Every year from November to April numerous city crews join their effort during the winter season to remove snow and clear the roadways after snow falls. In Montreal, an artillery of tools and heavy machinery is used in the streets of the metropolitan city of 3 million people. Montreal being a city in Southern Quebec, Canada encounters less snow than its counterparts up north but is nonetheless required to develop incredible snow removal techniques featured in this video. This two hour video compilation includes raw footage of two major snow dumping locations in Lasalle and in St-Leonard, both located on the island of Montreal. Other locations were filmed on the South Shore and in the West Island. It also includes footage of specialized equipment among others front-end loaders mounted with snow blowing engines and snow grading blades. All footage was filmed in 4K UHD and is available for licensing without a logo.

As an Australian I never ever thought that snow would be something that was an issue in cities , I learned there is special machines to remove it, trucks transport it and theres huge facilities for dumping it, Totally amazed mate amazing
Hahaha, yes it is a very serious issue in northern North America. If it snows more than 10 inches here in Detroit, my car cannot make it out of the driveway so we rely on people like the ones in this video to allow us to function. Although the snow removal in the Detroit Metro area isn't even as close to as efficient as this video shows in Canada, I definately commend their service. They work nights and weekends as well as all holidays. Commendable service! In fact this year, 2020, it snowed on Christmas and I still saw loads of plow trucks on the road away from their families...

Yea NA winter is pretty wicked. I'm actually in Montreal. Our winters are dog shit lol. Over the past few years we've gotten less and less snow with global warming and shit, but we used to get FEET of snow every few days. AWD cars are almost a necessity here in winter lol. Oh and snow tires.

That's what it takes to keep roads passable. Much better equipped than some states here in the U.S. They know what to do and have developed a system that works for them,

@@ml.2770 Lol, I forgot about that, but you are probably right, in upstate NY, the equipment for snow removal was bought thru a company owned by the cousin of the city Mayor, it was said the city paid 3 times what the equipment really went for, also you had a lot of no show jobs for his relatives
For those that don't know, once the cold weather hits, the exhaust of the trucks is rerouted thru the bottom of the dump box to prevent sticking when dumping. A little hard to see here but close up you'll see the exhaust exit the rear upper corner of the box instead of the stacks. This applies to those trucks that are so equipped only.
Really wish my truck had that option. Much easier than having to spray every so often

Ahhhh I love living in Canada. There is something comforting about seeing everything blanketed in beautiful white snow. So many people hate it but I for one love winter in Canada.

No one does it better than Montreal. Great system. Great equipment and staff. And I can't believe I just spent 2 hours watching this but I just couldn't stop the video. So interesting and great quality video. I live in a small Ontario town with 1 JD Loader with Larue snowblower, 11 snowplows and 3 sidewalk plows. I happen to work for the city and I often do traffic control for snow removal operations. Those are my favorite days to work.
For those who may have wondered, it wasn't until 1927 that the first snowblower (invented by Arthur Sicard) appeared on the streets of Outremont--now a district of Montreal. Up until then, snow clearing from the streets was handled by teams of otherwise-unemployed men using shovels along with horse-drawn plows. Later, as more mechanized equipment began to be purchased by the city, these men--fearful of losing their annual winter work--actually threatened to go on strike and some actually did.

Impressive snow removal operation!! Montreal doesn't shut down for snow. They don't play around, they get rid of the stuff. I will never forget the first time I visited Montreal, in winter, with snow, and got to see first-hand their efficient snow-removal operation.

I am very fortunate that my Canadian city is about as far South you can go to Canada, and our snow issues are nothing like what Eastern Canada gets. 2 average snowfalls per year. But if we had more, I wish we had a system like Montreal.

What's your point? Then UK rarely gets snow that settles for more than a few hours. Consequently it's not worth investing billions in snow clearing equipment that would sit idle for years at a time. The minor inconvenience of a day or twos disruption once every few years is surely better than wasting a fortune?

It's not about spending billions on equipment, we've already got plenty of gritting machines fitted with snow ploughs.... It's about managing the equipment and resources better. Here in Mississippi it doesn't even have to stick and businesses close schools shut down people crashing everywhere, it's almost as bad as the video of 27 UK (I may be incorrect about it being the UK somewhere where not all of them have guns and we know tasers don't always work) police for one man with a knife....

As a guy from Toronto/GTA, I'm envious of the Montreal way of snow removal. I don't know why we don't have that here. Then again, lately we haven't gotten that much snow, so perhaps for them the expense isn't worth it. Thanks for the neat footage.
at least in Montreal they remove the snow. In Edmonton they just expect us to drive on it till it packs to hard ice with a few crumbs of gravel in it. Good thing we only have 7 months of winter.

We had a pile here in my western city in 2011...The pile finally melted about August 20th. and we had MANY + 30C days that summer. But that is super rare. Lost piles are gone in early June or sooner.
Thank you for the video, I had no clue any of this even existed on this scale. Pretty neat how not only do they dump it in an old quarry they also make a large pile of it. I guess something like that would not melt completely if you have a cooler than normal summer.
I grew up here and it does indeed not melt until well into the summer. We take it for granted here but I thought it would be cool to show to the rest of the world!
Incidentally, those snow mounds left in the abandoned quarries take a very long time to melt. I have seen significant piles of still there well into the summer!

