feel heartbroken all at once. Mordant and plaintive at the same time. The album imo expresses the floatiness of love at the same time one is being pulled down, perfectly. How frustrating it is to court someone through text messages. The be easy on me Im new at this awkwardness of the honeymoon. All about relationships that somehow encapsulates the feel of the times we live in. The album takes us on a journey through the singer meeting his wife in a store until their deaths and in between is the humor of what happens in a relationship such all the aggressive women he met along with understanding his idealistic existence. In one song, "Nothing Good Ever Happens at the Goddamn Thirsty Crow" the subject matter splits to one part up and downs of dating to a situation in which his wife is harrassed by some men. Check the album out if one can relate to the material. The next would be Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Wilco is probably all in all my favorite band of the early 00's. And this is their masterpiece of styles and uniqueness. Kid A is a very good contender, I agree. My dad wore that type hat you are showing. Alot of men from that era wore them along with Dickie pants and buttondown shirts. Howard Hughes had alot to do with oilfield men wearing those Strat'liners. As you mention, they were modeled off the look of a plane. Airliners were a thing then as they were brand new to the public. Alot of styles were modeled after aviation, right? Right. Almost every old pic with my dad in it has him in that hat, along with the men he worked with wearing one also. Same color as the one you have now Mr Mazzy. They weren't really even considered fancy, they just were the fashion of the day for working men. Like basball caps are today. Only with class. I have a Resistol Kingsman and black Stetson Corral. The first straw (it gets hot here in the summer :)) and the second felt. I call the black one Jack, named after the bad guy Jack Palance. I won the straw one, rather expensive hat, in a singing contest. I came in second:(. Only in Texas do they give a person a cowboy hat for a prize in a singing contest. I dont wear them as much anymore. Cowboy hats use to be much more common here. Not so much now. Caps are the hats of our times, unfortunately. Thanks for the video!
