  • What the article doesn't mention is that it will only use 100 workers to produce 30,000 cars per year which is almost unheard-of. That's how automated the factory is... Meanwhile Tesla needs 10,000,000 sq ft to produce 250,000/year at Gigafactory Texas and has 12,000+ people to do so... Even with automation.... Personally I think smaller and more efficient in the way to go..

  • Things like putting the body components together and spray painting still get done in Korea and get shipped over to Singapore to do the backend part?

    • No, it just means more margins for them to cover the cost of factory over here

  • It's interesting to see the auto sector split into two camps. One being the "bigger is better" Tesla types that are outracing each other to build larger and larger factories. Then there are companies like Hyundai which are going back to the Future with smaller regional auto assembly factories about the size of a regional mall that can tailor vehicles and demand to local market conditions... Think of it as the revival of the old "knock down car kit" factories of old where vehicles were shipped flat-pack style with local labor doing all the assembly... Here in Canada, even Volvo had a factory in Darmouth/Halifax with a capacity of, 12,000 cars per year...

  • Having minimum or higher wages in some sectors may even encourage Singaporeans to reclaim jobs that have in the past decade gone to foreigners. We know of Singaporean friends of ours, who are happy to work in the service industry while schooling overseas as there is a minimum salary of about $12 per hour (after tax). These Singaporeans will not consider taking on the job in Singapore because the pay is too low.

    • World most expensive country to buy a car but taxi & ride hailing ride fare are way very low comparing to other major economies. Have anyone ever thought about it, driver daily overhead such as rental/lease, petrol, carpark and many more.... everything are getting expensive but fare most of the time are still pathetic. For driver, more daily trips plus longer working hours. How to have work life balance like that? Western tourist also wonder and ask driver how they earn with low ride fares in Singapore.

  • Also don't forget singapore had changed to a multi-nation country (multi-nation-singapore)so even with the saf soldiers also no use, it's the pap party mistakes and there's no way to u-turn back.

    • Ioniq 6 Vs Ioniq 5 is not like iPhone 5 v iPhone 6. Ioniq 5 is a crossover whilst Ioniq 6 is sedan so it's not that they are making an old model here plus Sg market loves crossovers

  • So what? Can the population buy the cars without COE? Otherwise it has insignificant. Wait till Msia come up with EV production and she will crush this tiny plant.