The amount of infrastructure needed to keep this process going year after year is just insane. Here in the PNW, we get maybe 6" to a foot of snow and the whole area shuts down for a few days until its gone.

Buffalo is very experienced at snow removal. Their problem is they get lake effect storms that dump massive amounts of snow. You can't plow it, it has to be picked up and dumped in the river. My guess is they don't have much equipment for that kind of removal. Most cities simply plow it. Montreal uses an old gravel pit to dump the snow into instead of dumping it in the river (which would likely be bad for the water quality due to all the salt).

When I was a boy growing up in Park Extension they used to dump the snow onto a huge vacant lot where there was a factory that burnt down, in spring time when it was melting we would go by after school and search for money coming out of the melting snow. Found more then you would think. :D

Yeah, I've heard that homeless guys also do that as the snow melts in the snowdump sites.
You can make some good money if you find the right dump site. We haul snow out of a parking ramp frequented by bar and night club crowds. Needless to say drunk people lose shit. I’ve found 5 phones, three sets of car keys and around $50 in the past two weeks. Only half the snow has melted from our dump site so I figure to make a bit more before it’s all said and done. Beware because you also find a bunch of other shit you don’t want. Underwear, condoms and needles are not rare finds unfortunately.

Routine in Montreal, every year.
Some winters we don't get too much snow. Other winters we need this kind of snow removal on a weekly basis for 2-3 months. One time, it snowed so much for so long that by day 3, my car was no longer visible, at all. It took me hours to dig the car out and carve a path for it to leave. I love it anyway. Winter is like a reset button that purges all the bugs.

I live in a city in the Southern Hemisphere where it doesn’t snow. Never in my 31 years of life had I considered the necessity for an operation such as this.
In the interior city there is no room to dump snow. In our suburban Montreal city and the single family home parts of Montreal they blow the plowed snowbanks over the sidewalk and onto our front lawns.
@@rongoesCDN Montreal's snow-filled trucks used to dump it in the St. Lawrence River from strategically-located ramps, but due to the existence of street salt accumulated in the snow and its potential to pollute the river, that practice was terminated some years ago. In addition to the abandoned quarries, there are also deep snow shafts located in certain districts; shafts that end in storm drains. Presumably, in this manner, there is less salt to cause any pollution issues, but one never knows for sure.
Montreal is a fantastic city.

To put it that way, it's just more profitable to remove the snow then it is to leave it there. The profit loss for businesses would mount very quickly if we did not remove the snow. We can get easily a full 2 meter of snow each year. The city would grind to a halt.

Would be interesting to excavate the pile one day. Leave it to melt a few years and a nice crust of debris would be left (likely mostly asphalt)
I find all my lost tools and bolts in spring after my plow piles melt on the side of my driveway. Just got a blower tractor im restoring, so next year ill probably end up throwing the tools into the yard and then hit them with the mowing deck in the spring and launch them into my truck, and drop back on to the driveway.

This is the old Francon quarry in Montreal. The snow usually melts by mid-summer. Years ago, they used to dump the salty, dirty street snow off the downstream end of the island, this is a much more environmentally-friendly solution!

You just heard on tv when the mayor had to order a bypass dumping sewers in the river..lasted one night..to fix major pipes....did you know that victoria bc still does not have a filtering station??they dump the sewers in the river every days!! Did you not hear about the big flush in new york??montreal is a clean city if you compare!!

@@the4kguy I watched this hoping to see some equipment I saw there in the early 2000's. Somewhere in Montreal there was a city dump that had large excavators equipped with huge spinning steel paddle wheels where the buckets mount. The wheels would spin fast and throw the snow 50-80 feet up in the air on to the pile. Incredibly dangerous to be anywhere near but super cool to watch. If you can ask some of the city guys if they still use that equipment and if so at what dump. It would be a worthwhile ADD to this awesome video. You covered pretty much all of it except those machines if they are still using them. Great work!
@@mxracer700 : I think the correct term is loaders. In areas where they have room they blow it on front lawns. Downtown and areas with limited space they blow into dump trucks and haul it to a snow dump, melter into the sanitary sewer or the off island quarry depicted (The Miron one is closed and filled with garbage and tunnel spoil and excavation material..
Amazing how far up that equipment can throw snow.

Quite a few years ago, they had a 20cm dump of snow in Toronto and Mel Lasmen had to call in the Canadian Army! In Montreal, even 50 or 60cm dont slow them down!

On November 12, 1968, Montreal had a huge blizzard and the snow clearing was not contracted to start until the 15th of the month. It was not pretty. Took me 3 hours to get home in what was usually a 30 minute commute! The power went out for hours that evening so dinner was also ruined! Drifts were up to 15 feet high on Nun’s Island the next morning! Interesting article. Thanks.
